Foursquare Teams!
The idea of Foursquare teams should allow individuals to team up with other places (perhaps up to groupings of 4). Another weekly ladder would be created specifically for teams (as to keep separate from individual scores). Team names, team avatars - maybe even the potential to be a part of up to 3 teams at a time. I think this would increase involvement/engagement in the service and open up new doors for usage. Imagine teams that seek to own all the Starbucks or 7-Elevens in a given city or teams that want to exclusively own an entire block.

Inappropriate? You pick who is on your team or where you check-in determines what team you are on? if you are picking teams, I'm against it bc ur essentially creating cliques of friends that check-in together
-
I'd opt for picking who is on your team. IMO, I think to avoid creating cliques of friends that check-in together (which is already done anyway, but since there's no teams there's currently no incentive) - I think team members checking into the same spots would/should count as a double check-in (for the team & not individual) in which no pts are rewarded. How's that sound? -
Okay. I like the idea. No more than 4 to a team is fair. So the initial check-in for a team would give the team points and a check-in, but the individuals get no points and no check-in. For going back to a venue, the team gets a check-in and no points and the individuals again would get nothing? -
I think team pts & individual pts should be treated separately. So, say you & I are on a team. We go to a place and check-in, our team gets 1pt - us as individuals each get 1pt. The rankings/leaderboards would have to look something like this:
Singles
Friends / All of "City"
(^ Currently exists)
Teams
Friends (teams your friends happen to be in even if just one member) / All of "City"
So, for all intents & purposes the original game (singles/individuals) still exists. Teams would just be added for more fun. All the same rules apply and the scoring is completely separate. -
Inappropriate?i think there should be no limit of individuals in a group, this could enable more competition
-
I think that would just cause chaos and ultimately be based on the amount of people in the group as opposed to their selection on when/where to check in. So, if I could somehow gather a huge chunk of the foursquare players in my city onto my team (with no member cap) then ultimately my team would dominate each and every week no contest. Unfair. -
Inappropriate?i disagree, i think this would promote more group gathering in order to boost points. Perhaps a group limit of 10 would be enough to include a good amount of people in your group but not encounter the chaotic situation which you describe.
Additionally, I think it would be interesting to include some sort of multiplier when multiple people in a team check in at the same place in a short amount of time. I think this would definitely boost people's desire to congregate and increase engagement. -
Well, to counter - check out some of haveboard & saveasnew's responses above and below.
Their rationale with something like that would be:
- discouraging meeting new people / going different places
- creates cliques / segmentation
I do get/somewhat like the idea of the pt multiplier but additionally - I must insist that the original game as-is should be retained and team scoring be separate. -
i def agree that they should be separate, otherwise team players would get screwed as individuals -
Inappropriate?I do not think this is a good idea at all. It promotes cliques which reminds me of High School. Maybe a separate game/service built off of foursquare using the API would be cool, but intergrating this directly into foursquare would bum me out.
I’m not into this

always thinking like me RE: cliques
foursquare / twitter police squad sounds like a better idea :) -
yea, man. Didn't really want to chime in here but sent Mikey a DM and then I realized this convo was picking up. People are already confused enough about foursquare to add another layer to it. -
Cliques or camaraderie?
I think with enough gameplay balance we could avoid the system from getting too cliquey. I mean, think about it - the game as it stands needs some balancing. People who've been playing for a while are gimped in terms of earning points - new users get 5pts for every venue + another 5pts for adding new venues (even if dupes!). But at any rate, gameplay (& accruing points) balancing is a separate discussion.
foursquare police = honestly a good idea, I think Superusers need more control
Agreed with adding another layer of complexity, maybe this is an idea best reserved for when more people actually "get it." -
Foursquare already encourages me to get out and meet up with new people. Teams would make people less likely to meet up with people they normally don't hang out with for the sake of team points. -
agreed. i go out of my way to go to new places for points and it gets me to try new things. my different group of friends tend to meet up at the same places already and most of them aren't on foursquare either.
foursquare police i can get behind, but honestly the superusers they put into place are working. the merge venue thing is phenomenal! -
Inappropriate?True but not if checking in with your team won't give you any additional pts, then there's no incentive to roll as a team all the time if it only takes one of you to check-in & earn pts (for the entire team). If anything, it then promotes being a team but acting independently - going to different venues.
