Google Chrome Support for Foxmarks
With the release of Google's Chrome browser today, would you consider writing a version of Foxmarks for it when they release the plug-in API?

No news worth reporting; Google's getting the basics of what we need for synchronizing bookmark data, but so far we're missing a few vital elements for the full Xmarks experience (such as local storage), and Google hasn't completely stabilized the extension interface that we're using, so things stop working at the drop of a hat.
So, hold onto your hats--we'll keep you posted. Thanks for all the enthusiasm!

We just released an alpha version of Xmarks for Chrome! You can read our Get Satisfaction post and our blog post about it.
You can also head on over to our new Xmarks for Chrome product page and let us know what you think!

Inappropriate?haven't they canned their "Google Browser Sync"? Ideal if Foxmarks could work with this.
I’m hoping...
-
Inappropriate?Google Browser Sync project has stopped for Google. Dunno if they are planning to ressurect it..

Inappropriate?Indeed, having a feature/extension that is on a par with FF's Foxmarks might be the key reason for me to switch from FF to Chrome.
I’m anxious!

Inappropriate?I'm waiting for foxmarks for Chrome, so that I can start testing Chrome.
Before I have full foxmarks support in Chrome, there is no point in testing Chrome.
I’m waiting
-
You could just import the bookmarks from firefox when you install Chrome. It worked for me :) -
Inappropriate?Alex, that feature certainly works just fine, it worked for me. However, what we're looking for is the feature that Foxmarks provides: continuous synchronization of your bookmarks with Foxmarks' server, and not just one-time imports/exports.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?I thought about that just after posting my reply. You're right, it would be much better if you'd have the full functionality.
-
Inappropriate?Yes foxmark for chrome ! it would be a great thing because sadly i'm abandoned foxmark nom, i've switched for the evil google ;-)
-
Inappropriate?Isn't chrome just another hype which will be gone after few weeks?
I tryied chrome, but Firefox is still miles ahead...
But I understand that people use it for running their google apps.

Inappropriate?I don't think so... It's more about a feeling and small things out of the box
-
Inappropriate?@v.ovcacik: no, I don’t think Chrome is another hype. It’s much faster (and lighter on memory) than most other browsers. Besides, Google has a lot to gain by encouraging more competition in the browser world, and it’s got the resources to keep improving their browser. If your version 0.2 is this good, then I’m sold.
That said, until a) it has my favourite extensions built in or b) supports writing extensions, I’m keeping FF as main browser. But for webapps, Chrome has already supplanted Prism, and it’s also the browser I use for a quick visit to some specific site.
I’m curious as to what will happen
-
Inappropriate?@Martijn: Yeah, it was really fast browsing. But how fast would be firefox without all installed add-ons, or without all the features which are missing in Chrome?
What else in v0.2 gets so much enthusiasm than a hype :-) No I'm just kidding. But the question for me is: Where will be Firefox when Chrome finally gets to 1.0?
I’m trusty to Firefox
-
Well, I’ve compared Firefox 3 with a minimal set of extensions (just AdBlock and ProfileSwitcher), IE 8 beta 2, also with as little add-ons as possible, Opera 9.50 fresh install, and Chrome 0.2; and Chrome was still the first one I could actually use. It also loads (especially Javascript-heavy) pages faster than the other three. Opera does beat it on memory usage.
That said, I’ve had to install Privoxy to approximate AdBlock, and I sorely miss GreaseMonkey when Chroming... Which is why I only use it for quickies. :-)
As for Firefox: I wonder... Seeing how far it’s come these past few years, there’s a lot of beauty ahead in that direction as well, IMHO. -
Exactly, there is lot of beauty, why should I make step back with Chrome than? I'm afraid Chrome won't be quick forever, "extensibility is to the prejudice of performance". Chrome will have hard time to get me, but I don't want take you your opinion. -
Inappropriate?Any updates on getting a foxmarks sync addon for Chrome?
-
Google hasn't yet implemented an extension framework for Chrome, but we'll be sure to post here just as soon as we have an update. Thanks for your interest! -
Inappropriate?I would greatly wanna see support for google chrome. I have started to transfer from firefox. FF is a great browser. But i like chrome so much more.
I’m Happy !
-
Inappropriate? This would really help me with multibrowser use needs. I hope you can reuse the Google open sourced code for your syncing.
I’m feeling lucky
-
Inappropriate? The only reason I am not switching to Chrome is the lack of Foxmarks. It is the most useful add-on ever. Next to Dictionaries. :)
-
Inappropriate? If you guys have nothing to add to the question, please just click "I have this question too", that way everyone in the thread won't have to get a notice despite the fact that you have nothing useful to say, and the bigger the thread becomes the bigger the chance of it being noticed when/if a foxmarks addon comes out for chrome.
-
Inappropriate?but from what I've read on the chrome pages I think foxmarks is best of splitting bookmark and password sync (if chrome will even keep passwords let alone allow extensions to access them) as I believe some users won't allow a bookmarks syncer to have even the potential to access their passwords
though maybe you can have it as a add-on which needs the foxmarks extension before it can be installed (again if chrome will allow communication between extensions which I believe it will) -
Inappropriate?making it possible wouldn't be much hassle even for an average programmer and even without google chrome's plugins api, as long as there was an external app which processed chrome's profile files related to bookmarks, etc and sent it to (fo)xmarks server and vice versa using it's api,
unfortunately i'm not even a beginner as a programmer :(
but i'm sure there's a lot of good ones out there with a slice of good will:)
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate? Is it just me who's a more than a little frustrated because this is been announced such a long time ago and we're waiting for such a long time?
Can we get an official answer on this?!?!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Still waiting... I want to switch to chrome and foxmarks is critical to that.
I’m tired of waiting
-
Inappropriate?Any news ?
-
Keep an eye on http://blog.xmarks.com/ for updates--we'll try to post something here as well, but the blog's really where the updates'll be. -
Inappropriate? Now Chrome has plugins and extensions framework:
http://www.osnews.com/story/21494/Chr...
I’m excited
-
Yep, but bookmark support is only partially implemented according to http://dev.chromium.org/developers/de... -
Inappropriate?Ye, hopefully, we will see xmarks on chrome soon ^.^
-
Inappropriate? On http://getsatisfaction.com/foxmarks/t... you commented that you are waiting for the bookmark API, seems it is available at http://dev.chromium.org/developers/de.... Now hopefully there will be a way to implement support for passwords as well.
-
Well, yeah, and up above I commented that the link specifically mentions that the API is only partially implemented so far. :) -
you could start the preliminary implementation already and wait for testing until full implementation of the API
I mean you already have the base for communication with server (as the xml_httprequest calls should be the same) and you'll only need to change the calls to the local bookmarks store -
Ratchet freak is right!!! go on his path, please let us know the status and possible help needed there are a lot of geeks that are interested on helping, foxmarks.chrome is really needed!!!!!!!!! -
Second that. I use lastpass.com, passwords are completely unnecessary. But bookmarks are essential! -
lastpass.com does not seem to use the browsers native password managers (beyond export), but introduces a separate manager. I don't like this approach, and I'd much rather have a synch tool that updates my browsers' native password managers. -
That's precisely the point of lastpass. It offers higher encryption and better security. It also offers password generation and secure storage of form fields.
Firefox, IE, Opera, Safari all store the form fields unencrypted. Passwords are fairly easy to decrypt in these browsers... it's insecure. -
Inappropriate?I use firefox and chrome on a mixture of computers, depending on my mood, if Foxmarks works across both browser I would be v.happy!
I doubt it will, this has been going on for months, meaning chrome will never be adopted by the millions of fox (X) marks users.
What was wrong with foxmarks anyway? :) -
Inappropriate?I too am anxiously awaiting Xmarks support for Chrome. Now that the browser works well in Win 7, I'm wanting to be able to make use of it more. Any chance we can get an update on this?
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate?MustardTiger: We'll always have a soft spot in our hearts for the original "Foxmarks" name, but it solidly tied us with Firefox in people's minds; now that we're expanding into IE, Safari, and Chrome, we felt the "Xmarks" name was a good compromise--consider it as the same name, just two keystrokes more efficient. :)
Chris: We don't have any solid information to provide yet, but we're getting closer. We'll definitely make sure to announce at http://blog.xmarks.com/ when we have an update, so stay tuned! -
Inappropriate?Adding a bookmarklet like those del.icio.us and google reader uses couldn't be that hard?
-
Inappropriate?Guys, I hope you will not be absolutely tied into Chrome, but make use of the Chromium source so that Xmarks will work with SRWare Iron as well... I have to say, the combination of Xmarks and Chrome/Iron makes me light headed with excitement. :)
I’m excited
-
Indeed I am more interested in SRWare Iron than Chrome, so any building on Chrome should be done at the Chromium level so that forks of Chrome can utilise these developments -
Inappropriate? So you trust a browser that has Google's auto update feature disabled more than you trust an up to date browser? They also sem to consider the removal of crash reporting an improvement..
Either way I suspect that this other browser is a very simple patch set on-top of Chrome, so it's likely the same plug-ins will work with both. -

Well, yes, I would never let any of my computers be updated automatically - I prefer to know what's happening. All i need to do is understand the plans for updating Iron and to click on the "Iron Updates" link regularly - just as i do with Firefox.
And Iron is an application built using the Chromium source code - it's not any kind of "patch set on-top of Chrome", it's an entirely separate app constructed similarly to Chrome - same basic components, but without the Google spyware. -
Are you sure it's a good idea to turn off Firefox updates too? And Windows update? Couldn't you very easily miss a zero day exploit patch like that? I'm not trying to argue here, just sounds like risky behaviour to me. I suspect we shouldn't be debating this in a feature request page, though... -
Inappropriate?Yes and please make it Bookmarks and Passwords please! Thank you +1
any news on progress?

At least we're getting feedback. Thanks. -
Yes! Thanks for the feedback, indeed! -
So Gears is an unacceptable platform for local storage? It's native in Chrome and provides an excellent local storage capability. -
Not sure about everyone else, but I could deal with a “Beta” version for Chrome that worked sporadically. Just say so up-front. -
thanks for the feedback... keep it up and we'll keep up our enthusiasm :) -
Inappropriate?YES! Please support Chrome - no Xmarks support is the only thing stopping me from switching permanently. I'm sick of Firefox's bloat but can't live without my bookmarks
-
Ditto. I would use Chrome as a primary browser if there were Foxmarks for it. I need to sync Safari and Chrome on Mac so that my mobile bookmarks are in sync. -
Inappropriate? In the mean time, just install the free version of www.goodsync.com on each PC, tell it to sync the bookmarks file with some FTP space that you have (settings/file locations can be seen in the attached image).
I've been using this across 5 PCs/Laptops reliably for a 9 months+ whilst I await Xmarks - now i'm able to be 100% Chrome and i'm in no rush for Google/Xmarks to get this done.
I'm sure it could be configured to work with history/cookies etc too.
Ben.
I’m confident you'll like this
-
Inappropriate?looking forward to xmarks on chrome
-
Inappropriate?I would use a beta right now - stable or not
-
Inappropriate?Have you seen that google is introducing its own synchronizing system in chrome ?
Wont it be a problem for xmarks to be developed for chrome ?
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?From Information Week article: (http://www.informationweek.com/news/i...):
James Joaquin, CEO of Xmarks, said that his company has been working closely with the Google Chrome team to introduce a version of Xmarks for Chrome later this summer. "Our key difference from built-in Chrome sync: Xmarks is the only bookmark sync solution that works across all major browsers including Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari," he said in an e-mail. "We offer maximum consumer choice, so our users can sync between browsers as easily as they sync between computers." -

Inappropriate?ALMOST a year and no xmarks (fox) chrome????????????
wow that should be Rocket Science..... =(
I’m very frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Wow, I love all the comments that people throw out complaining about how long it is taking and how "it shouldn't be very hard" and even insulting remarks added on to those about how "even an average programmer could do it, I'm sure", etc. If you think its so easy, why don't you write the extension yourself and start your own company to market it??
The guys at (fo)xmarks are doing everything that they can, I'm sure. For those of you who have never worked in a development environment between two parties, things can get very complex and take a very long time for communications to occur between the two parties, not to mention the fact that the Chrome API that the extension is being built off of is still only partially developed itself, only furthering the difficulty of completing the extension for Chrome any quicker than they currently are. If you really want someone to complain to, start getting on the guys at Google's case about the whole thing, that is where a difference can really be made that would speed along the process -- if Google completed a fully working implementation of the Chrome API.
Be thankful that the guys at (fo)xmarks have done all that they have for FireFox, IE, and Safari and that they are doing everything they can to get the extension done for Chrome that they can... give 'em a break and be glad that they have done so much for the community already!
I’m thankful
-
I second that. Well said, Brian. -

Inappropriate?Ok guys. I'm a bit fed up reading ignoramuses bitching here. So just to help here are some links to what I found to be as good as Chrome and Firefox put together. Also it allows the free use of an anti keylogger. (I was hacked and ripped off in ebay 2 months ago and wish I had this then, even though Paypal reimbursed me)
1) http://www.flock.com/
2) http://www.keyscrambler.com/
I was made up on discovering as it accepted all my favorite addons from Firefox as it is compatible with Firefox but unlike the V3.5 does not hang every 2 mins. The only thing is there is no themes as of yet so it is Vanilla and looks an acts exactly like Google Chrome and I for one will now stay with Flock as it is really what I want.
Hope this helps some of you too and to the whiners......Chill!
Extensions I have running on it are

-
How did you go about installing Firefox addons to Flock. I am really interested to try this out;) -
Inappropriate? When you go to the Flock site, amongst the info it says somewhere about being compatible with Firefox. Basically they only have 4 or 5 addons at the top when you press addons tab. But if you go to Firefox addons page and choose you addons there and it says install? Do so as you would Firefox and hey presto it installs into Flock and behaves exactly the same as Firefox does on a restart. You then just set up as normal ie: set Fox Clocks or whatever you have chosen.

Inappropriate?well, sounds good but today google is bringing bokmark sync too http://bit.ly/1uoe9e
I’m amused
-
Yeah but what's cool with Xmarks supports IE, Firefox, Safari and Chrome !
I use Safari on my Mac, Chrome on Windows, and Firefox on GNU/Linux ;) -
Inappropriate? It's cool to hear it's coming - but since Google Chrome have its own sync system, what about a server-to-server sync? That way you could have your Xmarks in Chrome without having to install anything. That would sound safer than having 2 independent sync system running locally (with risks of conflicts). Of course, that would only work if Google offers an API for their sync server...
-
Inappropriate? It's not just coming, it's here! Xmarks is now syncing my Chrome bookmarks and it's working flawlessly. I also enable the Google bookmark sync, but I believe that's only for bookmarks and Xmarks is doing (or will be doing) passwords as well.
If there were a server to server sync, you would lose control. You need to be able to enable/disable and to overwrite local or server copies.
Thanks Xmarks! -
Inappropriate?I've been using the Chrome Sync for a few weeks now, and I'm very happy with it (By that I mean the Xmarks Chrome sync).
-
Inappropriate?Plonka2000 and Brendan , how did you get Xmarks with Chrome? I cant find it. Does it also do Passwords?Thank you.

And sadly no, we don't support password sync yet. -
