Friendfeed to Twitter/Facebook Double Post Issue
On FriendFeed, when I check in with a note or picture, it posts 2 entries on my FriendFeed (see the In and Out burger post here http://friendfeed.com/timejar -- my friendfeed is set to update my Twitter status, and Twitter updates facebook. However, friendfeed pulls the post that just has the location name, instead of the post where it has the location and my comment. My comment post is the one that should appear in Friendfeed and broadcast to Twitter, not the duplicate location post. Thanks

Inappropriate?Hi TimeJar, sorry for the confusion. Those aren't double posts but rather two separate events, one for the checkin and then one for your note/photo (which has location info attached to it). Even though the action is combined, we keep the events separate on Brightkite and those get shared separately to Friendfeed. We have no plans to change this, but we are working on some solutions to make it less confusing.
One workaround is to have your Brightkite updates go to Twitter, you can set this up under Account Settings -> Sharing and you can select what gets sent to Twitter (an option you don't have with updates pulled to FF). Since you just want your notes and photos sharing, you would just check those two options. We also have a Facebook app coming very soon, so once that's released you'll be able to share your updates directly with Facebook.

Inappropriate?I've been following this topic among several users and Lesley's responses to each. Users seem to think this first action is redundant yet BK stands firm on the position that it will not make changes to the application. I'm not satisfied by pushing out raw data in the form of location only without deeper context. If I were a hot air balloon or a Ferris wheel, the location post alone might suffice. Since I'm a person, in what could be a crowded public square, I need to give context to where I am and what I'm doing. I shouldn't have to wait for the default location post before being able to add this context. Changing this function on the BK end means that lifestreaming apps like FriendFeed, Twitter, and Facebook receive only the posts that I choose, appended with all the necessary context. Until that change is made, I'm frustrating all my cohorts that follow my lifestreams.

Inappropriate? We did just implement what are called "implicit checkins" last night. So now when you check in and post a note/photo from the iPhone app, your checkin will basically be hidden (won't send out notifications or show in the Brightkite streams) but your location will be updated on your profile and your note/photo will show at that location. That should help with the confusion around the combined actions in the iPhone app.
We are still working with this idea and how to apply it to the service as a whole and not just for those who use the app, so you should see some changes with this in the future.

I downloaded the update in iTunes and just used it! It works as you say. I'm guessing users will be much more enthused about adding deeper meaning to their posts. I know I will. Thanks for the heads-up, Lesley. -
I'm liking the idea of not displaying the checkin to friendfeed, it is really relevant only when I want to post something. On this same topic, would the facebook integration allow a checkin to be posted to my news feed without updating my status? I can create a separate thread if need be. Keep up the good work, changes are looking good.
