Auto-Complete Twitter Names
Would be nice if tweety could auto complete twitter names from your list of contacts / followers when typing an @ reply or D DirectMessage

I came to love the way DestroyTwitter (yes, an AIR client; crazy) and others handle this. The auto-complete UI only appears if you type an @ with a letter immediately behind it. Then a menu pops up to start finishing the name. Hit enter to select and insert it it with a single space after the name, and keep typing your message, or type another @ and begin the process over to add more than one name. Non-intrusive, very intuitive. The same behavior and menu could be called in Tweetie by beginning a message with a "d" and a space.

I couldn't resist - based on Tweetie 1.1, this mockup shows an alternative idea for implementing username autocompletion.

Today I am keen on sharing all my ideas and thinks again that I have tried to put into Tweetr.
I have to suggest a few changes to this recommendation because there are some issues with the API.
1. Auto Complete for any message starting with "@" or "d "
2. Since the get followers API only shows top 100 (it might have changed since I last looked). Tweetie might want to track all names of the people that you has appeared in the timeline, because you will reply to anyone you see in your main timeline. (well 99% of the time).
Thanks again. John.

Nambu does this, and it sucks. I start trying to write something and a person's username comes up instead.
Auto-complete is bad, but auto-suggestion would be nice, if:
a) Only if a phrase is started with @
b) Only people you're following/follow you.
I’m worried

Inappropriate?@atebits commented that it would probably be how friend selection when composing a tweet would be implemented

Inappropriate?Twitter name auto-complete is almost always a deal breaker for me when it comes to desktop twitter clients. I am surprised that Tweetie doesn't have this functionality being the high caliber application that it is. I sure hope this gets added soon.

Inappropriate? This will probably be implemented shortly, notice how it's already there for direct messages...

I can't find it currently for direct messages. How does this work? -
However, the auto-complete is case-sensitive at the moment. For example, if I have a friend named @Linda, direct message auto-complete works if I use a capital 'L'. If I use a lower-case 'l' though, her name is not picked up. Kind of a bummer :( -
Can't find it either... -
yeah, i don't get it? -
Inappropriate?Glad to hear about autocomplete. Lounge has it and it's a wonderful feature!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Guys, the direct messages are under Twitter > Direct Messages or command+3 or you click the little envelope icon on the left of the Tweetie window.
-
Don't see no autocomplete! -
Inappropriate?ok, I found it. To use auto complete you have to do command-shift-n
extremely hidden if you ask me ;)
I’m unsure
-
Oh I see now. Sorry guys. Ok now it's back to what my first comment was about : the auto-complete being case-sensitive :) -
that's only for direct messages though right? not to drop a name in a tweet -
Inappropriate?Ok. Great!

That's pretty much exactly how we'd like to implement it. We're not very fond of half baked ideas. -
Yes this is the right approach. Autocomplete can drive you nuts sometimes. -
Yes nambu sucks at this so please don't mimic their implementation. -
www.peoplebrowsr.com Has this & it works really well. So the problem you're pointing out is probably more UI than concept itself... -

Inappropriate?John has some good poits here. It should only auto complete when a twee starts with '@' or 'd '.

Inappropriate?Good point! Would be nice to have that feature.

Inappropriate?I don't think messing around with clunky menus and buttons is the right way to go (for anything).
EventBox has this working pretty well. Type '@' and hit escape and a list of all previously used/seen usernames appears. You can continue typing to further filter the names and use up/down to navigate the list. When you get to the name you want, hit return and continue typing.
The menu-based option would limit a user to sending messages to just one person - the @-Esc method allows multi-user tweeting, which is quite popular.

I like both, but having an in-line mechanism to address people, as you described, would be my priority. -
having to hit escape is a standard, but inconvenient method. I prefer auto-complete to just start working when I type @ or d -

I like this approach. Being non-intrusive is the key. -
Inappropriate?I like the idea of the names beginning after the @ or d is added alphabetically Brad's approach works in desktop clients. Why not here?
-
Inappropriate?I'd love to switch to Tweetie as my Twitter Application of ChoiceTM but TweetDeck spoiled me with the auto-complete of Twitter handles...
I really like Tweetie though and if this gets implemented I'd be happy to even purchase it.
I’m excited
