Gantt Charts
How about a Gantt Chart view of the project plan? It may not be editable, but a view would also be good enough.

We rolled out the first version of Gantt Charts for PlannerX yesterday! Once you login to PlannerX, you can click on the Gantt Chart icon (second icon at top) and see your plan in Gantt view. Clicking on Outline icon brings back to original plan editing screen.
We had to take many assumptions while building the chart since Basecamp provides due dates only on milestones. There are no other dates / estimates / completion % available.
Here's what we are doing to show the Gantt Chart:
- A milestone's due date becomes next milestone's start date
- To-do lists within a milestone are assumed to take equal time. So if a milestone was 10 days long, with 2 todo-lists, each would get 5 days.
- To-do items are given entire duration of todo-list.
- Items marked as completed, will show up in green, with 100% mark.
- All other items will be normal, 0% completed. (I know this is bad, but this is a limitation we have because of Basecamp!)
- Relationships and hierarchies are maintained
- If we can't figure out start date for a milestone, we use the date on which it was created.
- If we can't figure out start / end dates for an item despite everything, we just copy them from item above it!
Despite all these limitations, we have a sweet & sleek Gantt chart in place. I think it's better than any other Gantt chart implementations out there on Basecamp!
Look forward to your feedback!

Inappropriate?Great with a Gantt Chart, but we could really use a Gantt Chart that shows all the projects at once.
We are working on 20 projects or more weekly, so it could be nice to see which projects we are working on today, tommorow, ect.
Basecamp has it ́s milestones calender on the Dashboard, if you could show that as a Gantt Chart, it would be perfekt. Then we will buy your PlannerX for sure.

That's a good point. The only complication is the amount of detail to show on the chart. Would just showing milestones on the Gantt chart be sufficient - for all projects together? Or you would also want todo-lists and items also to show up? My concern is that too many items will make it very difficult to view and comprehend.
:Nirav -
Thanks for your reply.
It would be sufficient with milestones for all the projects, if it shows the full duration of the projects and where there are overlaps between projects.
Then you can see more details on tasks on each project.

Inappropriate? This is great and provides a solution to people who do actually like gantt charts. I think it is very useful to be able to see a gantt chart of all projects since it helps a lot with project planning, seeing where there is overlap between different projects.
For the timings, we have started to use a 'hack' using negative time to estimate hours for each task, rather than using this function to log time spent. This could be integrated into the list view interface to estimate time (it could maybe use days = 8 hours) and then use this data for plotting tasks on the gantt chart.

Thanks for your ideas Greg!
I do see the value of multiple projects in the Gantt chart. We will consider it in a future upgrade. Would like to get feedback from other users too about it!
And hey, your hack of using negative time entries is really smart! Really clever thinking! What do others think of it?
We have a similar product in the making for activeCollab and we will be taking 8 hours per day, 5 days a week kind of calculations for estimations. So yes, that makes sense too!
Look forward to hear from others! -
Inappropriate?Just backing up Greg's comments, as soon as you have gantt for activeCollab displaying mutliple projects with drill down into the specfic projects i'm buying.
nice work.

For the activeCollab version, we have a view only Gantt chart for one project for now. We plan to have multiple projects on Gantt chart, individual items can be collapsed / expanded within Gantt chart.
Could you tell us more about the drill down you mentioned? -
Inappropriate?Well I’ve just watched your plannerX and love the keyboard shortcut and expand/collapse functionally .
So without thinking too heavily on the requirements I’d like to see:
1. a single rolled up view of each project showing the overall duration.
2. Clicking on a project would display the milestones
3. expanding the milestones would display tickets or any other core elements with tasks and dates, Checklist, Pages.
4. Clicking on a ticket would show the sub tasks
5. There should be a small icon or link to open each item directly.
5. Being able to edit each of the items inline is nice
I'm sure there would be plenty more as I think it through.
Would this be an installable module? -
Thanks! The Gantt component we are using would allow to expand and collapse items. So rather than drilling down by clicking, it could be by collapsing.
We don't include Pages and Checklists in the project plan yet.
And yes, you will be able to install Planning module on your own server.
Thanks for your ideas :-) -
Sounds good. We would also be interested in this great feature for ActiveCollab. -
Inappropriate?I'll second interest in the items that wallacea listed.

Inappropriate?Gantt Charts for activeCollab would be a fantastic addition to a great online toolset. *Please* keep us posted on progress!

Yes! We have a basic Gantt chart available in Planning module beta! We will be adding multiproject support in the next versions. -
Inappropriate? The gantt feature is not working. when i click on it nothing happens. tried logging in and out a number of times.
-
Hi Greg,
Does your plan contain html specific characters? Like >, < and &? We have a known issue with them.
If not, could you give us some more details? Does the outline load correctly? Do you see any error on Gantt view?
:Nirav -
Inappropriate?I guess a "read only" gant chart is an excelent way to visualize all our projects and also the gratest tool for manage them.
Try to get a editable gantt is just more than enough for the most popular companies, so we can edit activecollab taskes, tickets and milestones.
Regards, and please keep us posted!

It's a live demo of our upcoming Planning module - with Gantt Chart / Timeline view included. -
Inappropriate?that demo looks amazing. my team can't wait to get hold of this module to help us with planning of projects. keep up the good work!!!!
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?I'm with Cameron on that! One of our team tried viewing it on a MAC using Firefox and the gantt window didn't auto expand so perhaps something to check. Browsercam is useful for that.
I’m excited
-
Thank you for your encouragement! That gives us even more energy to complete all pending work before we release!
@Adam: Can you give more details about auto expand not working? I am on Mac, Firefox and it worked well. Do you mean expanding the plan or adjusting zoom of the timeline to fit the whole plan in one view? -
Inappropriate? On my machine the module expanded to fill the size of the aC skin. However on her mac the interface only filled 1/4 of the grey flash window and she could not get the app to expand and was left trying the demo in with a very small viewing window. On Monday i'll ask her to post a screenshot.
-
Inappropriate?Hi, I'm the one who was having the mac issues with firefox but when I clicked through to it this morning it seems to be working fine. This is a great addition! I'm so excited to finally have integrated Gantt charts for my projects and am very keen to keep seeing improvements and growth in the app.
Thanks

Inappropriate?Hi
I just purchased planner for active collab which is very exciting however after install we are getting an error when the projects attempt to load. See scrn shot. Could it be that we use https?
Is this the best support channel?
Thanks
Adam
I’m undecided
-
Yes, the problem can be because of HTTPS. We have had similar issues on Reports module earlier. What's your URL style? Are you using clean URLs with HTTPS?
I strongly feel accessing this over HTTP will solve the current problem. But we will also take HTTPS support at a higher priority now.
As for support channel, yes, this is the place for support now. We like to be open and invite community participation in these products.
Thanks. -
Yes we are using clean URL's - https://projects.abc.com/public/index...
Is it possible to exclude just this page from https? Would that solve it?
Thanks -
Give us a couple of days. Trying to get a fix on this. If we can't will suggest some workarounds.
Thanks. -
Inappropriate?Hi,
I am following up the fix on the https for the gantt charts, it has been 18 days and we are still waiting very eagerly for this.
Do you have a current ETA or a fix??
Thanks
Mel -
Sorry Mel.. We've been busy preparing to launch another product. We will be free in a couple of days and will release another version of Planning module in about a week. That will fix HTTPS problem. -
Mel: Are you on IIS too? If you are on Apache, making sure the entire AC installation is using HTTPS (via config.php) will make the Planning module work as well. -
Inappropriate?Hi Nirav,
Any updated on the https being fixed? We are very eager and it has now been 1 week.
I’m waiting
-
Inappropriate?Planning module works well with HTTPS. Please ensure that the entire AC installation is running off HTTPS and your browser trusts the certificate.
Sorted out the problem on Fabienne / Adam's server. It was related to a specific PHP feature we used. Their server is IIS and the feature we used did not work as expected there. We have made a fix and things work on their servers.
The fix will be available to all customers in the next update to Planning module.
I’m excited
-
Thanks Nirav, excellent after sales support. It's great to have it working!
