Verizon support?
Excited about Brightkite, but finding it seriously hobbled because no Verizon support. Ouch.

Inappropriate? We want to support Verizon, but they're taking their sweet time to support us...they gave us an ETA of end of this quarter :(

So Martin, users like myself and texburgher below have been working hard to inform other Verizon users that they can use their *****@bkite.com email address to check in (because we like Brightkite so much and don't want Verizon users to be turned off), but Brightkite staff seems conspicuously reticent to provide the same advice themselves--is there a reason for this that we should know about? -
No, you're welcome to use the email functionality :) I just forgot to mention it above, but we've answered this before. -
Inappropriate?Check in via SMS to email address instead of to their shortcode. It's in settings>mobile on your account. It's not in the right place to be easily found, but it is there and verizon users do have full functionality through that means. I'm one, and I use it ALL THE TIME. //texburgher
I’m happy to help this great service evolve
-
Inappropriate? So, Jordan and texburgher, I can SMS to my *****@bkite.com address instead of to my SMS number? All it says on the settings>mobile page is that I can send photos to that address. I'll give it a try!
I’m filled with anticipation
-
Inappropriate?Indeed it does. I'm up and running. Thanks for the help!
I’m Brightkiting like a pro.
-
Inappropriate? Are there now issues with Brightkite processing SMS messages sent to my *****@bkite.com address? None of my mobile updates are now working. Verizon is really getting on my nerves.
I’m annoyed
-
We have disabled any emails coming from vtext.com due to an issue on Verizon's end. Verizon has told us that they'll have an update for us within the next 48 hours. We'll update you once we know more. -
Hi Martin, thanks for the update. Given the glacial speed with which Verizon has moved in implementing the normal text method, I'm not holding my breath on this. -
Inappropriate?I'd like to suggest - and I'm doing it myself - that Verizon users call Verizon Wireless Customer Service and give them some real pushback on their pervasive impediments to their customers using otherwise open services. If they only hear from Martin and company, they're only hearing one side of the coin. I've had Verizon problems with twitter and @messages, with Flickr and video as well. It's time for them to be called onto the mat.
I’m fine
-
Inappropriate?Unfortunately we have received no update from Verizon thus far.
-
Inappropriate?Update: Verizon has fixed the email issue and we have enabled emails from vtext.com. If you have been charged multiple times by Verizon for text messages, they said you can call their customer service and they will take care of it.

Inappropriate?Great first step for Verizon. So many to go though.
If there's a Verizon rep reading this, you ought to figure out how to get some metrics on how many erstwhile loyal VZW customers will have switched to AT&T within 2 years of the June '07 release date of the iPhone. And realize it's not specifically about iPhone. It's about VZW's 1999 walled-garden stance in the market.
I’m fine
-
Inappropriate?updates are going through, but no replies are coming back. last night the SMS number worked through Verizon, but replies aren't coming back now...
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? It looks like Verizon has the same duplicate email issues, again. We've disabled any incoming emails from vtext.com until they can resolve this more permanently.
We're no spamming you, promise, we're just responding to all the duplicate incoming messages. If you've been affected, please call Verizon and tell them about them problem. -
Inappropriate?it's no big deal.. just wanted to let you know it wasn't sending replies. good luck resolving!
I’m hopeful
-
Actually, it still is, because we're still getting duplicates. If your messages from vtext are coming through, something is wrong. -
Hmm, yeah, I was wrong. My status post didn't get updated. I was assuming pictures sent from a verizon phone also went through vtext.com but I see now that they don't, and thus those still work. -
Inappropriate?hmmm I tried using the email to send a photo from my handset and it no work :( I have the LG VX 9100M and I should be able to send emails right?
I’m depressed
-
Inappropriate?Hey all, the official word is still that emails from vtext.com are not being accepted by Brightkite right now, because the duplicate email issue on Verizon's end is still unresolved.
@chris - shouldn't matter what type of phone you have. once vtext.com emails are re-allowed for checking in, you'll be fine again.
I’m patient, relaxed, and 5'11"
-
Inappropriate?Photos should be working though since they come from vzwpix.com and I know for a fact that it worked today since I uploaded a picture today using this method. I'm using the first incarnation of the LG Chocolate.
-
Inappropriate?I sent a photo last night, but it didn't go through.
-
Inappropriate?I also have VZW. For the last few days my emails from a vtext.com email address have not been recognized by bkite.com. I guess this is intentional at this point.
However, I just did manage to check in via email anyhow -- I sent my check-in as a PIX message (with no picture) so it was sent from a vzwpix.com rather than a vtext.com address.
To do this, I selected New Message > PIX Message and then proceeded normally. I just didn't insert a picture. I included my check-in text in the "Text" area rather than the "Subject" area of the message. I think VZW PIX-FLIX messaging usually includes a blurb at the bottom advertising itself, but Brightkite seems to have managed to ignore that in this case. I used a very simple address (just a city and state).
I’m feeling a little better now

This was exactly what I needed to get this working thanks for the tip! -
Inappropriate?Dang, vtext.com is still blocked? I'm in the midst of a three week road trip and was hoping to update Brightkite from the road. May try a gmail forwarding option to filter and redirect check-ins; replies from bkite via SMS appears to still be working.
I’m kinda bummed
-
Inappropriate? You can't redirect through gmail because gmail keeps the original sender as the from: but nbr's way works really well (thanks!) and that's what I've been using today.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?sending photos via verizon (vzwpix.com) no worky para me
I’m whatever, I should be doing more productive things
-
Inappropriate?Have there been any new developments? While the pix messaging seems like a good workaround, not all Verizon text users have picture messaging. And at 25 cents per pix message from my phone, I'd rather have my free texts working again.
I’m annoyed. This is making me not want to use the site.
-
Inappropriate?Text messaging plans include picture messaging. i.e. if you have 500 plan, you get 500 pix/text/video messages. Once you have a plan, there is no distinction in the prices until you go over your alloted amount.
-
Not all plans include picture messaging. I know my plan is only text. -
Inappropriate?ahh sigh of relief...
I have the unlimited text plan. 500 haha .. I got 500 per day when I was having my device updates come through for everyone on Twitter.
I’m relieved
-
Inappropriate? No updates from Verizon still? What's the best way to harass them to get on the ball on this: via tech support? I'll stay on the phone as long as it takes to get someone to take note and send it up the food chain.
I’m whatev
-
Yes, calling their support would be the way to go. Maybe if they get enough requests they'll finally do what they said would be done in February. -
Inappropriate? We have unblocked the vtext.com emails, please report any problems to us immediately. :)
I’m happy Verizon finally fixed this
-
Yay! -
Inappropriate?ok is there some delay? I texted @ 37203 to 80289 and it no worky.
-
They still don't have the SMS number. Where you would put the number, you instead put your private ****@bkite.com email address. Then you can send the update. -
Chris J is correct. We've unblocked it so you can email texts to Brightkite, but Verizon still does not support Brightkite through SMS. -
Inappropriate? For the record, I have an XV6800 (windows mobile) and I have my own independent email account setup on the phone and it works seemlessly. If you have a WM phone, you should consider doing the same and updating brightkite always through email.
I’m Quite Content
-
Inappropriate?I'd just like to add that I'm using a Blackberry 8130 on Verizon, and it's working great (the email, that is. Haven't tried sms).
I’m happy
-
Beala, Verizon still does not support SMS for Brightkite. Glad to hear that email is working for you though! :) -
Inappropriate?Email is working great again with my phone. Replies from Bkite are coming back via the email address, so even if you haven't registered your phone via SMS (I somehow pulled that off weeks ago), it'll still work just fine for you.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Anyone been able to do this successfully recently? I've tried sending several messages to the private email address and they don't seem to be coming in. In the text area I should be able to put like "! test" and that show up as a note for where I'm currently at correct?
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?Mwalters, we had to block incoming emails from Verizon because they were getting caught in a loop and creating a lot of duplicate posts. This has happened twice before. Once Verizon fixes the problem we will unblock the emails. You can follow/friend us on Brightkite and Twitter (username Brightkite) for status updates on things like this.
-
Inappropriate?Has verizon support been restored yet? I love Brightkite but I haven't been able to check-in in a week and a half.
I’m frustrated
-
Unfortunately not yet, we're still waiting on Verizon. I'll be sure to post here when we have an update. You can also friend us on Brightkite (username Brightkite) where we post updates as well. -
Inappropriate?just saw this reply from Verizon regarding their Brightkite issue:
underdog512, Official Rep, replied 10 days ago
Verizon Wireless does not block ANY sms unless you ask them to. Maybe your Brightkite is broken.
Are you kidding me? Verizon seriously needs to get their act together!
I’m FURIOUS with Verizon & their crap.
-
Where did this "Underdog" come from? -
See here: http://getsatisfaction.com/verizonwir... -
Inappropriate?Yeah and they probably don't drop everything after the @ symbol either... That is what makes twitter txt messages suck on verizon.
-
Inappropriate?I was wondering what's going on. I still get alerts from other people checking in but mine has completely stopped working. It lets me post pics sometimes but for the most part, BK is dead on my phone. I've been stuck checked in at work for 15 days now lol. Checking in through the PC is weak :P Hopefully it gets fixed. Oh and I was using the email way of checking in, pics, etc.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I figured out a workaround for this verizon text situation. You can setup a rule in gmail to forward emails coming from you cell to your bkite address. For instance: My text msg emails come from 812989xxxx@vtext.com. I setup a filter for emails coming from 812989xxxx@vtext.com to be forwarded to my bkite private address. Then setup another rule to forward all emails from your private bkite address to your cell phone.
I’m happy
-
that's a cool workaround Chris J :) But not such a good option if you ever send texts to your own email (which I do). Still, good to know. Maybe the convenience will make it worthwhile for me to stop using my texts to my own email. Do you notice any significant additional lag due to the extra step? I've been using the blank picture message solution since bkite has blocked emails from vtext.com -
You can get around that problem using another Gmail feature. You can customize a Gmail address by adding a plus sign followed by any string you like to your username, and then set up a filter based on that. For example, if your Gmail address was bodhi@gmail.com, you could set up a filter in Gmail to forward to Brightkite every message addressed to bodhi+brightkite@gmail.com. I know it sounds strange, but this actually does work. That being said, I've been using the vzwpix.com messaging solution too. -
Theoretically this shouldn't work since gmail doesn't strip the original sender when it forwards. It still looks like it is coming from your phone. Either something is going crazy or they've turned verizon texts to private addresses back on. -

Doesn't work as far as I can see. As others have said, I'm assuming it's because the from address is not stripped. -
I swear that it worked this afternoon when I tried it. I don't know what I did differently but it's not working for me either now. Sorry I got everyone's hopes up. I'm just as disappointed. -
Unfortunately we have yet to hear anything from Verizon on this matter. We have everything in place on our end, so the ball is in their court. :( -
So is it that they've approved the request for the SMS shortcode thingy at this point but just haven't actually implemented it on their services? Sorry, I've seen various things in different places, so I'm not sure what the true story is.
Sorry, I know this must be frustrating for you all. But you do seem to be doing a good job at staying ahead of the curve and being ready for them. So, if it helps any I think you all are doing great :) -

Hi Matt, we've taken the necessary steps in order to be approved, so we're not entirely sure where the holdup is. We continue to try what we can in order to get this working. Thanks for the positive feedback, we are glad that you like Brightkite! :) -
Inappropriate?Verizon has approved Brightkite! You can now send SMS to the 80289 shortcode! :)
I’m excited

Inappropriate? But why can I not still visit m.brightkite.com without it giving a connection error? I would like to try and use the mobile site...but it's not loading at all!
I’m frustrated
-
I have no problem logging into the mobile site from my voyager. Have you tried restarting you phone? I've noticed that helps when I get a system error for any mobile website. The other thing that helps is when you log out of the browser function only hit the end key ONCE. If you hit it more than once it causes a "server busy" error on your phone.
Happy Brightkiting.
