Xmarks for IE and Safari!
Hey all,
I'm happy to announce that late last week we released Xmarks for IE and Safari (MacOS 10.5)! In addition to adding some Xmarks functionality we also included a bunch of bug fixes. You can read more about the new version on our Xmarks blog: http://blog.xmarks.com/?p=812
We're not automatically upgrading Foxmarks users to Xmarks immediately, so you'll have to go to the new download site to install Xmarks: http://download.xmarks.com/download/all
Let me know if you have any questions!
Colin

Inappropriate? The ability to sync my bookmarks with Safari and Internet Explorer sounds nice. So does syncing with Opera, FLock, Google Chrome, iCab, etc.
The only thing is, syncing between two computers has already caused me more headaches than I can possibly cope with. I keep trying to delete bookmarks, and they reappear on the next auto sync.
Yes, yes, I know. I was supposed to change the preferences file. I'm pretty sure I did that three or four times. I set it so the data on the server would be deleted and replaced with the bookmarks on my home computer. All to no avail.
So I downloaded duplicate detector, check places, search places, sync places, and sort places. I downloaded several others, but these claimed to be useful for finding and eliminating duplicate bookmarks. Something conflicted with something else, and I had to turn off one to try any of the others. I spent hours eliminating my duplicates (thousands of them), and then reactivated foxmarks.
Foxarks tells me I need to install an update to Xmarks. I install the update, and voila! Now I have four or five duplicates of some bookmarks, and at least three copies of most. I'm at my wits' end. Until Xmarks can find duplicated bookmarks, I'm not about to add IE or Safari to the catastrophic mess I now face!
Thanks, but no thanks.
I’m supremely frustrated to say the least!

Inappropriate?Where can I find a comparison chart re. Foxmarks and Xmarks. I have done pretty well with Foxmarks over the past two or perhaps even three years and have no motivation to change...though I see you are doing that anyway (I would suggest leaving us the choice, at this point.)
I just loaded Xmarks for the new IE (8) but it won't sync to my IE on another puter. I don't really understand the language it uses..."Merge Favorites with this computer, starting with the server" Does this mean the Favorites on This puter will be kept and the links on the server will be added to this system?
Will it check for duplicates? Since there will be many, as I have been maintaining some coordination of IE faves by hand.
do a features comparison chart...it will help us understand the basic systems better, as well.
I’m befuddled
-
Xmarks includes everything that Foxmarks has, plus some optional discovery functionality to improve your browsing experience. Anything that was working in Foxmarks should definitely still be working in Xmarks. Let me know if you're still having any issues with Xmarks. -
Inappropriate? If it would just check for duplicates, especially in folders five or six levels deep, then I would not have a problem at all with the merge feature. It's a really wonderful concept, but only if it helps you stay organized, instead of increasing your clutter.
I’m frustrated!

Do you use FEBE Extension?! ---- assuming that you use mainly FireFox.... It's a must have from my personal point of view.... it keeps back-ups of many things that you'd want have a back up copy of when it comes to web browser.... I usually have a couple of backup copies stored on my PC just in case anything happens.... it makes restoring much easier when disaster arise.....
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire... -
Inappropriate?I keep different sets of bookmarks in IE than those kept in FF. Since Foxmarks won't work in IE will Xmarks save only to the IE... thereby maintaining this distinction?
-
You could always just use a different account for maintaining them.
(IE: marshmarks / marshmarksie) :P -
Simple and elegant resolution, Anony. Why insist a useful solution (like Fox and X Marks) handle every little thought we have... keep the baby, toss the old water. I think I will do it that way. Thanks. -
Glad I could help good sirs! :D
And hey, you never know, it may be resolved at some point, and you won't need to fiddle with that! -
Inappropriate?my main browser is google chrome. are you going to release a version of Xmarks to chrome?
I’m frustrated
-
When Google provides a way for extension developers to link into Chrome, we'll definitely start working on it. Stay tuned to http://blog.xmarks.com/ for updates! -
Inappropriate? To the developer: If you have, as you stated above, "not automatically upgrading Foxmarks users to Xmarks immediately, so you'll have to go to the new download site to install Xmarks: http://download.xmarks.com/download/all " then could you please tell us where to download the old version of Foxmarks? To me, a download for Foxmarks that is called Xmarks no matter what link you follow is a forced upgrade. Many people would be happy (on this forum and on the Mozilla Add-On forum for Xmarks) to go get the old Foxmarks. I miss it. I will NOT install your Xmarks product again and will warn as many as I can about it's problems.
I’m frustrated
-
nobodyz: If there are problems with Xmarks, then we'd very much like to get them fixed; we don't provide an easily-accessible link to the older Foxmarks because the Xmarks extension includes numerous updates and bug fixes that will prove useful for many people. As Colin said previously, if you disable the Discovery features, then you effectively have the exact same extension as Foxmarks.
Thus, if there's some problem you're having with the Xmarks extension, please let us know and we'll find a way to remedy it! -
Inappropriate? My main browser is FireFox.... but occasionally use IE or Safari (on the Same computer) Can I possibly install Xmarks for all 3 browsers and not have problems?! It'll be nice not having to keep importing bookmarks from FireFox to the other 2 browser. I tried installing Xmarks on my IE8....just to be safe... I closed my FireFox browser while I was doing this and tried to do a Complete Download during the initial IE setup process instead of Sync, but it keeps telling me that there's error half way thru the download process. What should I do?!
I've also read in other threads that some people are using different profiles for different browsers on the same computer... Is that a good idea?! or is that a disaster waiting to happen?! I had a bad sync a while back that messed up all my bookmarks and it took me forever to delete the dups and reorganize them... so I'm a little afraid to experiment with Xmarks/Foxmarks too much..... Please advise ;-)
Also.... I've noticed that there are frequent syncing errors lately (I think it said something like Proxy Configuration error)... it's very odd since I never change a thing.... but it usually goes away by itself after a few tries.... Is this due to your migration process?!
I personally doesn't see any problems with updating to Xmarks (except the new name is a little...... ), ther's not really any changes at all but a few extra which is understandable from the business stand point..... I've looked at the new features a little and I must say that's they're not bad.... the site info is however not very useful at all since it doesn't really show anything from the few times I've tried to use it. I think some people are just over-reacting.... change is scary, I guess. Plus.... with just a couple of clicks... you can turn off all the new features... it's just the good old FoxMarks with some nice cosmetic makeover. I wish people would at least try it before bashing it.
Thanks for the help.... and for the wonderful add-on ;-) -
DJ: Sorry for the delay in responding--it's been busy times lately!
You've asked a lengthy list of questions, so I imagine I'm going to miss something, but please simply re-ask if the query still yearns for an answer.
Generally speaking, it's no more dangerous to synchronize multiple browsers on a single computer at the same time than it is to synchronize multiple computers' browsers. On my own computer I have two separate Firefox instances synchronizing via Xmarks, as well as Xmarks for Safari, and it all works smoothly.
Granted, Xmarks synchronization can sometimes hit snags; if you're still having trouble with the proxy configuration issues, please post a snippet of the error from your xmarks.log as described here:
http://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Foxmark...
...and we'll do our best to help out. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for supporting my claim, DJ. I really think duplicate bookmarks are the crux of the matter. If there were an easy, intuitive way to eliminate exact duplicates, few people would have a problem with the "forced upgrade" to Xmarks, with synching between different browsers, with synching between different computers, etc.etc. etc.
-
Inappropriate?I used foxmarks to synchronise between my imac and my macbook - it worked seamlessly using Firefox. Then I was encouraged to change to Xmarks, and there was now a version for Safari so I thought I would sync between firefox and safari and then safari would sync with safari on my iphone. In theory this should have worked seamlessly too. But now I am getting syncing error messages every few hours, duplicates, and non-syncing - it is a complete mess.
Clearing Xmarks off my systems - how could they have messed up something that was working so well and alienated a loyal customer base?
I’m sad
-
That's exactly what I was afraid to happen. I somehow don't think it's a good idea to have 2 different browsers actively running and syncing at the same time... Imagine the confusion?! I've read about some people doing this successfully with different profiles for different browsers.... Maybe you can try that?!
I however am "constantly" having a Red Question Mark over the new Xmarks icon stating that there's a "Proxy Configuration Error".... but then it'll go away by itself and return at random times...... very frustrating and scary I must say.
In the mean time.... nobody seems to even willing to answer the question regarding the possibility of syncing with more than one browser... I just want to know if it even is a good idea or not?!... It'll be nice to be able to do so since every browser has it's own shortcomings and strengths, and having the same bookmarks on all of them would make things a lot easier when you have to use a different browser from time to time.
Oh, well.... I guess that's what you get with free software. Anyway... Best of luck on fixing your problem bookmarks.... I had that once... and it was a total nightmare.... :-( Now I regularly backup mine with FEBE in my main browser FireFox ... Just in case.... -
Inappropriate?Xmarks on Safari disabled, but still problems Firefox to Firefox between my macbook and imac - if it's not broken, don't try and fix it.
This has been the most frustrating upgrade of a previously very useful tool ever.
I’m feeling like an MS user!
-
Hey hold on a sec!!..... I used Mac for over 10 years.... then finally switched to PC 4 years ago.... and I'm Definitely not missing Mac at all... I have Far Less problems on PC. They're easily upgradable by end users, way more software titles and for the price of a Mac.... I can get a Desktop PC AND a Laptop ....
Anyway.... Hope you get the problem straighten out soon though.... ;-) -
Inappropriate?Ben: Sorry for the frustration with the update! It sounds like the synchronizer mis-identified already-established bookmarks as being sufficiently distinct to not warrant merging during the initial synchronization. Did you previously have Foxmarks for Safari installed? Had you performed an upload on that computer or another browser?
Bookmark duplication is never intended in the logic we've built into the Xmarks synchronizers, but can sometimes happen as a side-effect of the effort to prevent data loss. We're definitely working on fixing up any problems that can cause duplication, so any details you can provide on replicating the problem are greatly appreciated.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?xmarks of Safari in IPhone sounds like a gimmy to me.
-
use xmarks to sync with safari, then sync safari with iphone - that works. -
Inappropriate?>> It sounds like the synchronizer mis-identified already-established bookmarks as being sufficiently distinct to not warrant merging during the initial synchronization.
Yeah, I made the mistake of moving a bunch of bookmarks out of their respective folders so the duplicates would be easier for a different program to identify. As soon as foxmarks found the folders were missing, it restored every last one of them. Now I have more duplication than ever before. I know, I know, my fault. But I still wish some program out there could browse inside of folders to locate identical URLs. -
Inappropriate?Have there been any updates to this version? The latest I have is 1.0 and I've been wary to use it with any consistency because I heard there are problems with bookmark deletion not syncing properly. I can't find any announcements on the blog or here in Get Satisfaction.
I’m frustrated
-
Yeah, there have been a few minor updates (we just updated Xmarks for IE to 1.0.11 today). But nothing that explicitly address issues deleting bookmarks. What problems are you running into? -
Inappropriate?I would like to see Foxmarks/Xmarks for both Safari (PC version) and Opera. Also Chrome.
Thanks George

Inappropriate?i like vere match safari bat it have some preoblems about arabic site like
http://b4news.net/ -
Inappropriate?Hi
I keep getting this simble error on Safari vers. 4 - and I am not the only one! But you at Xmark seem to take no notice whatsoever!
When will you at least comment on that error - or give instruction on how to completely remove your product on Mac?
I’m frustrated and angry
-
Inappropriate?I have been experiencing problems since I tried syncing xmarks with my iPhone. I'm on PC, I only use Firefox which does not yet sync direct to the iPhone so I have to use xmarks for IE to sync to IE (which I never use) and then iTunes to sync to the iPhone. My problem is that folders that I delete in Firefox are constantly being recreated somewhere. I've tried deleting them, force uploading to the server then opening xmarks for IE and force downloading but they always come back. Something is not working somewhere. The long term solution is a direct sync from Safari on the iPhone to xmarks or a server.
I’m mildly irritated
