I like the cupcakes, but I have to admit that cupcakes are no longer at the forefront of the zeitgeist. These days, it's bacon. And frankly, I think bacon's time is up.
If I had my druthers, we'd be using avatars of food. How about randomizable bacon, lettuce, and tomatoes?

Gray avatar is tasteless.
Sweets make our support page more familier.
I believe users have no time to upload their avatar images when they are looking for support information.

Inappropriate?The cupcakes were yummy. Strong visceral appeal to the feeling of "satisfaction." (if you like cupcakes, that is) I was even thinking of bringing in weekly "cupcake awards" in my company for the best participation!
My hope with the gray avatars was that it would motivate more people to customize theirs, but so far I haven't seen this happening much. The gray avatars are bland, and I feel like we have lost some "flavor" by dropping the cupcakes.

What if you have like 8 different avatars people can choose from should they not want to upload their own avatar? Kinda like the Windows set up when you choose your user profile icon. They have a selection from which you can choose. Perhaps this type of idea could be implemented?

Well, we haven't quite done that. I still wish we would! As you can see, we have a new silhouette user icon, the kind you see with a lot of apps. But, that pushed out the cupcake choice, unless you randomize it after signing up, which, oddly enough, gives you an old cupcake.

Randomize?! I just got back from my profile page - I just had to try this randomize feature (I'd never seen it before). It is COOL!
On the practical side, sounds like all you need to do is add non-cupcake image options and everyone will be happy as... clams? hmm... -

Just fyi, you can still pick a cupcake from our system for your user avatar. There's a "randomize icon" link in your user account settings which gives the choice of a few different cupcakes. However, it's refreshing to see yours because I'm kind of tired of the ones we provide.
