Do I have to start the conversation from 3jam in order for replies to go to my 3jam inbox?
In order for reply texts to go to my 3jam inbox, I have to start the conversation from 3jam, right? for example, if I am logged into 3jam, and a friend starts a conversation by texting my phone it will only go to my phone, not into my 3jam inbox, correct?

No you do not have to start a conversation to have messages go to your Inbox. Conversations will automatically be started for you if you have never received a message from a new sending party.
Are you not receiving messages in your Inbox? If so, one reason could be that your text message preference for your virtual number is "Do nothing", where messages will not be forwarded to you.
If you would like messages to be delivered to you, please set the preference accordingly.
If you are still unable to receive messages in your Inbox, please send a support request to support AT 3jam.com (replace AT with @) with your virtual number and the phone number that is sending the mesage, and we'll be happy to help figure out what is going on.

Inappropriate?I don't have a virtual number, I'm only using my actual cell phone handset. what I noticed is that if I start a convo from 3jam, messages will be sent to the inbox, but when I tested it by sending myself a text message using one of those free sites online i went only to the phone, even though I was logged onto 3jam.

If you don't have a 3jam virtual number, users won't be able to send you messages unless you initiate a conversation with them from 3jam.
If you purchase a 3jam virtual number, anyone sending a text message to this number will be placed into a conversation with you, including the web Inbox.
What number were you sending the text message to and which site were you using?

Inappropriate?I was using this site http://www.txt2day.com/ and sending it to my cell number, since I don't have a virtual number.
so in order for conversations initiated by my friends to appear on 3jam I need to get a virtual number? I wish there was a way to do it with my current cell number so that I don't have to give all my friends a new number to reach me at :) (like if 3jam had a deal with my cell company, or something like that)

Can I port my cell number to 3Jam, I thought you could only port landline numbers? If I can port my cell number, than the issue of giving friends a new number does not exist -

Inappropriate?I do have one more question - A techcrunch article from a while ago says that the text messages sent appear to recipients as if they are from your regular cell number number (http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/06/18/...) but my friend who i've been testing 3jam with, says that when she gets a text from me its a different number, and she only knew it was me since it said that the reply goes to me.

Yes, you can port your wireless number to 3jam.
Correct - if you have a virtual number, then messages will appear to come from this number. If you don't, then messages will come from a random number, which is what your friend is seeing.
