a "hopeful" emoticon would be nice...
...for those times when someone says they'll fix that right away or add that feature over the weekend!

The plan now is to have the four basic "satisfacticons" shown above and let users add the most appropriate word. So for "confident" a user would select the smiley satisfacticon and add the word in the talk bubble. This provides the simple structure you mention with the benefit of extensibility at the textual level.

Something like this, we're thinking:
I’m excited

wouldn't it be great if you could respond with *every emotion ever*?

I dislike the idea of users drawing their own. Part of the purpose of emoticons is to enable users to identify mood when text isn't sufficient. Considering that people from different cultures already interpret emoticons differently, throwing an even more subjective wrench into the works with the user-drawn variety would very likely make things worse. Since emoticons function as a simplification of communication, a little structure is important. They are supposed to be relatively simple and universal, otherwise they lose that function, and then what's the point of using them at all?
With that said, I really came here to request a "confident" emoticon. When company representatives or users answer the questions of other users, this is probably the mood they will be feeling most often. Since it's the opposite of anxious, I think it belongs.

Inappropriate? We've got some cool ideas about where the emotion picker will head.
Being able to express emotions outside of the set below will be better handled as we get off our asses and do the work :).
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Maybe too, we can make that text box smart, and it can make some suggestions as you type, so popular emotions are super quick to fill in!

Inappropriate?Let me draw my own! %1

Inappropriate?I like the idea of drawing your own, for customers that's a great freedom!
What about on the company side though? For them being able to aggregate the responses and see positive trends, trouble spots, and issues that need action is really valuable too. So the freedom to draw anything AND say anything means that the data is no longer parseable. Thoughts?

Inappropriate? We absolutely need to preserve some structure around these inputs so that they're meaningful across many customers. However, there may be a way to allow users the ability to use their own and map them to one of the basic four archetypes. Self-expression + structured qualitative data = fun and useful?

Inappropriate?Simple is best. I like this approach.
Sorry, I saw the graphic Lane posted above that illustrates the satsifacticons+text idea, but since the 10 options below are still available I thought adding more emoticons was still on the table.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I love this idea. You might pre-fill the field with a simple emotion -- happy, sad, etc -- and let the user alter it from there.
I’m excited

Inappropriate?I actually was going to suggest that I like a lot of these emotions. Frustrated, sad and such are honestly really great to have because people will feel like they can be less than just "frowny" and don't necessarily have to be angry. I do think the current emoticons aren't very clear what those expressions are. I'd be happy to whiteboard some emoticons that represent those expressions anytime.

Inappropriate?would be nice or maybe creating a nanobot
