Adding sounds to push notifications
I've just started using the push notifications feature of Gowalla 1.2 and really love it - however, I get quite a few of them and don't always realised they've arrived due to the lack of sound. It would be great if you could add sound to the notifications (I believe it's one word to be added to the JSON payload from your server) even if it's just the default one (although hearing Josh shout "GOOOOOWWWAAALLLLLLAAAAA" would be fun).
The great thing about this suggestion is that it's one word to add to your server (not a new app update) and that the means to enable disable it is already built into the iPhone app as your app asks for permission for badge items, alerts, and sounds (although the only one I can see being used currently is alerts).
Would be great to have a list of most recent friends check ins as a tab in the app and a badge icon to show number of recent check ins you've not seen though in a future app update ;)

Great ideas. We're definitely planning to improve push notifications (by including checkin message in the text, and using badge numbers). Sound is on the to-do list too; we haven't added it yet because it has the potential to be so annoying. But you're right, it could also be really handy.

Inappropriate? It would be good as long as you can disable it :)
-
Inappropriate? You can already disable it via the push notifications preferences in the iPhone system settings (Settings -> Notifications -> Gowalla) which is why it can be one of those things to be added easily as if people find it annoying they can revoke the sound rights they have previously agreed to the same as in any other push app.

Inappropriate? However, I enjoy the silent one as it is ~ I like to know when someone checks in, but I am sure my students would look askance if a noise enabled version piped up in the middle of class :-).
-
You should have your phone on silent in class :p (but then again you could just disable push notification sounds as well) -
Here is the deal ~ If I pick up the phone on break, I can now see check ins that happened recently. I like that and wouldn't want to have to disable for noise. -
You wouldn't need to disable the notifications, only the sound element of the notifications. You could leave both "alerts" and "badge icons" turned on and still get the latest notifications exactly as you do now without receiving a sound. -
Well you could have someone shout "GOOOOOWWWAAALLLLLLAAAAA".. alternatively the sound of a Gowalla is very similar to the sound of a dying yak - kind of a "mwwwaaa mwwwaaaaaaa" noise. -
Inappropriate?I'd love an interface where I can upload my own sounds. ;-) This can been done by an webserver on the iPhone application where the user can login to.

Inappropriate?I also think sound should be enabled, but it would be nice if you could enable/disable it on a per-friend basis. I'd like to have push notifications on for all my friends but only audible ones for some of them. Being able to chose vibrate on/off in the same manner would also be nice.
