The current implementation of "preview URL" is pretty clumsy (despite the animated window ;). Nambu does this well by expanding the URL in place, but only showing the domain. That's a good compromise between showing the URL and having long, ugly URLs that take up several lines.
In any case, i agree that a tooltip on mouse-hover would be a great solution to show the full URL, whether it's showing the original short URL or something else.
I’m hopeful

Perhaps some kind of preview on hover would be more appropriate?

Or alternatively, mouse over the link shortened link and then expand

Inappropriate?Definitely prefer auto-expand (as an option) over the hover/preview options just mentioned.

Expanding and only showing domain, and then showing the whole on-hover (without hover-delay), sounds perfect! -
Expanding tiny URLs inline is excellent (to show at least the target domain), and I definitely like the idea of showing the full and complete URL as a mouse-hover. This could be quite awesome. -
Inappropriate?100% agree with EagerEyes

Inappropriate?I like the way EventBox handles this - it just auto-expands the URL when listing the tweet. I guess that would place an overhead, and a tooltip could prove less resource-intensive, but it's more desirable to me.

Inappropriate?I would love to see expanded URLs and even thumbnails of picture links on the Conversation screen.

Inappropriate?I don't mind the separate box (although it's not as integrated as it could be), but I don't like that Safari windows pop on top of Tweetie when clicking through expanded URLs. Direct links in the main window open behind like I set it in the preferences, but that behavior is not duplicated through the expanded URL window.
I’m mildly annoyed.

Inappropriate? Thanks guys, I'm glad I wasn't the only interested in this feature!
There are some great points however personally I'd really like to see the full URL expanded. With URLs displayed in a blue font, eyes can easily skim over the the longest URLs. (I've found this to be the case with EventBox which I find handles this feature perfectly.)
As great as the hover and other options sound, I think it's much faster and convenient to read through multiple tweets featuring already expanded URL rather than having to hover over each individual one. -
Inappropriate? One more thing... Another great addition to this feature would be to change the colour of visited URLs. That way when the latest trend URL is re-tweeted via different shortening services (and automatically expanded by Tweetie), you'll already know if you've seen it before.
Think about how much time we could save!
I’m happy about the possibilities

Inappropriate?I'd vote for inline expanding on click of a short url within the tweet if the preference is selected.
-
Inappropriate? If you don't want to see the full URL inline, show it on hover. If you do want to see if inline (yes please!), then set a preference to do that.
Just get rid of that extra window entirely. :)

Inappropriate? As much as I like having short URLs expanded inline, I think there are merits to not obfuscating the shortened URLs themselves. Seeing people post them is an excellent way to discover new (and better!) URL shortening services.
I also think there's merit to the current UI. Mouse-hover events can be incredibly annoying and will easily get in the way. On-click events, however, will only be triggered when the software unequivocally knows the user's intent. Maybe if the current pop-up interaction model were to happen in the same screen area as Tweetie's main window (rather than in the middle of the screen, where it can get lost on larger monitors), it wouldn't feel so awkward... or maybe if it was an inline "lightbox" kind of pop-up rather than a separate pop-up window? -
Have you ever used Twitter Search (the website, not the feature)? The method it uses to expand and contract short urls is awesome. -
Inappropriate?URL shorteners are the bane of my existence and anything to hide the fact that they exist, and show a valid URL, gets high marks from me.
