Non US cities - when will they be added??
When will other cities be added?? Ones NOT in the US. I.e. Manchester, UK would be great. What would be involved in adding new cities?

Hey all - me again.
So, new cities is another top priority for us. I'd really like to roll out Canada and London ASAP, but we need to find a solid data provider (finding someone with good data for eat + drink + art/culture/parks/etc is harder than you would think). Same problem is preventing us from rolling out US cities (and other international cities).
The good news: This is *my* big ticket item and something. And when we fix this once, we pretty much fix it everywhere. :)
(A lot of people suggested we just use the Yelp / Google / Yahoo APIs, though this is tricky cause of all the "places you've been in the past" queries we do. For these queries, we need to keep a copy our of venue data local, which is something we can't do with these APIs)
The three of us (btw, foursquare = 3 people :) have been talking about letting users roll their own cities... "Sure, we'll add St. Louis, you just fill in all the data!" which would technically work, but its a crappy user experience. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that we're on this and thinking about it.

Inappropriate?I'd happily get a few local people together to give you all the details for Birmingham, UK
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Any chance of letting users add Cities in the same way locations are added?
I can think of several very active usergroups (@PTUB for example) which would love to play (myself included!) without having to fly all the way to the US :)
I’m hopeful
-
Yups that would be even better, let people add cities the way they add veneus. So new cities can be added automatically when there is a demand for it, would be cool what downtempo says also. That one can see what is happening in your home city while you are away in a different city. -

I agree. I'm hoping for Vancouver. -
Inappropriate?Lima, Peru ... the food capital in a country of people obsessed with good food.
-
Inappropriate?Wow - look at this thread! So the trick here is figuring out a way for people to roll their own cities.. working on it :)
-
Inappropriate?Yeah that would be even cooler, if your city is not yet in the system add it yourself just like adding venues ^_^ Hooray for foursquare !
-
Inappropriate? The "add a new city " feature would be great. If you're concerned about duplicates etc. you can always first open that to a couple of trusted users.
BTW I'll be spending a week in Mexico City and then in Paris. Would love to start pinging places in the system!
I’m amused

If you're willing to use data under a cc-by-sa license, you might be able to make use of data from the OpenStreetMap project:
http://www.openstreetmap.org
It won't be comprehensive for all areas, but it might at least serve as a starting point. (Maybe you could even contribute back data from Foursquare users adding their own venues!) -
Not sure what the serious issue is -- you already offer some trust to people for creating locations in other cities, and all we need is a "Bag" called "London" or a bag called "Toronto" to put them in (BTW: Canada has a number of cities, unless you are thinking of adding the whole country as a city)
The rocket-science / lots-of-effort part is where? I can't quite see it. Can you (seriously) expand on that? -
I can understand that launching a new city without many locations is going to suck, how about you create them so that the community can start adding places, then when there's enough it can launch properly? -
It's like you can read our mind! We're going to try an experiment with users populating a city with new data next week. (@thedeplorableword, what city did you have in mind?) -
I had my city (Birmingham, UK ) in mind but I think you should go for London because that will get a lot more people in the UK excited about FourSquare, which will equal more players, which will be good for everyone :) -
Calgary, Alberta, Canada please! -
Inappropriate?Hmmm. Crowdsourcing cities would probably not work too well, like you say, but maybe you could crowdsource looking for data providers? I, for instance, have a pretty good idea of a bunch of companies that you could call for sweden data.
-
Inappropriate?Perhaps it's worth speaking to the guys at Dopplr, they have a growing list of places to eat, stay and explore. Plus it's international and covers all major worldwide cities.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Dennis, sounds good!! Keep us updated!
-
Inappropriate?Hey Dennis. I'm Ash Ponders, I work for atebits (tweetie) and love Foursquare.
I travel a lot, but will be spending a ton of time in Madrid soon. I could record a list of locations for you. It'll be like foursquare but instead of checking in, I'd add things to an XML file. And instead of getting badges, I'd get weird stares.
Would this be serviceable as a 'roll your own' database that you could eventually use to add Madrid? -
I love this comment. "weird stares" ftw! :-) -
Inappropriate?Dear Foursquare - any chance you can set up a poll of people who are interested in Foursquare in other cities, so they can at least 'sign up' and you can see where the most interested cities are?

Inappropriate?Taipei, Taiwan would be a very fun place to start - so much night life, so many phones... What can we do to get things going?
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate? In Manchester, UK, one of your competitors without geolocative restrictions has really taken off it the past month. As users we've added all the locations ourselves.
Sorry if I seem a little blunt (I really want to play Foursquare) but I don't see why you can't just define cities' rough boundaries as they're requested (not a lot of work to discover that using freely available tools) and then let us define all locations. Crowdsourcing hasn't hurt your main competitor. *Please* open up to Manchester soon.
I’m keen
-
Inappropriate?Hmm.. interesting. We find that with aggressive crowdsourcing the data can get a little muddy (dups, etc). I'll be sure to add Manchester in the next round tho!
Hold on! :)
-d -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the reply Dennis. There have been a couple of dups here but generally if a spot already exists people will check in at it. Here in Manchester/Madchester we're clearly keen geolocative gamers!
I’m encouraged
-
Inappropriate?Ah okay, thanks for the heads up! How many users / how many spots? Ah, we should have nailed the *everywhere* thing sooner, but we're getting there!
-d -
In just 3 weeks we've got over 20 active users and well over 50 spots. Might not sound that much compared to some of your locations, but bear in mind Foursquare's higher profile and it should be a big hit here. -
Inappropriate?I'm at Pontevedra, Spain
-
Inappropriate?Oh well if Manchester is being added in the next round, could we please get Birmingham in the UK as well? I can provide a list of places if that's helpful? :)
I’m excited
-
Thank you, my question is : could we please get Pontevedra in Spain as well? -
Inappropriate?Ah, lemme see what I can sneak into the next round. Just FYI we're a few weeks away from doing *everywhere* but I'd really love to drop some of these bigger UK cities pre-populated with data.
ps: make sure you're on the list to learn when we launch cities: http://foursquare.com/cities -
Ah, you're breaking my heart. Madrid is a huge international city. iPhones and other lesser smart phones predominate. The city closes at 5am. The night life here is incomparably superior to anywhere else. -
Inappropriate?fully concur - madrid is such a great nightlife spot - drinks at 8, dinner at 11, and then bars bars bars... but it's coming - hang tight a couple more weeks ;-)
-
By then my mayorships in my old town will be all gone and I will have nothing at all to be proud of. -
Inappropriate?madrid = on the list. like soon. sssh :)

Inappropriate?I would love to add another ping for Brisbane AUS. We have a pretty good wifi system on the City Cat catamarans that run through the city :-). Great potential here!
-
Inappropriate?VIENNA (Austria)!!
Capital and melting pot of the country,
highly frequented webscene,
large and numerous wi-fi areas,
high iPhone density (business, fashion, music, universities!!)
You totally have to get foursquare spread here.
Thank you, Miriam -
Inappropriate?please don't forget to cover as many capitals as possible.
especially those would profit who frequently jet from city to city: successfully finding last minute people/business partners/friends.
a flexible net through foursquare - still a dream? -
Inappropriate?Oh crap, Vienna is not in this round (tho a lot of other cities are!) Lemme see if we can fix that for next-next round okay?
-
2 thumbs up - that's something ;) -
Inappropriate?Hi Dennis, I know I've already alluded to this above, but I'm very happy to spend a few hours around Manchester, UK adding locations if you'd like me to. I promise to keep quiet about it. http://foursquare.com/user/-69886
-
Inappropriate?Dennis / FS guys... if you're interested in Australia... give me a shout and we can put you in touch with the right person at my247, who provides Australia-wide (downloadable format) POI data to Google and others for Aussies.
-
I can also add that I am willing to do work for Brisbane Australia. I have a small group at the University of Queensland that is playing with mobile apps. It is a bit of chicken and egg issue but I will do my best to help support a community (and load/verify data) in Bris. -
Inappropriate?Would be nice if Scandinavia could be added. (Denmark, Sweden, Norway etc..)
-
Inappropriate?Dennis, on behalf on the crew behind http://mitkbh.dk we can provide you with info on bars, restaurants, clubs and cafés in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Inappropriate?I for one am impatiently waiting for Oslo to come up as a possibility :) Tried out Foursquare for a week in October in San Francisco, which was really impressive, both for finding local places for eating and concerts and so on, and for keeping track of the other IT conference attendees I traveled with (that is; for seeing which conference venues they were at).
Looks like this app/game has lots of potential. -
Inappropriate?Oslo isn't in this round, but we'll be doing the "foursquare everywhere" thing soon enough so stay tuned!
http://foursquare.com/cities -
So, it will be more or less like Gowalla then? -
In only the way that we won't restrict to big cities. We did the "city" thing so we could scale - helps us control number of users, number of checkins, number of customer support requests. Now that we're ready to get a little bigger, removing the city restriction will help spread foursquare much further. -
I'm living in Linköping, one of the bigger cities in Sweden. When can I expect Foursquare to allow checkins here? -
There are more of us that needs adding Oslo to use your service. Norwegians are tech savvy and love new apps for our iphone. Here is an illustration that shows norwegian users of social media: http://www.halogen.no/academy/underso.... -

Inappropriate?Hey I would gladly go through all of the setup information necessary, even if it is a "lousy user experience" in order to get Paris France on the system.
I think we're one of the biggest tourist sites in the world and it would be great if people could use your service in our great city.
Let me know... -
Inappropriate?pls add major cities in Australia
Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Tasmania (ok, technically not a city but a small island), Adelaide, Cairns, Darwin, Alice Springs, Perth -
Inappropriate?just out of curiousity - Is there a (or where is the) list of cities that are scheduled to be added? Are there any things that individuals can do to make a city more attractive (Brisbane). Is it worth lobbying my local friends to engage?
http://foursquare.com/user/-3810 -
Inappropriate?Hey all - there's real science behind city rollout... we basically look at the list of requested cities, look for clumps of requests and then turn them of:
http://foursquare.com/cities
That being said, we got a big round of European cities coming out today (!! - Nov 4) and then some "Worldwide" cities after that.
We're working towards a "foursquare everywhere" model - so you'll just be able to play wherever you happen to be... "featured city" or random suburb. Hoping to have this out in the next few weeks.
Lemme know if you have any other Q's! -
Inappropriate?Thank you soooo much for adding Paris in the latest batch of international cities.
I will do my best to get help to fill it up as soon as possible.
Bienvenue !
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?(A lot of people suggested we just use the Yelp / Google / Yahoo APIs, though this is tricky cause of all the "places you've been in the past" queries we do. For these queries, we need to keep a copy our of venue data local, which is something we can't do with these APIs)
... Brightkite and other like-services use Google Maps API and correctly store "places you've been in the past" data.. not sure why you guys couldn't.
I’m frustrated
-
It's one thing to store a history of places, but to dynamically generate lists of places you've been / you're friends have been / popular with other users *without* storing venue data on our side (which would violate google copyright) it's too slow to work.
That's partly why the API we're building has this data build into it - you'll be able to pull back "what's nearby" queries as well as "what's nearby ordered by popularity with my friends / the community / people like me" etc. It's a much needed improvement for everyone in this space. -
Inappropriate? Is it going to be available in Mexico City soon?
Thanks! -

Inappropriate?Dennis. will you have a way to split locations?
If you add Oakland, then lots of San Francisco locations in the East Bay will move over, unless you drop the unique city structure when you can check in from anywhere
I’m just asking
-
It looks like this is happening already. When Hamburg split off from Berlin, all the places (in Hamburg) I'd added in the Berlin location were already moved over. -

Inappropriate?I would love to know the process that goes into adding a new city. I was very impressed with all the venues that were pre-loaded when Brisbane came online. Was that done by enthusiasts like me who added them while 'pretending' to be in another city? Or is this done by FourSquare staff? If it is foursquare staff I can understand why you need to roll out new cities judiciously.
-

Inappropriate? You should most definitely have Winnipeg on the map.
It's the culture capital of North America. -
we like to think so - the worlds best folk festival, a great jazz festival, lots of live theatre, amazingly diverse music scene and superb art galleries - not to mention the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Folklorama, and dozens of other festivals and cultural celebrations..... all in the heart of the continent -
I totally agree. Winnipeg has an extremely rich culture, lots of delicious places for food, amazing music scene, vibrant yoga and fitness community... It is a pretty fab place! -

PS Why not having an Other--->Please specify fields so that missing cities can be automatically added? -
Inappropriate?Hey guys,
Love the app so far, looks pretty cool!
Just putting in a request for you guys to add York and Leeds to the project, both in the U.K.
Both have a very lively scene going on, both nightlife and daytime venues.
There's already quite a few venues added in both cities, but they're all linked to London which makes no sense.
I’m hopeful!
