Why is Match of the Day always unavailable on iPlayer?
On several different occasions, I've come to the BBC website to watch Match of the Day and every single time, of all the programs that I can watch with your iPlayer, Match of the Day is always unavailable.
I watch less that 5 hours of television a week. Match of the Day is part of that 5 hours, yet the monkey gods of eternal irony see fit to block from watching the only thing that's actually worth watching.
I live in Yorkshire. Not the Maldives. Not the Cayman Islands. Yorkshire.
Why can I not watch Match of the Day?

Hello
Unfortunately the BBC doesn't have the rights to broadcast Match of the Day on the BBC iPlayer. There's a bit more about this on the iPlayer website:

Inappropriate?Hi Andrew and thanks for the reply.
Someone else mentioned this as being a possibility, but if this is the case, why are you showing Match of the Day in the iPlayer listings if it's not ever going to be available? All you're doing is confusing the crap out of people — people like me.
Just remove Match of the Day all together.
Incidentally, I posted my question here on GetSatisfaction and on the BBC website simultaneously, just to see if a public venue would be more motivational than a regular support request. I'm still waiting for a response from the BBC support team...
I’m wondering what it is we're paying a TV licence for

Inappropriate?I'm not on the iPlayer team so I can't give you a direct answer, however I believe the reason it's listed in the listings on the iPlayer site, is because it allows them to say it's not available rather than there just being a gap in the listings.
You can either confuse people by not mentioning it at all, or you can confuse people by mentioning it. Bit of a no win situation. -
Inappropriate? You cannot confuse people by not listing something that isn't available. That's simply doesn't make any sense.
By that logic (such that it is), why list Hancock, Yes Minister or Porridge? They're not available either.
And without wanting to sound rude, but why is that you're replying to a question about iPlayer, when by your own admission, you're not a member of the iPlayer team? -
"... why [NOT] list Hancock, Yes Minister or Porridge?" -
Inappropriate?I don't see MotD listed on iPlayer. I presume you mean on /programmes? - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00j49r0 - which I agree, does imply that the content should be on iPlayer at some point.

I go through the website itself and click on an item in the listings. -
It is there if you go through the day by day listings - for example
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/tv/bbc_o... (Saturday's listings) -
I'll shut up then :) -
Inappropriate? If it's not listed, people wonder why it's not there - they may hunt around, trying to find it - hence you can confuse them!
-
Inappropriate?Andrew, I appreciate your time, but the reasons you give simply don't owe anything to common sense. None whatsoever. You're confusing people.
I've got letters after my name and I was confused. There was no obvious explanation on the web page I was on at the time and I found nothing explaining this issue in the FAQ page I found.
Put simply, I'm just not satisfied.
And I still haven't got an official reply from the BBC proper.

Inappropriate?Like I said, this isn't my area and I'm not the one who made the decision. However my role in the BBC involves making decisions similar to this kind of decision, and ultimately I can see why they did it.
And it's a case of, if you show a day's schedule of BBC One in iPlayer, as they do, not every programme will be available in the iPlayer.
So you have three options.
1) do what happens now and show the programmes in the listings that you can't watch online. Causes some confusion as we know.
2) miss out programmes that don't appear in the iPlayer. This means your days listing page has gaps. This will cause some confusion - i.e. why does BBC One's schedule have nothing on it between 10:30pm and 11:30pm or whatever. Confusion there is inevitable - it just is. During my years at the BBC, I've watched many of usability sessions, watching real people get totally confused over something I think is blindingly obvious and really easy. So I am pretty confident that if you didn't show Match of the Day on that page, there would be people going "Eh? Where's Match of the Day? Why can't I find it? Is my PC broken?"
3) don't have a schedule page. This is not desirable because there will be people who caught a programme at a time, but don't know the name. So they can go to the BBC One listings for Wednesday, look at the time of 8pm and find out it was Waterloo Road.
Note that none of those options is perfect. There is a flaw in every one.
It is of course only an issue on those schedule pages. If you go to the Sport category of iPlayer, you won't find Match of the Day listed at all. There's an argument it should be listed - perhaps in a separate "Sorry, these shows aren't available" column. But let's not go there ;)
Anyway, we may have to agree to disagree on this one! -
