iStat 2.0 requires access through the firewall on SL?
After installing iStat 2.0, there's a process called istatlocaldeamon (something like that, I don't recall the exact name) which asks for network access through the firewall. Can you outline what this process does?

Taken from Joe G Carroll's comment below.
"I'm afraid that Nitin and subsequent posters seems to have misinterpreted this dialog. This is not actually an indication of iStat Menus trying to "phone home", even to check for updates, as this is not something with which the Leopard/Snow Leopard application firewall concerns itself (if you want software that filters outgoing traffic on the Mac, try Little Snitch).
Rather the OS is asking you if it should allow iStatLocalDaemon to receive unrequested incoming connections. I believe this is normal behaviour for the firewall when it first notices a 3rd party daemon (i.e. a background GUI-less process) is running. The firewall is intended to protect you from outside attacks etc."
Well said.

Inappropriate?I'm not quite sure what you're asking.
iStat Menus 2.0 does have a background process that communicates with the various menu extras. The Snow Leopard firewall should only be for external network traffic.
Are you sure it's the Snow Leopard firewall that's asking, not a third party app? -
Inappropriate?Mark,
I am sure it's the firewall asking and not a third party cause I don't have any other 3rd party apps installed. Take a look at the attached image.
I’m undecided

Inappropriate?BTW, I have the same question popping up on a Leopard (10.5.8) install as well.
-
Inappropriate?Well first of all most Apps communicate with the internet usually to the Update servers. The only difference here is that its actually let you know that its doing so. Nothing to worry about could just be a new thing in the last update about preference panes that try connect to the internet need to be allowed first.

Inappropriate? The same message pops up even if I have the "automatically update" option unchecked. I have nothing against apps talking in the background, just curious as to what they are talking about....
-
Inappropriate? All our apps check for updates (unless you tell them not to), but we never communicate with our servers or send any non-annoymous data back. We only ever send what's needed to actually make the app work (that goes for our iPhone apps as well... there's NO usage tracking etc).
Wonder why there's a connection being made there. Hmm. Will have to investigate. -
Inappropriate? This should be fairly easy to replicate as it has happened on 3 systems that I have installed iStat menu 2.0 on. To replicate, just make sure your firewall is running and has the following settings:
- Automatically allow signed software......(checked)
- Enable stealth mode (checked) -
Inappropriate?Thanks for the info.

Inappropriate?so denying istat from getting unrequested traffic coming in has NO EFFECT on the program? is there any feature that will be lacking if i tell the firewall to block this or is it just a paranoid OS trying to make sure all background apps have permission to connect even if they dont need or request this?
does istat ever need unrequested incomming traffic? if not, the choice to allow or deny is irrelevant.
I’m wanting resolve
