How Do I Stop This Cascade of New Browser Windows?
Hi. I created a problem on my Flock browser and am unable to fix it.
I was visiting a web page and clicked on a link that was not a link to a new web page but a "mailto:" link with an email address. I do not use outlook or any of those, and a window appeared asking what program I would like to use to open the link. Not noticing it was just an email address, I clicked "flock.exe".
After that, it opened ANOTHER window asking the same question. Still not noticing it was an email address and wondering why the web page wouldn't open, I ticked the box that said, "Always use this program to open this kind of link" (paraphrasing). Well...
That started a cascade of new flock browser windows that kept opening until there were hundreds open and more coming, and I had to shut down flock to stop it. When I click on the "Share this Link Via Email" button, it does the same thing now.
The way to fix it would be to untick the box that says "Always use this program..." but it opens and closes and cascades into all those new windows, that I am unable to untick it.
PLEASE help me fix this. I can't find any other option windows that can change it back.
Also, if there is a way to have my gmail open when I click on an email (mailto:) link, please tell me how to do that.
Thanks so much...

Inappropriate?Hi Karen,
Sorry to hear this happened! First of all, which Windows are you using?
Regardless of the version, find your list of system defaults in your windows explorer.
In XP: Windows Explorer >> Tools >> Folder Options >> Filetypes
In Vista: Start Menu >> Defaults >> Set Default Program >> Flock >> Choose defaults for this program
In both circumstances, find the type of link/file in the lists, and remove Flock as the default application. That should remedy the issue.
Thanks, and hope this helps!
~Cam -
Inappropriate? Thanks for responding. I have Windows XP Pro Version 5.1.
Okay... not sure how to do this... I got to the Filetypes window. I look at the ones that have Flock as the default, and it is not clear which one is the one I need. There are:
HTM
HTML
SHTML
XHT
XHTML
and one that says (NONE)
When you highlight one, it says below the list "Opens With: Flock" with a button that says, "CHANGE". I push "change" and a new window pops up. In that window it says that FLOCK is the recommended one and there is a tick box at the bottom that says "always use the selected program to open this kind of program".
I can untick that box, then push "OK", and the window closes. But when you open the window again, the box is ticked again. It won't stay unticked. I look through the list and don't see another appropriate program to choose in it's place. I use online email. Not Outlook or other program.
1) What program should I choose instead of Flock?
or
2) How do I just not have ANY default program... without the box re-ticking itself?
Also...
3) Which filetype from the list above applies to my problem??
Thanks so much!
Karen
I’m a little frustrated.
-
Inappropriate?Hmm, I realize I may have jumped the gun a bit for solutions.
To make gmail open when you click on a mailto link, please log in to Gmail and then select "Remember account" when it appears. If you've already signed in, please check the Gmail account in the Accounts and Services sidebar. If it has the option to Remember Account, select it and then try it out. Does this solve the issue?
Thanks,
~Cam -
Inappropriate? My gmail account has always been "remembered" by Flock, but it has never opened up gmail when I click on a mailto: link. Perhaps it is because I have two gmail accounts and one yahoo account remembered and it doesn't know which to use?
So, I think we need to find a way to untick the "always use flock" box, and then hopefully begin to have gmail open in a new window when I click those links. Is that really possible? It never happened before.

Inappropriate?Karen,
Alright, to confirm you are in 2.5.2, yes? If not, please go to Flock.com and install it.
If you are, try forgetting all of your webmail accounts and then re-configuring them all. It *is* possible to have email links open in Gmail. However, it will open in whichever webmail service you have currently set to default. You can set them to default via the Webmail Flyout.
You can also try deleting your cookies. To do this, go to Tools >>Options >> Privacy >> Cookies >> Delete Cookies. Note that this will remove all saved passwords in Flock. Conversely, you could manually go through the long list of cookies and delete all of the webmail ones manually.
Finally, go to Tools >> Options >> Advanced >> Sharing, and make sure that "Use Primary Webmail Account" is selected.
Hope this helps!
~Cam -
Inappropriate?Cam,
Yes, I have been using 2.5.2.
Okay... I did forget all my webmails, re-configured just one of the gmail accounts, deleted ALL my cookies, and set it to Use my Primary Webmail Account.
And yet, when I click on a mailto link, I STILL get the cascading opening of a bazillion windows. I wish I could just slow it down, because then I could SEE the window with the ticked box, and untick it, but it spins by too fast.
One thing... when I "forgot" the webmail accounts, and then I logged back into my gmail the first time, I did NOT get the question that says, "Would you like Flock to remember this account?" It just reappeared in the Accounts sidebar with a green light. It HAD disappeared completely and came back again as soon as I logged in. Perhaps there is a way to forget it MORE??
So, I still have cascading new windows when I click mailto: links and when I click the "Share this link via email".
Any other ideas? Thanks for sticking with me on this.
-Karen-
I’m disappointed.
-
Inappropriate?If this info helps...
I was browsing around other people's questions and found one that was similar but not the same as mine. The adviser asked if the person had the same problem with the webmail flyout that says "Share current webpage"?
I tried that to see if it cascades windows for me and it does NOT! It opens gmail, and puts the webpage in the message.
Perhaps this is because it's not dealing with putting an email address into anything, but at least the webmail is opening in some places. I just still seem to have flock.exe as the default for when I click on a mailto: link.
So... by baby steps, it's a little better...
Karen -
Inappropriate?I FIXED IT!!
I FIXED IT!!!!! WHOOO-HOOO!!
...but I still need a little help.
Okay... I was doing something else entirely when up pops the window that asked what to open a program with, the kind I accidentally ticked the box in.
It wasn't for a mailto link, but I saw that the window was called a "Choose Helper Application" and so I googled that, and found my way to a Firefox Bugs page where they were explaining that it is an old bug with no fix.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug...
But then I found a Mozilla site with an explanation of how to fix a similar problem! Here is the page:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_...
Scroll down to the very middle where it says, "File handling in Firefox 3 and SeaMonkey 2". I followed the steps shown in the image there (for changing mailto, instead of the Adobe Acrobat shown in it's example), and my cascading windows are GONE when I click a mailto: link!!
Okay... I still need some help, though.
The good news is, the cascading windows are gone, the bad news is, there are no options besides flock.exe in my "Choose Helper Application" window when I click a mailto: link. There used to be choices there. There IS a browse (for applications) button there, but I don't know where to point the browser to make it work.
And gmail does not open up with I click one of the links, either. When I click the "share this link via email" button, the "Choose Helper Application" window appears then, too. Also empty of choices.
Progress...
I’m feeling a bit better...
-
Inappropriate?Oh... and when I click "Share this webpage" in what you call the "webmail flyout", it DOES open gmail still. Hmmm...
-
Inappropriate?Karen,
I'm slightly confused, so if I understand it correctly, this is what you're currently seeing:
a) your Gmail account is now properly configured in Flock
b) when sharing a webpage from the webmail flyout or clicking on the "Share this link via email" by the URL bar, your configured Gmail account is used
but c) clicking on a "mailto:" link on *any* webpage (such as emails on this page) would bring you the "Choose Helper Application" window.
Could you please confirm the above?
If so, I wonder if you're rather seeing a Windows setting issue instead. Could you please go to your Control Panel, choose "Internet Options", select the "Programs" tab, and under the "Internet Programs" section, what does the drop down menu list for "E-mail"?
Thanks,
Sophie -
Inappropriate?Hi Sophie,
a) your Gmail account is now properly configured in Flock
answer: Not sure what "properly configured" means.
My gmail account was always "remembered by flock" and appeared in the left column of accounts. We did "forget it" and "remember it" again as an attempted fix to the cascading windows (which is no longer a problem). Flock NEVER went to a gmail "compose" page when I clicked on anything, but now it DOES when I click on the "share this webpage" in the flyout.
b) when sharing a webpage from the webmail flyout or clicking on the "Share this link via email" by the URL bar, your configured Gmail account is used
answer: Yes and No.
webmail flyout? Yes.
Button on the URL bar? No. It NOW brings up a "Launch Application" window (you know it is no longer the "Choose Helper Application" although they look very similar) and my only choice in that window is to choose flock or browse for another. None others are offered. It also says "Internet Shortcut Shell Extension DLL" now near the top of that window. It looks like a subtitle in the window.
but c) clicking on a "mailto:" link on *any* webpage (such as emails on this page) would bring you the "Choose Helper Application" window.
Yes. It DID go to the Choose Helper Application. I chose "flock.exe" and ticked the little box that says "always use this program" which resulted in the cascading windows that I originally wrote to you about.
I did the fix I found online mentioned in my prior note, and now the cascading new windows are gone, but I noticed this morning that I instead get a "Launch Application" window. It's the same window I get when I push the "Share Link" button on the URL bar.
>>>Could you please go to your Control Panel, choose "Internet Options", select the "Programs" tab, and under the "Internet Programs" section, what does the drop down menu list for "E-mail"?
It is actually blank. It offers two choices:
Outlook Express or Windows Live Hotmail.
Thanks for your help,
Karen

Inappropriate?Karen,
Thank you for all the clarification! Let's try the following.
Let's first select Outlook Express to be your default external email program on your computer:
1) go to Control Panel | "Internet Options"| "Programs" tab, and under the "Internet Programs" section, look for the "E-mail" option. Choose Outlook Express, and click on "OK".
Let's back-up your current Flock's content:
2) back-up your RSS and bookmarks: http://flock.com/faq/show/64#q_86757 . If you don't have any RSS or bookmarks, you may skip to the next step.
Let's now start Flock with a clean install and clean profile. To do so:
3) close Flock
4) locate your current Flock profile (http://flock.com/faq/show/64#q_387)
5) go to C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\
6) rename the "Flock" folder to "FlockBackUp"
7) go to Control Panel, Add\Remove Programs, and uninstall Flock. When asked, choose not to keep your current profile.
8) download and re-install Flock 2.5.2 from www.flock.com
9) start Flock
10) go to gmail.com and login. When asked, select the "Remember Account" button in the message bar.
Let's now verify if your issue has been resolved:
11) go to any website (such as getsatisfaction.com/flock) and
a) share the current web page from the webmail flyout
b) share the link via email (it's the icon by the URL bar)
c) go to this page and click on any email address
12) let us know if all (a), (b), and (c) scenarios are now using your Gmail account?
Thanks for your patience,
Sophie

Inappropriate?Sophie,
Yes! All three scenarios now work! I have never, even back using Internet Explorer, ever been able to click on an email and have it come up in a compose window (it always wanted to use Outlook or something). What a pleasure! Thanks for sticking with me. It was worth it to have made the "cascading new windows" mistake just to get that working as well.
Could you do me one more favor? I am not sure how to get my RSS feeds and my favorites back into their folders. Could you walk me through it? Your step-by-steps are perfect.
Thanks, too, to Cam for getting me half way there.
Karen
I’m Thankful and Happy!
-
Inappropriate? To get your RSS feeds and favorites back, try the following (based on the steps to export this information):
Feeds:
1. Open the Feeds sidebar
2. Click "Feed Options"
3. Click "Import feeds"
4. Click Browse and find the file you saved
Favorites:
1. Open the Favorites menu
2. Click "Organize Favorites"
3. Open the "Import and Backup" menu
4. Choose "Import HTML"
5. Choose to import from a file
6. Find the file you saved
Success? -
Inappropriate?Yes! Great!
When downloading the backup files, I was told to do those two, but I saw an option to backup a .json file (Favories>Organize Favorites>Import and Backup>Backup). I hadn't been instructed to do it, but did anyway, just in case. Is this at all important? How does it differ from the Favorites backup document.
One last thing...
Before the reload, I had a Digg Button, up there on the URL bar, right beside the "Share this link via email" button. If you clicked on it, it would show you the 5 biggest links currently on Digg. I can't for the life of me find where I got this button months ago. And I used it a lot. Any ideas?
Thanks, Chris.
This forum rocks.

Inappropriate?A snapshot is kept in .json form for roughly the last five days you used it. If your bookmarks go screwy, you can restore your bookmarks from one of these. It'd be painful to have to manually back up your bookmarks every day in case of errors. The Import and Backup>Backup functionality solves this for some situations. To restore your bookmarks from the .json file you'd go Favorites>Organize Favorites>Import and Backup>Backup and either choose a previous day or point it to a backup up one.
If you manually backed your bookmarks up, you are all good.
Re: Digg guy. If he's not appearing, right click somewhere on the browser (eg on the main menu) and choose Customize. The Digg guy might be in this window. Drag him to the interface to make him appear. You can also click "Restore Default Set" and this might remove any added toolbars (Google toolbar, Yahoo toolbar, etc) and restore the default buttons, including the Digg guy.
Rock on!

Inappropriate?I am pretty happy with how everything is working now. But I have one odd problem where Flickr now will not stay logged in.
I put my password in, ask it to keep me logged in for two weeks. It all works fine and I am logged in in the sidebar. Then I shut down Flock, come back later, bring up a new browser window, and I am logged out of Flickr. When I bring up the page, it says "Configure your Flickr account to enjoy all the benefits!"
So I move through the process again.
It never actually asks me to REMEMBER the account. That window never comes.
I did find a discussion about this issue here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/flock/topi...
...but they seem to be going round and round this problem for months. Mine started right after reinstalling flock. Could that be a clue?
Should I close this thread and start a new one with this issue, or is this the same issue unresolved because it started a new error?
Thanks, guys.
Karen

Karen,
I'm happy to read that your email issues have now been resolved.
Regarding the issue with Flickr, this is a known bug reported here:
https://bugzilla.flock.com/show_bug.c...
We apologize for the inconvenience...
Should you have any question about this Flickr issue or should you have any other non-cascading new browser windows, I'd strongly suggest to start a new thread to avoid confusion.
Thank you!
