How do I search my iPhone? Or do I?
This must be in the works. Any workaround for now (to search across appointments, contacts, emails)?

You don't as far as I can tell, although there are some navigational links that you can use to jump between silos of data.
For example, clicking on a name in an email will take you to the contact listing, and clicking an address in a contact will take you to maps.
You can't ask it "Give me every item that has 'John Appleseed' mentioned in it". You'll also notice that there is no concept of a generic file in the system either. All data is contained and exclusively accessed through its application.

Inappropriate? The calendar doesn't interface at all with the contacts db. The email app does though. I would think there is a way to jump from a contact to all of their associated email. It's not search so much as indexing by recipient.
A general text search for email would be handy, though. I use the search in gmail virtually every hour, partially because for most things it's so fast and good it is more efficient than any organizational scheme I might think of.

Inappropriate? There is a search app that you can find in Installer.app, but to do this you must hack your phone. I suggest using ziphone (warning, auto playing youtube video because this got featured on italian TV).

Thanks for the help. I got the itunes app for searching contacts, but cannot search the calendar by date ("go to"). My real problem is being able to search the calendar by event like the Palm program does. I really miss that feature. If there is any news on that front, I would appreciate hearing about it.
