Promote a reply or comment as a new topic
Very simple problem,
http://getsatisfaction.com/zemanta/to...
this thread is 10 months old and solved many times over. Any problems that users have are new ones and old commentators don't care about.
The questions are:
- can I lock the thread, so no subsequent replies are possible? => to force people to open fresh threads
- take a recent comment and "promote" it to a full topic and continue discussion with user in there?

Inappropriate?Unfortunately, you cannot break out a reply as a new topic, but I am with you on this one. It would make my job much easier. I am going to make this and idea and the canonical topic on this subject and try to grow it in popularity. I'd like to see this happen.

Inappropriate?You haven't answered if I can lock a thread? :)
-
Inappropriate? No, we don't have the ability to "close" a topic.

Inappropriate? This top 10 list someone posted isn't the first instance where several requests in one thread, for example there's also a few feature musings. Many people don't seem to grasp the idea of one thread per issue (so that it can be tracked separately). It would be nice if I could go through, snip the part of his post where he asked for a calendar thing, and merge that as a reply to the proper thread. It would also be nice if I could merge the other threads, and I heard merge is coming (about the same time as <acronym title="Duke Nukem Forever">DNF</acronym>), but the ability to split the initial post is good too.
Also, a button to perhaps merge the tags with the users post (I've sent several direct messages to @supereric showing examples, and he's "corrected" them in the worst possible way) their entire question in the tag, and basically a short single sentence in the actual post. I don't know if you can see the history of administrator actions (I'd be very disappointed if you couldn't! blame is very important for trust!) on this post, but he had about 2 paragraphs in the tags box and only one short sentence in the post box. Eric deleted the entire tag instead of pasting them into the question box. That's data loss, his question was deleted! (Apparently the "here's what we found" box thinks this is relevant)
In short: I know you will immediately respond telling me that by trying to organize things, that I'm "putting words in people's mouths" potentially, and that it's better to be in a huge confusing mess than an organized easy to navigate system because therefore it's "as written" instead of "as corrected". That's a good way to convince companies that it's not worth it to claim their accounts here, since they don't get any way to make it easier for customers to keep separate issues separate and the same issue together.
Since we're talking about threads that should be merged, I tried to install Help Center on my server, everything's set up right, I downloaded the compiled version from the admin panel so it should be ok, set up the config (it's actually base.php that has the DB settings, the instructions are wrong in saying config.php does, also chowning it to the webserver is bad, you should chmod it instead), and I get sent to admin-findsite.php and the message
It looks like something went wrong.
Start over at the Help Center Home Page.
Or report this problem to Get Satisfaction.
I checked the error.log and I get no PHP errors at all. I'd like some way to debug what's going on here, heh. Using 0.61.
Another side complaint: Why don't posts get updated with progress reports? Shannon's Grand Input was enjoyed by all 6 months ago, but no "we've done this!" replies have been made.
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Need to be able to split threads and posts.
I’m unsure
