It would be cool to offer a "check out" feature.
Sometimes I leave a place and want to be "in limbo" -- or "nowhere". While I understand the concept of "last seen at", sometimes I'd just prefer to go incognito.
A really simply way to offer this feature would be a command that I send called "checkout" -- and it would just remove me from being in any particular place... i.e. "We're not sure where Chris is right now." Or, "Chris last checked out of [placename]." This would be in addition to the privacy settings, and primarily would be a way to help people know whether to expect to see their friends somewhere.
For example, last night, I went to a bar, checked in, then about an hour or so later left and went to a movie. An hour into the movie, a got a message from a Brightkite user asking if I was still there. The "checkout" feature would have [ideally] prevented this.

Inappropriate? We used to have that in there, and thinking about bringing it back.

Two points of clarification: 1. no one should feel obligated to "checkout" (it's a convenience factor only) and 2. equally good might be to checkin to "MIA" or "nowhere". -
Agreed. That's exactly how we had it working...here was the message we had for it:
You've checked out and are now in no man's land. When you want to check in someplace else, reply with @address or ?businessname -
Inappropriate?Yeah I like it - I'm happy to keep my feed public, but don't particularly want to give away my home address ... and maybe sometimes I just want to disappear off the map for a bit.
-
Inappropriate? This could be a slider setting of "OFF".
-
Inappropriate?Another obvious point here is, if you're traveling between places, or just going for a walk. Lots of times when you're not /really/ anywhere!
-
Inappropriate?"In Transit" ?
-
Inappropriate?I suppose a fallback/interim option would be to create a placemark such as "in limbo" (or whatever you want to call it), and set the location to just your given state or country. Even if you are in transit, in limbo, between places, whatever - you will still usually be in your normal/local/home state or country. :)
I’m in limbo playing limbo

but what if you're actually here: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en...,-95.677068&sspn=51.177128,107.402344&ie=UTF8&ll=21.134404,-101.68499&spn=0.007425,0.013111&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr -
haha I never thought to check actually - but I guess in that case, you'd be in trouble as everyone would know where you are when you don't want them to! :P -
Inappropriate?A 'checkout ' would be great. While checking brightkite to see if any friends were down at the pub, it would be very useful to see a message like 'left [place] 30 minutes ago' than 'about 3 hours ago @ [place]'.

Inappropriate?Actually, if you look in the SMS guide, there is a checkout SMS command ("leave"), but it didn't work for me.
