Check-in for friends
I find that I'm often hanging out at certain places with friends. Rather than all of us each checking in individually, it would kind of be cool to check-in with or for friends.
For example, if I go to a party and show up with a friend, I'd like to check in for both of us (why should my friend need to pull out her cell as well?). The SMS syntax could be:
@Ritual Roasters +username1 +username2
Now, whether you automatically push out that update to your friends' friends is open for discussion, but I imagine that if my friend has marked me as a friend on Brightkite, it could be an opt-in permission that I set: "Let my friends check in for me." "Only let my trusted friends check in for me."
And, when I visit my dashboard, I would see a message to confirm the check in permanently: "Your friend [username] checked you in to Ritual Roasters four hours ago. Were you there? Yes / No"

Inappropriate?As long as the people checking in for me are people I've designated with those permissions, that seems like a great idea!

Inappropriate?This is a good idea. Maybe upon texting in @Ritual Roasters +username1 +username2 Brightkite would immediately ping via text username1 & 2 asking them "Check in with username? reply with Y or ignore"
We currently have the JOIN command which accomplishes this from a slightly different angle. -
Inappropriate?Just to get some background on your thoughts, why are you asking for that feature? Is it because your friends forget to check in, or because it is too cumbersome?
-
Mostly that it's a pain to check in when someone else has already done it. I'll be like, "Oh I'm checking in to Brightkite" and my friend will be like "Man, it's just a pain to check in to where you just checked in. Why can't you just do it?" Even if the mobile UI made this really easy, I think there's something that's really social/trusting/natural about letting others check you in. -
We'll give it some thought...really, we just need to make checkins a lot easier (something we are working on). -
Inappropriate?I would rather check in for myself! Have someone check in and then "join USERNAME".
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate?Followed the link to this one thanks to Erica. This isn't exactly what I was suggesting on Twitter but it's a good idea as well. What I was hopping for is something where a group of people are getting together and getting food, drinks, etc.. or hanging out over longer periods of time. You could say "group USERNAME" and then anywhere that person checked in you would auto check in as well. This could work for groups easily for anyone "grouping" with any member of the group.
I’m thankful

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate?Hi Seanbonner. Interesting thought, we will consider the idea of "group USERNAME".
