Cheating and abuse: Opponent won 't move when close to defeat
Hi,
One of my opponent invited me for an untimed game and wouldn't move when he was close to defeat. Since it was an untimed game he gave me 2 choices, either accept a draw or wait for eternity. When I refused to accept a draw, he started hurling abuses. I have already reported an abuse for this player.
More over I got disconnected and when I was reconnected my points were reduced.
So following is my question,
What happens to my 'report abuse' request? Will there by any action against the player?
Thanks.

FYI: We have made a decision to no longer have the untimed time control option; we originally added it so that users (friends, coach/students) could spend as much time as they wanted playing, analysing, and discussing a game, but it seems that some users don't get, refuse to get or are irritated by the idea that untimed really is untimed and your opponent can effectively stop moving and still be playing in accordance to the rules both opponents agreed to. We are replacing it with a 3 hour time control.

Inappropriate?Hi,
We warn (or ban in some cases) players for abuse, but we cannot do anything about users who do not move. You play untimed games at your own risk - your opponent has the right to use his/her unlimited time so we cannot force them to move or resign. If this is a problem for you, rather play long games that have a time limit (like 45min + 45sec), and leave the untimed games for opponents you actually know (who wont just stop playing) -

Inappropriate? There is a chance that your opponent won't move but it is a risk you take when you play untimed.

Inappropriate?I disagree with this completely. I am currently waiting for an opponent to move in a position where I have unstoppable mate in one! Other sites deal with this and do not allow some to cheat in this way. Just because we are playing an untimed game, it doesn’t mean that cheating is acceptable does it? It is very easy to see that this is cheating and it should be dealt with. I reported the abuse but what good is that if the attitude of the administration is “too bad...play at your own risk”? Of course, I will never play an untimed game again but really, what does this say about this site. Other sites that I play on take strong measures to eliminate and punish cheating; they support their honest players which makes us come back, but as for Chesscube? It makes me question if I wish to play here anymore since it is hard to say what injustice will be ignored next.

Please explain how this is cheating. What rule is he breaking exactly? You keep saying that this is cheating and we should deal with cheats, but I don't see what chess or site rule he is breaking. We also - like other sites - ban cheats. -
Inappropriate?Well...My opponent accepted an untimed game...after 7 moves he asked me to play faster?...after move 11 he requested a take back after a poor move...after move 14 he requested an abort at a point where I had a clear advantage (+3.0)...and then after move 26 I had an unstoppable mate in one and he would not move and would not respond to my questions as to if he was there or not? Finally, he disconnected and lost after he waited for 5 hours! This is clearly cheating and falls into several of the categories that you offer when reporting abuse. I was told that there's a list of known cheaters, why is it not posted and available to all so we can avoid these people? Why are players like this not investigated and banned?
-
"asking to play faster" - not cheating
"requesting takebacks" - not cheating
"requesting aborts" - not cheating
(side note: I hope that your + 3 assesment was done by yourself and not a computer engine - that would be cheating!)
"not moving" - not cheating
"disconnecting" - not cheating
And you you say it is clearly cheating! This could all be seen as annoying and even abusive behaviour, but, again, what rules has he broken? What we consider as cheating is covered in section 4 here: http://www.chesscube.com/acceptable-use - none of what you are describing as cheating is in there.
Cheats are banned.
Highly abusive users are banned.
"Annoying" opponents might be warned - the definition of what is annoying varies so greatly that is best for the ChessCube user to determine for themselves which annoying players to avoid (some users HATE takeback requests, some hate ANY chatting during games... some may not find this annoying/abusive at all). We don't want to create an annoying users list; each user can determine who is annoying by themselves and use the "block" function to no longer play or see such players. -

Bryan,
If you do not want to accept it as cheating then its your and Chesscube's wish. I see this as Chesscube's stand. When I am writing this you have already replaced the untimed games with 3 hours. But my point is more about your policy.
Playing an untimed game takes away the time pressure. I can take whatever time I want to make my next move. Thats what the system offers for an untimed game. But when I manipulate the facility to avoid a defeat then isn't that cheating? More over nobody from chesscube has so far given me a clarification as to why did the system cut my points? -
Softice,
A 3 hour per side game (6 hour game) should really not give you any "time pressure"... you can even play an increment game, like 45+45, which will mean every move you make gets an extra 45 seconds, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about time-scrambles. We will be introducing correspondence chess (day/week etc. per move) for people who do not want to play interactively/real-time, but some people - as you are suggesting - play untimed to remove all time pressure - this means they can move many hours later, and this would be fair. We don't consider this cheating, just possibly annoying. Making the time control 3 hours should clear this up (yes, some users will still stop playing, but they will then lose).
If you are disconnected and do not make it back on to the server within 1 minute, you lose the game and your points are cut. -

Inappropriate?Notes on players would be better. We could attach a note "refuses to move", or "requests unwarranted draw 20 times in a row", or my favourite, "requests takeback, then, in the moment before you hit accept, flips the move number back to 1, so you reset the first move of the game". Then, when we begin a game, if a note pops up, we can decide on playing or aborting the poor sport.

I think this is counter productive. Even I thought of suggesting a black list where you can refer your opponent to be black listed. When you invite someone to play you can view whether he/she has been blacklisted by any body? There we can add a not as for what the player was blacklisted. BUT BUT BUT. Will this work?
I think it won't. It would initiate a tit for tat and everybody at some point in time could get black listed. I think the best way to handle is to know very well all the disadvantages of a particular type of game(like in my case it was untimed.) and then play with its own set of risk and hope that you are playing against a mature and serious player.
On a philosophical note, some times I think life is too short to scratch my head over such petty issues. So the best solution is to forgive the erring players and move on.
Ok enough from me for today. -
Inappropriate?Hi TS,
Not a bad idea. There might have been some talk about this on our side.. but mainly for "positive" notes too :)
We'll let you know..

Inappropriate?I am new to this site and have read all the various posts whilst refusing to move is not "cheating" it is highly unsporting behaviour there is nothing worse than being a move or 2 from checkmating somebody and they just give up without actually resigning, probably hoping u r disconnected before the time runs out. On other sites which i have used the best way to deal with these people is to block them, whether this option is available i don;t know cos im new here, or just badmouth them in the chatroom making at least everybody in the chatroom aware of them and hopefully they won't play them again either.
