Event checkins via mashup
I saw an idea previously involving event checkins. I have an idea to take that a step further: notification and checkin to nearby events based on proximity.
Rather than reinvent the wheel, mashup some of the event calendar services (such as eventful, upcoming, Last.fm etc) and if you checkin to a location during an event or near an ongoing (or soon to start) event, prompt for additional checkin to that event.
As for the idea regarding future checkins, it's true that Plazes and Dopplr do it well, but they are still both negated if ones Brightkite account is tied to their event calendar account. Again, just prompt for confirmation of checkin at the appropriate time.

Inappropriate?I have a similar want/need. I would just like to be able to create an Event (cause there isn't already one) and be able to check into it and create an event stream for it. I'm currently at a conference and I just have to checkin at the hotel instead of the Conference. It would be much cooler to just have a "place" (which is actually an Event) for the Conference. Are you guys still working on this?

Inappropriate?Serff, what you can do is email any conference info (now and in the future) to lesley[at]brightkite.com and we can create a custom public placemark for that event.
For example, we did one for SXSW:
http://brightkite.com/places/aa6647a0...
So all users had to do was text or search "sxsw" to check in to the convention center.
I'm sure we'll have a better way for users to do this down the road, but for now it's no trouble at all for us to do it for you.
