Add a NFC chip to the iPhone so I can pay for items using the Visa PayWave/MasterCard PayPass system.
Apple could add a NFC (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_Field_Communication) chip to the iPhone so that you would be able to pay for things using your phone. Items under £10 would just require you to wave your iPhone over the reader, and for more expensive items, you just enter a PIN number on your iPhone to authorize the payment.
You can already do this with a plastic card with that Visa PayWave (visapaywave.co.uk) and MasterCard PayPass (www.mastercard.com/uk/personal/en/pay...) systems.
The iPhone has already done away with one device I no longer need to carry around with me (iPod), so how about getting rid of the wallet too?

Inappropriate? This is potentially huge. The mere fact that Apple supports it would create a whole new way of paying in the U.S., too.
I’m excited

Inappropriate? There is an NFC add-on solution that works on GSM handsets including iPhone. The NFC add-on is inserted in the SIM slot and does not affect the telco SIM at all.
Here is a link to an article about it.

There will be other NFC add-ons for iPhone soon.

Looks like an interesting development!
So is this something I can go out and buy myself, or do I have to wait for my bank / mobile operator to offer it to me? -
Inappropriate? For payment card applications like Visa payWave and MC PayPass, issuers have to be involved because the card data contains secure information.
One of the beauties of using an NFC add-on, besides being able to keep using your own phone, is it supports different distribution models. It does not necessarily have to be a bank or mobile operator who distributes the add-ons, it could be a merchant (online or brick-and-mortar), or whatever you can think of.
