no longer receiving SMS notification updates in canada
as of january 10, 2009 i'm no longer receiving SMS notification updates in canada. i have an iphone 3G on a fido plan. the funny thing is, i used to get them all the time. i've been a brightkite user since it was in private beta and sms notifications have always worked on my old rogers motorola SLVR7 as well as my new fido iphone 3G.
why is there a change now? my friend with the same phone on the same network can't even get an sms confirmation with his new number.
any suggestions?

Inappropriate?Hi Jinglan, we checked our logs and we are still sending messages out, they're just not making it to your phone. We will investigate further to see if we can identify the problem.

Inappropriate?Okay, our SMS gateway provider was able to fix the problem. What happened is when you ported your number from Rogers to Fido, the messages were still being routed to Rogers. They manually updated your number to route to Fido, so you should be good to go. Please let us know if you're still not receiving your notifications.

Inappropriate?thanks so much for your prompt replies Lesley. unfortunately, i've monitored my brightkite stream today and i'm still not receiving any sms notifications. the solution and explanation you offered sounds plausible but i ported my number over from Rogers to Fido months earlier and only recently (as of January 10th, 2009) stopped receiving sms notifications.
any more help in this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Canadian SMS is kind of tricky since it technically doesn't work with our US shortcode or our international number. Some lucky people have gotten their phones to work with our US shortcode, but if you're one of the people who can't receive a confirmation code there is not much we can do. The only real solution is to set up a Canadian specific shortcode, unfortunately we don't have an ETA on when we'll be able to do that. If you like, you can email your phone number to lesley[at]brightkite.com and I will call our SMS gateway provider to see if there is anything they can do. -

Inappropriate?Hi Asad, our shortcode is 80289 and it's just a short US number that is easy to remember and send messages to. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_code
The problem with Canadian SMS is that it is not compatible with our international SMS number and only some people have had luck getting it to work with our US shortcode (it's technically not compatible either). If you're not receiving your confirmation code, chances are we won't be able to do anything to make it work.
If you can send text messages to an email address, you can still check in and post stuff from your phone by sending your messages to your xxxx@bkite.com email address that is listed under your Account Settings -> Mobile.
I'm sorry we can't be of more help. The only real solution is for us to set up a Canadian SMS number, but unfortunately we don't have any ETA on when we'll be able to do that. -
Inappropriate?Hope this doesn't jinx things. I'm based in Vancouver, B.C., and when Brightkite announced that their new shortcode to 41414, I tried setting up SMS on my iPhone again and it works. I get SMS notification of nearby checkins, and have successfully posted to BK using the shortcode. YMMV.
