Facebook Connect makes no sense

I find it very frustrating that the Facebook Connect updates only work if my account is set to "public," and it doesn't make any sense. I don't want any random person to know where I am at any given time, but my Facebook account has tight privacy and only my friends can see my posts. I would love for them to know I'm in the neighborhood, but as Brightkite is currently oriented, I can't update my Facebook friends without making my whereabouts completely public. Why can't Brightkite allow users to grant Facebook access without granting it to the entire world? It seems like this must be a very common concern.

A few months ago I went on vacation and updated along the way just for fun, but then got nervous that advertising the fact that I was hundreds of miles from home might not be a great idea where my home's security was concerned, so I stopped. Not long after I got back, a Facebook friend was going on vacation and she asked me what that cool mapping app I used was. I told her it was Brightkite, but explained why I stopped updating with it. She said "yeah, that doesn't sound ideal" and chose not to use it. I'm telling you this as an example of the fact that the site is very appealing, but this very simple issue is making people write it off. I'm hoping this will be one of the things that gets corrected with the big "Brightkite 2.0" update.
