Profile sync not working correctly
I've used FoxMarks for awhile, so I'm not new to this by any means. I upgraded my FoxMarks to Xmarks at home without a hitch. I switched everything to the "Home" profile. I then installed it at work (Mac OSX), and suddenly everything appeared on my work computer. I switched to the "Work" profile and edited items I didn't want to have at work.
Here's the problem...It deleted (rather "blanked") the bookmarks for random entries! It seems to be linked with the multiple profiles, but that's all I can figure out. The bookmark entry is there, but there's no data or URL. I can't delete it or change those that got "blanked" and some of those I don't know if I can get back!
Oh, and then I created a new bookmark at home ("Home" profile) last night, and it appeared on my work computer ("Work" profile) this morning.

Inappropriate? Here's an update...I upgraded to Xmarks on my laptop and all of the bookmarks synced perfectly. I then assigned it to the "Home" profile and *POOF* there go my bookmarks - but ONLY on my bookmark toolbar - and ONLY the bookmarks that are in folders on my bookmark toolbar.
I then reverted to *no* profile to try and get my bookmarks back, but no luck.
I need my bookmarks back NOW!!!! I do not have these particular bookmarks ANYWHERE ELSE.
When is the Xmarks staff going to answer this question? I posted the original problem TWO WEEKS ago, and didn't even get a complimentary reply.
I’m pissed off that Xmarks deleted my bookmarks!

Inappropriate?I just checked the links @ the my.xmarks.com site and all of the "blanked" bookmarks have the same link:
https://my.xmarks.com/?mode=profiles#
Where is the original link?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
If xMarks is out of "beta" then why is it deleting links?
I’m getting fed up with what USED TO BE a good add-on.

Inappropriate? And there's STILL NO UPDATE to this or help from an Xmarks rep... What's up with that?!?!
And now I'm getting "Error 3" and the only way to fix it is to create a new FF profile? That's not right! If Xmarks is going to corrupt FF profiles, then XMarks needs to be fixed not the FF profiles!
I’m Getting even more fed up

Inappropriate?Hi Mattit -- Sorry for the delay in responding; we've been working on a lot of projects and were short on humanpower, so we had to triage items affecting individuals versus those affecting all Xmarks users. I apologize it's taken us so long to respond to you as a result.
Looking over the report of your problem, the first thing that jumps out at me is that it doesn't look like you've tried restoring your bookmarks from the Xmarks Backup & Restore feature at https://my.xmarks.com/ under the "Tools" menu. Is that an option at all for you? If you were able to synchronize your bookmarks at least once before the bookmark corruption occurred, then you should have at least one good revision of bookmarks to call up.
The problem you describe where all bookmarks get assigned the same URL is something we've seen reported in Firefox even without Xmarks installed; in our experience it usually happens when Firefox isn't cleanly shut down (power failure, computer shut off while Firefox still running, etc.). The only fix we've found for that is to create a new Firefox profile folder or else rename the places.sqlite file as described in this other topic:
http://getsatisfaction.com/foxmarks/t...
I would recommend you do that before restoring your bookmarks, since once the file is corrupted in any browser, it will synchronize the corrupted bookmarks to all your browsers--though we've found no evidence that Xmarks *causes* the problem, we definitely acknowledge that it exacerbates it by propagating the changes everywhere. Fortunately, using Xmarks synchronization can also help you get back to where you were with the Explore & Restore feature.
Finally, the issue you mentioned where adding a bookmark to one Sync Profile causes it to appear in another--this is by design. Currently bookmarks added to the root bookmarks menu folder appear in all Sync Profiles by default, though we're considering user feedback suggesting the opposite.
I think that covers all your concerns--let me know if there's anything I'm overlooking! -
Inappropriate?OK, it looks like I have to go all the way back to the 4/30 backup to get everything restored. The next one after that is 5/10 and it has A LOT of bookmarks blanked out - more than I thought!
Not sure why there's nothing between those two dates...I'm guessing we didn't have any changes for two weeks?
There are bookmarks at work (on the "work" profile) that are not on the 4/30 set (before profiles were in use) that have changed since then.
When I restore the bookmarks, will the ones for only one profile (i.e., "home") be reset or will the bookmarks be reset for all profiles? Is there a way to selectively choose what will be restored, or somehow prevent the current bookmarks at work from being overwritten when I do the restore? Or will the normal merging happen where the newer bookmarks will overwrite the older?
Also, do I need to rename the places file on all computers, or just the one that's causing the problems?
I’m happy that I can restore from a LONG time ago, but still aprehensive about this whole problem.

Inappropriate?Several questions, but I think I can cover all the non-rhetorical questions:
- When you restore bookmarks, you should check your Sync Profiles immediately after restoring to make sure the assignments are correct. Depending on what changes you've made to your bookmarks since the version you're restoring to, your Sync Profile assignments may change.
- Restoring your bookmarks is all-or-nothing using the "Restore" button; if you'd prefer something more selective, you can save the "View" HTML file and import that into a browser. However, when you first sync after restoring, Xmarks allows you to merge bookmarks instead of downloading the restored version, so that might allow you to preserve some of your newer bookmarks on the work computer.
- Renaming the places.sqlite file is only necessary on the computer experiencing the file corruption, but it may not be easy to determine which computer that is. If you're certain which has the problem, though, definitely only rename on that computer.
I think that covers everything; let me know if I've overlooked something!
