Check-in via Twitter
I was going to suggest adding the ability to check-in via IM, but then I found this: http://tinyurl.com/6ys3wa
So maybe an alternative would be to send a direct message to a dedicated Twitter account (“d brightkite @home”). That way we could just use Twitter’s Jabber bot, which seems pretty stable.

Inappropriate?Seconded. Great idea.

Inappropriate?Thirded! Would be great to be able to send a message to check in at a location and ideally (optionally) add a note
I’m hopeful

Inappropriate?I love this idea. Suggested it a couple of weeks ago. They didn't seem interested, said it was a good idea for a third party to do through forthcoming API. Phoooooey! This should totally be done, and it's easy to do. We did something VERY similar on http://www.pittsburgh2050.com and it works like a charm.
I’m not surprised more people think this is a good idea, because it is.

Inappropriate? The d brightkite @home idea would be excellent.
That way we can carry on using our favorite Twitter tools.
I’m waiting!!!

Inappropriate?I think that's a great idea, and maybe would open a way for very easy sharing of information between these two services ... so I can use both services at the same time
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Actually it wouldn't even have to be via direct messages. The bot could be checking L:-location tags or the twitter location, too - if I change either one, it would be nice to auto-update the brightkite location.

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate?Top suggestion. Was gonna suggest the very same thing. http://iwantsandy.com/ uses this (direct message) and it works a treat. This would also sort out most of the international users without brightkite SMS support as Twitter has good international SMS coverage.
I’m hopeful

Inappropriate?Really like this idea, means that I can easily SMS my location, even though I live in Australia.
I’m excited
