iPhones that aren't AT&T?
Will iPhones ever be available to carriers other than AT&T? I like the iPhone, but I don't want to switch carriers just because I like a phone. Add that I don't want to start messing around with unlocked phones because of software updates screwing up the phone.

Inappropriate?Yes, you undoubtedly will be able to use the iPhone with other carrierts, but not until Apple and AT&T's exclusive contract is finished, and that won't be for awhile. Years.
I had your same problem, but I sucked it up and did it. I had to pay Verizon an early termination fee even. That hurt, but I'm happy now. I rely extensively on my iPhone. I love it. I'll be buying the new one when it comes out. I can't wait.
