why won't comments load on gawker and jezebel?
The comments lately are constantly just showing as "loading" - this happens frequently on Gawker and Jezebel

Inappropriate?Yes, this just started happening in both Safari (4.0) and Firefox (3.0.11). This was sudden and I haven't installed new updates, extensions, or anything else that would suddenly create this problem. I've tried reloading, as well as restarting the applications and my computer, but to no avail.
I’m missing snarky humor.
-
Inappropriate? This just started for me too, about an hour ago. This is frustrating!
-
That's when it started for me too. It has been bad before but this is the worst. I'm on a MacBook, OS X 10.4, using Safari. -
Inappropriate?this just started for me too!! its very annoying. i tried closing out of explorer entirely but still doesn't work
-
Inappropriate?Same problem here - happening on all Gawker sites and in both firefox and explorer.
-
Inappropriate?Same problem for me on Deadspin. Also doesn't show my commenter info.
-
Inappropriate?Same problem for me on Jezebel. Windows XP Pro/IE6
-
Inappropriate?It looks like javascript
-
Inappropriate? This has been going on for me since about 2 p.m. EDT.
-
Inappropriate? This has been going on for me for a few months, actually. I have to keep clicking links and sometimes I get lucky and get to see comments, but usually I just watch the circle thing spin while claiming to load comments. I use Safari 4 on my Mac OS X. (10.5.6) Also, I have to sign in to Gawker with each new page I bring up if I want to post.
-
@Oldtowntavern:
This is a different problem (I pretty sure). The few-months-old one seems to be down to rogue advertisements, I had no problem after installing an ad blocker.
The new problem - with very similar symptoms - seems to be related to the new commenting system, and it's not working for me either. -
Inappropriate?Me too.
Also have no profile/login button on the main page.
All somewhat annoying.
If any tech is reading this it would be a very good idea to either drop a note in here saying at least that you know about it, or even better to get a post put up on the various gawker sites so that we who cannot access comments at least know that it is being looked at.
I’m frustrated
-
Agreed. I cannot get anything to load no matter which browser I am using. -
I also have no Profile/Login buttons on the blog menu, and needless to say that I also cannot load comments. I seriously doubt this was tested on more than 1-2 machines before going live. -
Inappropriate?I know they installed a new commenting system but I'm not seeing any comments. I assumed yesterday that someone was working on this but it is still broken and there has been no acknowlegment that this is an issue/problem.
-
Inappropriate?I'm still having problems too (Windows XP/IE 7). And have been since the implemented the new commenting system yesterday.
I’m frustrated.
-
Inappropriate? This started for me the moment the new commenting system went live. I hope for their sake they fix it soon, before people discover that without the comments, Gawker is not nearly as interesting.
I’m pissed.
-
Inappropriate?Just wanted to add myself to the list of unhappy readers here. I had the problem intermittently, but would be able to view the comments by refreshing the page. But nothing seems to work this time. This started with the announcement of the new commenting system. Open/close browser, reboot system, nothing works. Just keep seeing the "loading comments" icon circle round and round, but nothing happens. Very very lame to get no feedback on this. May give up on gawker.
I’m very pissed
-
Inappropriate? Also, this site doesn't recognize the email address I use to log in, so I have had to reregister. Since my profile doesn't come up, I wonder if it has disappeared completely.
-
Inappropriate?I have no tried it on 4 different computers and three types of browsers - mac and pc, wireless and wired, different internet networks, etc - all to no avail. Come on, Gawker Media - your sites without comments is like, well, that stupid cupcake icon to the left without the icing.
I’m incredibly irritated by the lack of response
-
Inappropriate?Whoopee! Seems to be fixed now (at least for me). Got comments, got login and profile buttons.
Just rushing off now to catch up on posts!
I’m happy!
-
Inappropriate? The profile log in is now available so perhaps the comments will appear before too long?
-
Inappropriate?Comments should be available now. Is anyone still having issues?
-
Just logged in through Facebook. On IE 6 only the comment navigation appears ("Show all 30 comments | Start a new discussion") Clicking on any nav link takes me back to the top of the page; scroll down, still no comments visible. -
It's very, very very slow to load. I think it's slower than before, and that's saying something. -
Still cannot see comments or my profile + this help site didn't recognize my e-mail and password. -
Comments work for me on about one out of every 20 attempts. -
Michael,
Just wanted to let you know, I too am still unable to view comments (Jezebel site only, IE, Vista). It says it's loading but takes long enough that I give up and navigate away. I've been asked to stop running scripts more times than I can recall. Also, there is a less frequent problem with pages not loading (particularly true when there's a video). An internet explorer message pops up stating that the page cannot be loaded and that the operation has been aborted. Once I'm on the page "internet explorer cannot display webpage", I am able to click back and view the page without any problem. These issues have only been present since the time of the recent comments format change. Thanks for your assistance. -
I'm having the same problems as Dee in IE/Windows. I'm unable to view comments in either FF or IE, and am constantly getting a slow script window. -
Still having issues with comments loading, some load others even after multiple refreshes refuse to load. Also, tried replying to comments and crashed on Safari 4.0. -

Michael, half the time I can't get Jezzie to open, site aborted. The rest of the time the comments won't load. After about 15 attempts I might get them to load, but trying to get to page 2 aborts the window for good. I cut and pasted an editorial comment to email to someone who couldn't access the site due to IE7 aborts and it came through - blank. The problem is NOT fixed. Ongoing issues? You betcha. -
Still does not work, Michael. -
i'm still having the same problems dee mentioned 5 days ago. -
Inappropriate?I am able to view my profile but comments are still not loading for me.
-
Inappropriate?Actually, I can't even get Gawker or Jezebel to even load at all. Gizmodo loads, but still can't get the comments.
-
I can't get Jezebel to load at all in FF. I has a massive sad. -
Inappropriate?I was just able to login and view comments! Yay, and thanks for working hard on this!
-
Inappropriate?Ack!! Problem is getting worse for me! Now not only can I not see the comments, now when I click through an article I get the "Internet Explorer Cannot Display WebPage - Operation Aborted" !!! I guess I will have to give up on Gawker!!!!!!
I’m beyond annoyed
-
Inappropriate?Since the new commenting system went live, I can't get comments to load in IE or Firefox at all. Chrome asks me if I want to start a new discussion occasionally, but it doesn't show existing comments.
-
Inappropriate? My comments issues have expanded to the problem with error message listed above for "Operation Aborted". The comments are still not loading for me.
I’m about to find something else to amuse me
-
Inappropriate?I'm in the process of finding out who is placing their advertisements with Gawker media and dropping them all very friendly, professional e-mails that explain the problem and how I will not be viewing the site until its fixed. Maybe the advertisers will think twice about posting an ad if the users they are trying to reach cannot be reached.
I've also included a link to this site to show the frustration.
I’m frustrated
-
I agree totally. I will join you. -
Inappropriate?Prawo Jazdy, PLEASE pass on info about advertisers & I'll send e-mails about problems with site (& LACK of response!)
STILL not working! ARGGGG .....
I'd fire all the IT peeps and START OVER! -
Inappropriate?Same story for me and I tried it on two computers. Did all the shut down and re-start stuff too. I hate this!
-
Inappropriate? What the hell is up, same for me. Hey anyone at Gawker Media..your sites are essentially useless. I'm sure your advertisers are happy about the situation. Could someone fix this?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Still not working for me -- and referring me to this page to fix it is less than helpful.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I'm still having issues almost a week after the upgrade on Jez and Gawk. I get on the sight(s) and when I click on the post the browser closes. There are other issues, of course, but I've already listed them. And even this help site has gone wonky.
I’m curious as to why this upgrade has been so dificult.
-
Inappropriate? So something I just found out - The comments were never loading at my office. It seems that our corporate SurfControl (now WebSense) filter has autocategorized the script running their comment system as Adult Material and has blocked access to it. I put in an exception for that site and it's working just fine for me.
1 person says
this answers the question
-
Thanks, I was wondering if the security stuff used in the office is the reason that I am having issues. Guess the answer to that is yes. Too bad becuase this is the only time I go to the Gawker sites (I don't have admin rights so I cannot make any adjustments). Ah well, easy come, easy go. -
Inappropriate?Okay, this is weird. On IE, it says "a script is nonresponsive" (IE8, which I'm using because "Loading comments" just keeps hanging there). It's not just Gawker and Jezebel; I tried Lifehacker and Gizmodo on FF 3.5. It's fine on Chrome.
The only thing I think it could be is that I'm logged in? I can't figure out how to log out though since I think that's tied to the commenting system that doesn't load. -
Inappropriate?Go try it now. I just went there and it looks like it's been fixed. I could see all the comments.
-
Nope. It's not fixed. -
Inappropriate?Well, I just tried to view Jezebel & operation aborted error appeared & then site shutdown. Tried again & loading comments icon keeps on spinning.
I've wasted too much time refreshing and hoping the site loads. Keep getting scripts is slowing computer error too. Today, I did find an alternative site to Gawker/Jezebel. THE DAILY BEAST. They have similar articles/spin AND a working comments section. Though I will miss Dr. BAngieB & BowlingForDollars comments on Jezebel, I won't be back! One week is long enough to figure out the problem!
I’m FINISHED w/Jezebel!
-
Sorry but I jumped the gun. I just went to Gawker and the same sh** is happening again. Last night it was fine. WTF? -
Inappropriate?I spoke too soon. The 'operation aborted' message came back.
-
Inappropriate?I finally got the comments to load on the pederast on the airplane article, but it was impossible to scroll down or otherwise navigate around the page once it opened. Every time I moved the cursor the site would automatically refresh and hang itself up - so in order to read anything I had to do it in 1/2" increments. That was, until the window crashed after 6 attempts at this. This is actually WORSE than it was this weekend!! Look, I love this site and the comments but this is just fucking ridiculous - and really, REALLY stupid - on so many levels. If you can't write - or bother to test - code that works, can you go back to the previous.version of Jez/Gawker? Because whatever you're doing to fix it isn't working. Enough.
I’m outta here.
-
Inappropriate? What is so difficult about fixing this? You might want to consider channeling more ads to this page since the rest of the site is pretty useless. This is going on for how long now? Really?
-
Inappropriate?Certainly we're not the only people having this issue right? While I am more productive at work, I miss the site. It's unreadable now.
-
Inappropriate?Numerous fixes have been pushed to production. I suggest you clear your browser cache (in IE, with the site open, press CTRL+F5) to ensure you are getting the current Javascript release.
We apologize for all of the problems -- but are working our buts off to reach a resolution. -
What about Firefox? I cleared browser cache and cookies to no avail. :( -
Tamar - version of Firefox & OS? -
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1) Gecko/20090624 Firefox/3.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Win XP SP3 -
Not that this is any more promising, but the same occurs on 3.5.1. This time, I went the extra mile and deleted more than just the cache - I went ahead and cleared my active logons and cookies. I opened a Lifehacker page before I got this message and still see the "Loading comments" indicator on the site. -
Tamar - can you tell me what add-ons you have installed? -
That's a good idea, Tom. I might go ahead and try playing with the addons to see if they interfere.
In any event:
AdBlock Plus (um, yeah)
Better Gmail 2
Better GReader
BugMeNot
Delicious Toolbar
Extended Statusbar
feedly
Flagfox
ForecastFox
Foxtab
GooglePreview
Greasemonkey
IETab
Java Quick Starter (which I know nothing about nor how it got there - probably via Java, eh?)
MeasureIt
OldBar
Pearl Crescent Page Saver Basic
SearchStatus
ShowIP
StumbleUpon
Web Developer
I have others (History Submenus, SEO toolbar, SmarterFox, Skype Extension, User Agent Switcher) that aren't activated right now.
I'm thinking this could be a problem with feedly at first glance, so I'm going to disable it and see if that fixes it after I hit "post comment." -
All right - Gawker is not going to like it but there's a rule within AdBlock that is preventing the comments from loading. I'm not sure what it is. I remember when I was at Lifehacker that I emailed them and told them they had marked a false positive on LH -- I forgot the details -- but I assume that the same will need to be done for this specific instance, whatever it may be. -
btw Tom, you're going to need to know that the ruleset it's pulling is the pierceive.g filterset. If you can let me know what rule to unblock, that'd be awesome. I sure as hell wish there was a way to export all the blocked elements to this GS thread, but I don't think there is one. -
Thanks Tamar. I have already contacted the main Adblock Plus developer, and will look at this list.
We deliver assets (css, js, images) from our main domains:
deadspin.com
gawker.com
gizmodo.com
io9.com
jalopnik.com
jezebel.com
kinja.com
kotaku.com
lifehacker.com
and the CDN servers for each site are prefixed with:
tags.domain.com
cache.domain.com
cache-foo.domain.com
cache-foo-??.domain.com
cache-??. domain.com
so, for lifehacker, you will see these assets served from any of the following:
tags.lifehacker.com, cache.lifehacker.com, tags.gawker.com, cache.gawker.com, cache-foo.gawker.com, cache-foo.01.kinja.com (01 - 10), cache-01.kinja.com (01 - 10)
That might help to clear things up.
BTW -- for those that might want to know -- we utilize the multiple hosts to because it allows for more threads to be fired off by your web client. This improves page loading time. We also use the *kinja.com (and another domain to come) so as to eliminate cookies from these requests. They are overhead that is not needed for images and css.
Thanks Tamar! -
Hey Tom, that helps even more. Here's the specific rule that is somehow affecting the sites.
/[^\w=+]promo(\w*\.js|banner|box)(?!(\.js)?\?)(\W|_|$)/
..which was blocking tags.domain.com.
When I whitelisted tags.lifehacker.com (and subsequently had to do the same for tags.gizmodo.com), the comments loaded.
This definitely is a false positive though I don't understand regexps for the life of me so I can't figure out how to amend that specific ruleset to accommodate the JS.
Thanks for the heads up! -
I assume people are aware, but see this on the ABP site --
http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_project....g
"it is recommended not to use Filterset.G with Adblock Plus"
and
"If you already have Filterset.G Updater installed, you can uninstall the extension and remove the Filterset.G subscription in the Adblock Plus Preferences dialog." -
Inappropriate? The not-loading problem appears to be fixed for me after clearing my browser cache (iMac/OmniWeb 5.0) but it's a little slow to load. Still it's nice to see it working finally after it's been down for so long.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate? We are aware of the slowness. We are working on a solution now -- expect it to go live in about 30 minutes.
Thanks. -
Inappropriate? It looks like my issues were all fixed with this new rollout. Thank you very much for all your work to get it up and running
-
Glad I could be of assistance. Productivity can be a serious buzz kill. -
Inappropriate?I think maybe there is a further related glitch here. While everything seems to work fine where there is only one page of comments (and at a reasonable speed too), I have a problem that seems to only occur where the comments span more than one page.
First of all, it was very slow. It just took about 40 minutes to not completely load a page (I could see the comments for that page, but could not press several of the buttons).
Second, when I clicked to the next page it showed empty - no comments, no comments loading - despite the fact not all the comments (inc. one of mine) had shown on the first page. That might of course be related to the first page not loading fully.
I’m much happier of course, but I'll keep flagging any glitches I find!
-
Inappropriate?Just fixed it myself - I still had the Filterset.G filter in Ad-block plus. Once I disabled it (makes sense as it's not being updated anymore) and reloaded, the comments came back.
So to sum up, remove Filterset.G from your ad-blocker.
I’m relieved

Also see this: http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_project....g
"it is recommended not to use Filterset.G with Adblock Plus"
and
"If you already have Filterset.G Updater installed, you can uninstall the extension and remove the Filterset.G subscription in the Adblock Plus Preferences dialog." -
bruzie - it's actually a specific ruleset within Filterset.G. Scroll up and I outline the specifics ;) -
Inappropriate?Well I don't have adblock...comments won't load on IE or Firefox after clearing cache, I have the most recent version of java. Any suggestions? This is incredibly annoying.
I’m not amused
-
Inappropriate? My problem started with an update with the Gawker commenting system.
Comments were constantly ‘loading’, but fail.
Some suggest problems with their Ad-Blocking software ( or extension), to be the leading cause.
Another, I believe, a Gawker associate suggested something with the link including “tags.gizmodo.com ...”.
My Ad-Blocking extension is Ad-Block Plus (installed on Firefox 3.5.11)
And I’m currently running on WinXP SP3 but really I don’t think this matters as long as it is Firefox.
Now I want to keep my Ad-Blocking software so I’m going to change the filters (easier way is to uninstall the extension). However there might be consequences for disabling filters but for the sake of functionality, I will do it anyway.
Ad-Block Plus (Firefox ext.):
1. First navigate to your favourite Gawker page: example being gizmodo.com
2. Open up "Blockable items on current page" or |Ctrl + Shift + V| shortcut through ABP extension.
3. Search for a list of links with Address beginning with “http://tags.gizmode.com/assets/minify... ...“
4. Now search for the Filter: "/[^\w=+]promo(\w*\.js|banner|box)(?!(\.js)?\?)(\W|_|$)/” and Right click and Select "Disable filter ..."
(It should be easily recognized: it is, normally, the only one blocked by ABP).
5. Once disabled, refresh the page and you should have a working commenting system with a new integrated design.
Hope it helps.
EDIT: It seems people already figured this out! I suggest everyone read though the comments and take note of Tom Plunkett's & 'tamar' comments/posts. I'll leave this here for others to read, but if there are admins you may delete this.
PS: Remember, if you aren’t using Ad-Block Plus, just remember to find the filter that blocks out the “http://tags.gizmodo.com/assets/minify... ...” .
PPS: For those who don’t have a filter, I cannot help you. I'm sorry but Good luck in your search.
I’m thankful for those working on the problem

this is a tad misleading: the tags.gizmodo.com links are being blocked not because of the gizmodo.com page but because they also redirect to the "infamous" doubleclick pages. I would prefer to pay an annual subscription fee rather than feed into doubleclick's bank account. -
@gmerin: can you provide more info (examples, perhaps)? Doubleclick has nothing to do with the host "tags.gizmodo.com"; we -- as in Gawker Media -- use the "tags." servers to distribute images, video, css (static assets). It has nothing to do with doubleclick ( which is served via Google infrastructure -- a Google company). Anything you can offer, we will eliminate the problem as it relates to Doubleclick.
Thanks! -
Tried this and it still is not working.. ARghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh -
Inappropriate?Any fix for the comments in extremely comment heavy threads like open threads?
When I try to reply to anyone I can literally type part of the response [maybe 2 lines] and walk out of the room to do something else, come back and its still typing 1 letter every 3 seconds whilst the spinning beach ball spins away rendering my entire browser useless.
Running Safari 4.0.2 iMac G5 Os 10.4.11
I’m not happy with the new comments.

Inappropriate?Similar problem as above folks... but site specific. Comments load fine in LifeHacker and Gizmodo, but not Jalopnik.
Safari 4.0.2
I’m bummed but relieved it isn't just me
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem in the PS3 browser; comments never load. I'm sure that's not a top-priority platform, but a fix would be appreciated.
-
I'm having the issue with Kotaku comments, to be specific. Maybe someone with Kotaku cares whether anyone can read comments from the PS3? :)
I did try clearing the cache, but it didn't help. -
Inappropriate? While it's true that I'm most often unable to see the comments, the rare occasions when that is not the case only show me that Gawker has destroyed the single most attractive feature on their sites: the comments. Not sure what the motivation was to desnarkify them, but they were the single reason why reading Gawker sites was fun. They're now dull. Unless some spice returns to this feature soon, Gawker will soon be off my Favorites list.
I’m sad to see a great site destroyed
-
Inappropriate?I agree with Robert. It's also killing me that this question is labeled "answered" when it's so obviously NOT answered. The fixes(using that word loosely) don't work for everyone. Is it such a difficult thing to fix a problem? I'm guessing it is.
I’m thinking you guys have nothing under control
-

Well i messed around some more and it looks like adblock was my issue. Here is here is the exception rule that solved my problem - @@|http://tags.*.com/* the rule is more broad then I would like but I'm definitely rusty with RegEx solves it for all gwaker sites -
Inappropriate?I was unable to see the comments back when this question was posted, then after a week or so, I could see them again until today. Now it's back to always loading, but never truly loading.
-
Inappropriate?I just started having trouble loading comments today. It had previously been working. I'm using IE 8. And I've emptied my browser cache.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? This goes back at least a month. It's fixed/it's not fixed. And everyone's right, the best feature of all these sites are the comments. Without them LH, Gawker, Gizmodo are just like any other site. Patience at first but now I just wonder why they don't go back to where it was at before. It worked, people liked it. Enough said. Just because you CAN instill new technology doesn't always mean you should. I'm still with you Lifehacker but honestly it's getting annoying and I'll just move on to someone else's site who has it together.
I’m annoyed
-
This is disgraceful. First we waited and waited and waited and finally after a week or so (this goes a month back) things finally seemed to be working again. Now everything's broke once more. Either fire your IT staff or stop trying to tweak the site. "The look" is not going to attract more viewers. It is the writers. Now that Richard Lawson has left, and comments aren't loading, there's really no reason to come here any more. -
netman / ava: Comments are not working *now*? We pushed a fix live to resolve issues for people behind firewalls or using ad blocking plugins; it is possible there were issues as the code propogated, but it should be fine now.
For those behind firewalls or affected by ad blockers, we changed filenames (needed for some parts of client side code) to eliminate potential matches with ad blocking software. -
Yes, the comments are Everything!! I can read them but can't be a part of the fun. -
Inappropriate? No comments loading at all now - not even slowly (well, I waited 45 minutes).
And it is not valume dependent. It does not even load comments on articles that has no comments on it.
Bah.
I’m utterly bemused
-
Paul: were comments fine for you about 2 hours ago; stopped working about an hour ago, and still not working?
We rolled out a change (about an hour ago) to eliminate a problem whereby some of our code was being blocked by firewalls / ad blockers (basically, we renamed a file). When this propagated to CDN hosts there were some outages, but it should be ok now. -
Hi Tom. Sorry, I've lost track of time a bit today, so I can't be very precise about it.
It was definitely working this morning (UK time), or even when it was going slow it was using processor like it was trying to do something.
Then it suddenly stopped doing it.
It hasn't got better now - it is still the same (shows 'loading comments' but not actually doing any work.
I'll have a play around this end just in case my settings affect it - though I've done nothing since this morning except turn adblock off just in case.
Will post back here if I find anything. -
Me again,
Still not working - I've tried clearing cache, checked firewall logs, checked cookies- no joy. -
Oh, forgot to mention - no login buttons either -
Inappropriate?Umm, its still not working for me on any Gawker-related site.
Seriously, this is getting ridiculous. Either fix it permanently or go back to the old system. -

IE8/XP. Tried rebooting, Compatibility mode and InPrivate Browsing, all the same.
I’m sad
-
I am having the same problem on 3 different computers. I have tried both Vista and XP, IE8 and Firefox without results -
Inappropriate?I still can't load comments. I can always tell when I'm going to have a problem with it, as when I get to the gawker page, in the grey status bar at the bottom it shows a yellow triangle with "!" in it, says, "waiting for http://gawker.com..." then a very long URL shows (too fast for me to capture and paste here) but it has ad.doubleclick.net in it, then the last message is "Done, but with errors on page." At that point I know that comments won't load, and when I try, indeed they do not. All was working fine up until today....please help....

Inappropriate?Sooo when is this getting fixed- it is happening on 2 of my computers- really annoying since the comments are 90% of the draw. Fix it!!!
-
Inappropriate?Gawker Media is losing page views because of the missing comments.
I also am missing the "Profile" link in the tool bar. Before this occurred, I did notice the response time of entering a comment slowed down severely. I'd enter a line and watch the characters type out one every second or so...
Using IE8 here.
I’m cranky

Inappropriate?I am having the same problem.... The individual story page will load in Gizmodo, but the comments do not load. It's just the spinning "loading comments" graphic, but no comments. This has gone on for about a week...
I’m bummed

Inappropriate?I haven't been able to get past "Comments Loading" on Lifehacker for days. Not being as tech-savvy as most here, I can't offer any diagnostic help. Just glad I found this site so I can stop worrying that it's a problem only in my system.
-
Inappropriate?Same issue on Gawker for me - comments won't load. I'm on Vista, IE7/AOL.
Each time this kind of thing is posted, it takes weeks before some tech person responds, and still, the problem doesn't get fixed.
Whats the deal?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I have about 50 emails this AM that start out "Get Satisfaction!" - they're copies of y'all's posts replying to my upthread comment.
Gawker, you freakin' wish. I can't get no satisfaction. Looks like a lot of people are in the same boat.
Jezebel has now gone from windows initially hanging/stalling for about two minutes when they open, and gone back to the same old problems of opening - but with no comments loading in my lifetime, just that damn wheel grinding away into eternity.
I've hit CONTROL/F5 to clear browser cache, I've deleted cookies, browser history and temporary files, refreshed and refreshed again, but nada.
My OS is XP Pro, browser is IE7 for 3 computers.
I'd have posted this on the Technical Difficulties page you put up this weekend, but, um, see, the comments won't load. That's irony right there, people.
Look at your 'comments count' this weekend. 3. 4. 0. You're killing off your own site with this mishegas. I've been slowly weaned off you for a last few weeks due to non-performance. I haven't logged on since Thursday so I can't say, since all this aggro, I've really missed you all that much. It was the comments that made this site, and if they're not accessible - well, I can find other things to do with my time rather than watch you thrash away at this for the rest of the year. You insist on cramming this mess of misbegotten code down everyone's throats? Fine, your prerogative. If your plummeting numbers in terms of the site traffic hasn't clued you in that you're doing something wrong, nothing will. Your advertisers will be the ones who will figure it out for you as they leave.
Last one out the door turn off the lights, will ya? kthnxbai.
I’m through here.

Inappropriate? The good news - I can see comments today after several days of the perpetual loading comments spinning circle. The bad news? All of the Gawker sites are taking a minimum of 10 minutes to load today. I actually thought (hoped?) that the sites had been taken down to actually fix this comment fiasco. Alas, its just more of the same.
Seriously, Mr. Denton. The ship is going down. Fix it and, at a minimum, please do us the courtesy of giving us periodic updates so that we know you're trying to fix the problem and aren't just ignoring your previously loyal viewers. Because, frankly, that's what it feels like right now. -
Inappropriate?I suggets LifeHacker write a post on how to hack their lousy comments. Either LH and the rest of them are dead in the water or are sinking fast because Denton's dorks are in way over their heads.
What's the deal, either they don't give a shit or they're incompetent boobs. And thes guys are "pro" bloggers? Friggin' idiots.
I’m laughing at idiot "pro" bloggers.
-
Inappropriate?Soooo close....the pages themselves are loading again, but still with the "loading" symbol instead of comments.
I'll refrain from any snark, but I am really starting to fiend for DahlEllama and the gold star crew. -
Inappropriate?Well, it is Monday morning where I am and there are still no comments loading.
And it is more than a little galling to find an article on Kotaku headlined 'Technical Difficulties' that says 'everything's back to full strength'. It isn't. Because there aren't any comments.
I'll check back in when New York is awake, see if there's any update - I'm quite happy to help out if there is anything I can do from here - you only have to ask. -
Inappropriate?I can see comments now on Gawker and Jezebel for the first time in about 3 days on IE7. I made some changes to my Popup blocker settings to allow gawker.com and tags.gawker.com, but then I deleted the changes and the comments still work so I've got to assume that Gawker IT has made some changes in the last 30mins that have removed the problem for IE7.
I’m tentatively hopeful
-
Inappropriate? Its 7:57 am eastern, on Monday morning and Gawker won't load at all.
At least yesterday I could load it even though the comments didn't.
Now? I've got nothin'.
They really don;t give a crap do they?
I’m pissed off
-
Inappropriate?(Pst! Hey, flailing angry people? Just ask for your money back or a prorate, because apparently you have the premium edition. My Gawker is free, so I'm just gong to wait this out until it's fixed. Things break, people fix them. Quit refering to the editorial staff on a first name basis, and then blaming them for technical problems. Try offering the tech team some info like others are doing, like your OS or browser type, to expedite a resolution. Ease up, that's all.)

hilikusopus, lost income from potential customers who use services advertised on these sites. If those advertisers begin to get skiddish about an issue with potential customers not seeing the ads, they pull income. Site dies. THAT'S the issue. I don't want to see LH, Gawker, Gizmodo die. I love these sites. And besides, this is not an issue that just starting happening. The comments issue has been going on over a month and now the sites have been up and down since Saturday. It's already documented in many postings that people have sent in their browser types, offerred to let Gawker et al know any other settings. There has been very little communication from the company other than 'issue resolved', when it's not. -
netman couldn't have said it better. There have been several long standing issues, and almost no contact or follow through from Gawker; it's very frustrating after awhile. -
hilikusopus, what brodie and netman said. This has been going on since what? end of June? early July? and rather than launching a new comments code that worked, the "new" system has been crashing unremittingly since its introduction. Everyone's been patient, but to have tech standing in front of a banner saying "MIssion Accomplished" every week is pretty damn insulting as well as very dismissive of a loyal readership. It's not fixed. People have been offering their info, to no avail, and there's been damn little feedback - or progress. In this instance "people" - not "things" - broke what was working fine, and now they can't fix what they broke. Don't launch a crappy Beta version that doesn't work.and expect people - and advertisers - to be patient forever while you tweak it ad infinitum. -
@ netman, brodie, mojito: I appreciate your frustration. I also noticed a few days ago that Gawker posted a tech job opening. Maybe they are understaffed in that department. -
I saw that too. I wish I had more web development experience; I would seriously love to work for Gawker, as I'm sure thousands of other geeks would as well. :) -
Inappropriate? There may be light at the end of this tunnel. I know the sites are a bit up and down at the moment, but in the middle of all that I did manage to get onto Kotaku, and I did manage to see comments, and they were also loading five times faster than they have been.
Fingers crossed. -
Inappropriate?I'm certainly not tech-savvy, but after reading recent comments, I thought I'd try to tinker around. I added Gawker to my exceptions on IE8 Pop-up Blocker. It worked--Comments now load!
Maybe it was just coincidence and the site rolled out some changes at the same time, but I thought I'd share. -
Never mind--now the Comments aren't loading again. Maybe they loaded initially because I wasn't logged in (after making the change to the Pop-up Blocker), but then I had to log in to post reply above? I'm bummed... -
Strange. Most of the time they don't load in FF 3.5.x for me, but will load in IE6 every time, which suggests the problem is how non IE6 engines process the coding Gawker is using in the new comment system. Unfortunately, IE6 is so standards ignorant, this doesn't really help. ;-) -
Inappropriate?I was initially having issues when the new commenting system was rolled out, then I was fine, then it stopped working again last week. At first, the comments would not load. They were loading this morning but now I cannot even load up the site so I am completely locked out.

Inappropriate?Posted on Gawker: If You Can Read This Post, You're One of the Lucky Few
It always seems pretty pointless to put up a post on a website to say that that site's down. But to state the obvious: all Gawker Media sites are having really bad server problems today. It's not just you.
I'd open it up and copy the rest of it if I could - but either I can't open ANY links, or it takes 15 minutes to open. -
Inappropriate? The weirdest thing just happened. I clicked on a link to a Gawker post in my RSS reader, and it went right to it. Even stranger, the comments showed up, and right away. Very odd.
I’m wondering how long this will last.
-
Inappropriate?Line: 100 & 881
Char: 2
'FB' is undefined
I keep getting JS errors; the comments loading freezes my entire PC for a good 30 seconds before it releases and the comments load.
xp sp2; ie7
I’m frustrated. A lot.
-
Inappropriate?Comments are now loading - so that's good. They are still desperately slow though - 8 mins to load one just now.
-
Inappropriate?FIX THE +++++++ SCRIPT COMMENT BUG ALREADY !!!!!!!!!!
For a month now ALL the scripts for the comment sections in ALL the Gawker Media sites have been broken. They load so slowly that it's ridiculous: more or less a few minutes and the browser simply stops while the scripts are trying to load; and more often than not I get an error about "comments failed to load".
THIS IS NOT FIXED AND I'M PISSED!
I’m pissed
-
Inappropriate?I've been having the same problems for about a month now--the main page is fine to browse, but as soon as I click on an article (mostly look at Kotaku and Jezebel) the entire IE siezes up and I can do NOTHING online for about 2-3 minutes, then it suddenly pops over to that tab and asks me to stop running the script.
It's especially irritating that I can't even click away and look at something else while I wait for the page to unfreeze, since it freezes up my entire browser. I want to keep reading Gawker sites, but it's so frustrating.
I’m in need of a quicker site!
-
Inappropriate?I've also been having problems for about a month - the main page is fine but if I try to look at articles it all freezes up, no comments appear and I get the 'slow script' warning. Have tried on various computers (all using IE) but nothing changes. It also freezes up my whole browser so I can't do anything at all while that page is open. Really annoying and Jezebel is my favourite site!
-
Inappropriate?Comments still do not load on PS3 browser for any Gawker site.
-
Inappropriate?Nothing loads properly; the pages are all out of whack, and the comments won't load. This is both in Safari and Firefox...
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?Know what? Since I'm not a big fan of futility I haven't even checked out Gawker or Jezebel since my last post here - I'm still getting "Get Satisfaction: new reply to your post" emails so I see no one's "getting satisfaction" and no one at Tech seem to be doing much of anything.
What I do find astounding is that the site not only doesn't seem to care about old readership getting pissed and leaving and finding better things to do, it hasn't occured to them that not a lot of new readership will ever be attracted if they're not able to open a page and easily access the site topics - let alone the comments - either. Someone at another blog I read posted a URL for a topic here, which was followed by a flurry of "link not working" "site not working" comments. Watching someone commit slow suicide is never pretty - Jez used to be the first site I'd go to every day, the writers and editors seemed to have so much on the ball. Which is why the blinkered and ham-fisted decisions made since early July to keep on a course like this have been all the more surprising.
I’m no longer digusted, just merely amused.
-
Inappropriate?Thought I'd bump this up because it still applies to me. How long has this problem been going on? Have we received any help beyond "clear your cache, disable ad-block"? Unbeleivable.
I’m incredulous @ this BS
-
Inappropriate?comments aren't loading again on Jezebel or Gawker. it's also not showing my profile or the login button. it worked fine last week.
I’m frustrated that these problems continue.
-
Inappropriate? Why don't any of the gawker sites (Jalopnik, Gizmodo, etc) load on any of my machines using multiple browsers? - Firefox, Chrome, Opera, IE etc...
It just says - "Failed to load comments, please try again later"
Is the gawker comment site being blocked by a large number of ISPs?
I’m about to unsubscribe from the affected RSS feeds....
-
Inappropriate?Oddly enough they won't load for me either when using Chrome or Mozilla but will when I use Explorer (which I can't stand).
I’m more confused than amused.
-
Inappropriate?I'm unable to read comments either, which is frustrating because I'm receiving replies and I'm unable to read them! When the comments do manage to load-by some miracle, I'm unable to read comments past the jump. I can only access the first page of commentary
