"Auto-Mark As Read" doesn't Auto-Mark As Read
I just installed Feedly (version: 1.2.222 (build 2466)) in Firefox 3.0.7, enabled Feedly-mini, turned on Auto-Mark as read and selected "yes - on all the rss enabled websites". However, none of the articles I am visiting are getting "auto-marked as read" in Google Reader.
For example, one of my Google Reader subscriptions is TechCrunch.com. When viewing articles on TechCrunch.com the Feedly-mini toolbar appears, but when I switch over to Google Reader the article I was just reading is still marked unread.
Am I doing something wrong? Do I have the wrong expectations/understanding of how this works?

Inappropriate?Hello. Can you please take a look at the RSS feed URL advertised by techcrunch and the URL of the feed you subscribe to and make sure that they are identical? (Techcrunch has advertized multiple RSS feeds over time)
-
Inappropriate? The current feed advertised on TechCrunch.com is http://feedproxy.google.com/TechCrunch which matches my feed url in Google Reader:

However, when I visit an article on TechCrunch (ie - http://uk.techcrunch.com/2009/03/25/p... ) the Feedly-mini toolbar appears but that article\page does not get marked as read in Google Reader.
I've also tried other sites (like http://scobleizer.com)

but no matter what site/page I visit - Feedly doesn't seem to be marking that article/page as read in Google Reader. For example, I went to this page: http://scobleizer.com/2009/03/24/is-c... and the Feedly-mini toolbar appeared - but that article/page is still "unread" in Google Reader.
I also disabled all other add-ons in Firefox (3.0.7) and visited a number of sites that I subscribe to, and read a bunch of articles on each site. In every case he Feedly-mini toolbar appeared, but Feedly still doesn't mark those Google Reader items as read. What else can I do to help troubleshoot this issue?
By the way - I enjoyed your video-interview with Scoble!
I’m confused

Inappropriate? Thanks for the clarification. Then it must be a bug. We will try to reproduce it and get it fixed this week. Thank you for the heads up and sorry for the frustration.
-
Inappropriate?OK, thanks Edwin.
FYI - I initially installed Feedly on an iMac running OSX 10.5.6 with FF 3.0.7. In the off-chance that this was an environmental issue I also installed Feedly on a laptop running Win XP SP3 w/ FF 3.0.7 - but I still had the same problems as previously described.
Let me know if I can provide any additional information to help you troubleshoot the issue.
I’m anxious for a fix!

Inappropriate?@f00fighter I tried to reproduce this problem but I am not able to. When I go to websites I subscribe too and the mini toolbar gets activated then the matching article in feedly gets marked as read. I tried with several scoble articles. Would it be possible for you to record a small video screenshot of the steps reproducing the problem? That would help use a lot. Thanks. -Edwin

Inappropriate?Hey Edwin - Perhaps the problem is between my keyboard and the back of my chair!?
I thought that the Feedly-mini toolbar would mark the items as read in Feedly AND in Google Reader - did I misunderstand the way the Feedly-mini toolbar works?
I thought that the Feedly mini-toolbar would "watch" what pages I visited - and mark those pages as read in Google Reader AND Feedly if I subscribed to the feed for that site. Based on what you state above, it seems that the Feedly-mini toolbar only marks those items as read in Feedly, but not in Google Reader.
Can you help clear up my confusion?

Inappropriate?Sorry. I meant "marked as read in both Feedly and Google Reader". If you do not seen those articles being marked as read in Google Reader then there is a bug in feedly mini.
The bug could be related to:
1) feedly not being able to match the web page you are reading to an article (hence my initial question regarding making sure that the feedURL matched). The match could fail for other reasons: titles being radically different, URLs being proxied, the article being older than the last 40 articles produced from the blog, etc..
2) feedly is able to do the match but an error happens while feedly try to send the mark as read request to the Google Reader back end (We should see the evidence of that in the messages section of the firefox error console).
3) some other cause.
The hard part here is to be able to reproduce the problem on our side. Given that my basic attempt to reproduce it failed, if you are able to reproduce the problem consistently, a screencast of the problem would help save a lot of time. -
Inappropriate?OK - I will gladly work on a screencast, but need to find software/service to do it...any suggestions?
-
Inappropriate?Great, thanks Edwin - I'll work on recording it tonight.
By the way, as an additional troubleshooting step, I unsubscribed from ALL of my feeds in Google Reader (don't worry - I exported my subscriptions to OPML first) and re-subscribed to the Scobleizer feed (http://scobleizer.com/feed/). There's only one feed in my Google Reader now.
Then I logged out of Feedly and logged back in which rebuilt my Feedly digest. Unfortunately, the articles still aren't getting marked as "read" when I visit the page. The Feedly-mini toolbar appears, but it's not marking the article as "read" in Feedly or Google Reader.
Hopefully having a single feed will make it easier to demonstrate the problem on video and troubleshoot afterwards.
Video to come...

Absolutely. The simpler the use case the better. If we are not able to reproduce it when we have the video, we will send you a debug build with more debug message to try to better understand what could be causing the problem. -
Inappropriate?Hey Edwin - Looks like unsubscribing from all of my previous feeds in Google Reader helped the situation with Feedly a little.
So far I have only added back 2 feeds (scobleizer & techcrunch) out of the 70+ that I had. However, I am now seeing that *some* of the posts/articles I visit on the websites I subscribe to are being marked as read in Google Reader & Feedly.
I have found 2 different articles that refuse to be "marked as read" - one on Scobleizer, one on TechCrunch.
I'll try recording a video here soon...
I’m confused

Inappropriate?Edwin - Here's a video showing an example of the problems I am having:

Inappropriate?I am going to take one of our QA accounts and try to replicate this problem. Expect to hear from us with an update within a couple of hours. Thanks for taking the time to create this awesome screencast!
-
Inappropriate?Update: mystery #1 resolved. Mini did not load on the scoble article because that article has mail/ in its url and we were blacklisting that url to try to avoid loading feedly on gmail. will change the gmail detection rule to make it more targeted. Looking at the TechCrunch/TechCrunchIT case.
-
Inappropriate?Update: bug#2 is a little harder to fix because the article is really published on techcrunch it which advertises a different feedURL. So from the perspective of feedly, when you are on TechcrunchIT, we think that you do not subscribe to that feed and we do not try to perform a match. I will talk to the rest of the team tomorrow but I do not think that there is an easy fix to this problem.
Problem #1 has been fixed and will be included in the 1.2.223 patch we will push out later this evening.
Thanks again for your help! -
Inappropriate?1.2.223 is out you should get patched automatically next time you restart firefox.

this solves the problem
-
Inappropriate?I understand that this may not be an easy fix - but I also imagine that there may be many feeds that aggregate posts from multiple feeds/sources - so it would be great if the Feedly toolbar knew how to handle those cases.
Hope your code gurus can come up with a solution!
I’m hopeful.
