App crashes intermittently
The application crashes sometimes. I don't see a pattern yet and it is intermittent, but will report one if I see it.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the heads-up! We'll take a look at finding that bug.
If you do wind up noticing a pattern in the crashing (eg, always right after you stash an icon or survey something), please add that description here! Thanks! -
Inappropriate?I find that Gowalla crashes on my iPhone mostly after checking into a spot and then tapping the "Spots" back arrow in the top left. Gowalla loads the Spots screen, but can't find anything and then crashes.
There was another instance in which the app crashed a few times, but I don't remember what it is off the top of my head. I'll keep an eye out though.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I'm finding that this is usually the result of the app ungracefully handling network outages. I think we've found the bug. Hopefully we'll squash it in the next release.
-
Inappropriate?I had a lot of crashes when trying to create spots yesterday in central London - it would usually crash once I'd chosen a title / category / description and it was trying to load the next screen (where you get a view of the map location). There were occasional crashes once a spot had been created but the majority were before creation.
I'm running iPhone 3.1 beta 3 on a 3GS.
I’m sure it'll work better in 1.2 update
-
Inappropriate?Unfortunately it seems that the release of Gowalla 1.2 has actually increased the number of crashes I have been having rather than reducing them. Within 30 odd minutes of use (including the creation of a number of new spots) I had 4 or 5 times when the ap just closed itself. There seems to be no real pattern to the crashes although they do seem more prevelent when going back to the passport screen. (Maybe the new way the icons are handled is a problem?) I tried a hard restart of the phone but this didn't improve the situation at all.
Running a standard iPhone 3G with latest iPhone software installed.
I’m sad

Ugg — That's not cool. Where are you located? When I see crashes, it's generally due to a bad data network connection. -
Inappropriate?I was marking spots around and about the centre of Oxford. We don't have the worlds best data connection in some parts of the town but I was getting full 3G connection at times and was still suffering from crashes.
-
Inappropriate?I'm still getting intermittent crashes in 1.2 as well - generally seems to be around spot creation again for me (I'm thinking it may be when there is a bad network connection and it tries to load the map)
-
Inappropriate?Good to know. You can test and test and test, but until you get it in front of a bunch of folks in different places you never know. We're looking into it.We certainly appreciate any other insight you come across that might help us find the source.
I’m bummed. But we'll fix it!
-
Inappropriate? It happened to me yesterday too. I got it when I checked in to a pre-existing spot, then returned to the spot list. Tapping on another spot in the list caused the app to close down.
However, I found that if I slowed things down a bit (I was excited about the new release...) it seemed to prevent this. -
Inappropriate?Yup. Still getting crashes when checking into existing spots as well as when creating new ones. There's no obvious pattern, but I'll try slowing things to see if that helps the application.
-
Inappropriate?I can confirm that Gowalla crashes on my iPhone often enough for me to notice and want to put a message on Get Satisfaction. That equals about 2 - 3 crashes per hour.
I don't think I have ever gotten an error message. The app usually just disappears back to my iPhone home screen.
This usually happens when I am entering a description for a new point or when I am viewing my nearby spots.
I have wondered if it is to do with shaking the unit, as I use it when I walk a lot. I know that shaking can be used for "Undo" when typing and I wonder if that might is what is being invoked? -
Inappropriate?I haven't noticed an issue with Gowalla crashing since using the 1.2 release. I had been using the 1.2 beta for a month or so with an occasional crash, but after installing the 1.2 final release, I've had maybe 1 crash (and I believe it was a network problem).
Those that have a problem with crashing may want to restart their iPhones, which sometimes cleans up memory issues. But I've been using Gowalla every day, and multiple times per day, for months now with no real problems.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?I have 14 crash reports (both the plist and xml files) from the last 3 days. Is there somewhere I can send them to? Do you get these reports from Apple when we elect to send data during a sync?
I have tried restarting the phone a few times, I am using Gowalla 1.2 and iPhone 3.1 with crashes at least a few times an hour.

Really sorry to hear that! Yeah, we'd love to see those, so hook us up at live {a t] gowalla dot com. We're always trying to make it better, and we'd like to see those. As to whether they go to Apple during syncs, not sure about that. -
Inappropriate?I find that trying to check into more than one spot in a row without closing the app, causes crashing.

Inappropriate?CRASHES! Ever since the update to version 1.2 all I get is crashes. I have checked to make sure I had wi-fi, I've been outside and had a connection. I tried last week to add new spots while away running errands in the next bigger town over (40 mins away, so it's not a regular thing). I was excited to gowalla while there. NOTHING worked. Not once. I tried more times than I can remember. I couldn't even check in at the two places I created before. I know in some cases I spent more time trying to make gowalla work than I spent shopping inside. I get my passport and location, but every time I try to check in it crashes. Today I was able (after 4 times) to check in at Sonic (a spot I had previously created). On the 4th try I finally got it check in, but as soon as the blue box with "you have checked in" appeared, it crashed again. I did not get the opportunity to pick up or drop an item.
Also creating spots is even harder. IF I get to create the spot gowalla crashes when I try to choose a category. I tried 8 times to create a spot just this morning without choosing a category and it wouldn't let me.
I didn't have these problems with the 1.0 version; is there a way to get the old version back so I can play again?
I’m sad, almost angry
-
Sorry to hear it, Rae. Could you email us your crash report files? ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[iphone name]/ -
Inappropriate?Jonathan, thanks for the reply, sorry mine is so late in return. We've been busier than we planned this week. we were out some yesterday and had a good gowalla day. We had to go back to town again today so I decided to wait until today's outing to see what happened. Nice day, no clouds (thought the weather could have been a bad connection issue), great connections, plenty of network availability and problems at all places. I'll be glad to send my files your way; do you want all the crash files for comparison or just the gowalla crash files?
-
Inappropriate?I'm definitely seeing crashes around spot creations. Typically it crashes on the "Your spot will be created here:" view with the map.
-
Inappropriate?Ok I think I've nailed it down:
When you check into a spot, it automatically loads the items screen. However, it sometimes takes a little while for the items to appear and when they do they disappear and then appear again. This happens on mine without fail (sometimes it's a quick flicker, sometimes it takes 5 secs or so but it happens).
If I check-in and then press the "spots" back button at the top before the items have loaded for the second time, then it crashes. I've been testing this theory over the past few days and it seems to be the only thing crashing mine.
I'm running OS 3.1.2 on an iPhone 3GS.
Ben
I’m happy I discovered what was crashing it so I can at least stop doing it till it's fixed!
-
Ben - you've beaten me to it as I couldn't find the right thread!
That's exactly the same as I've been experiencing. If I wait for the items to load the second time before tapping the spots (back) button, then no crashing. If I tap the button before, it crashes.
I know the excitement takes over sometimes, but being patient will stop the crash! -
Brilliant!!! -
Well-described, Ben. I've had the very same experience with the same phone and OS. I also wonder if this little hang-up around the items screen is part of the reason I haven't found any new items despite creating and checking-in at many new spots. I'm now out of items completely and I wonder if there's something wrong with the way they should be awarded on check-in to a newly-created place. -
Inappropriate?Tilting into the fullscreen map mode and back often crashes the app.
-
coming back from map mode crashes frequently for me too. -
Inappropriate?I've had it crash when creating a new spot by going back and forth between the various categories ("Hmm, is this a scenic viewpoint, or a historic landmark? Maybe it's a big blue wet thing..."). It's also happened while I've been composing my description, which admittedly can take me a while. What can I say, I'm a bit of a perfectionist :)
I've got the iPhone 3G, if that makes a difference. -
Inappropriate? Here it crashes when checking a friend request via the app. Creating and checking in has gone flawless so far :-)
-
Inappropriate?I've been experiencing more frequenting crashing, usually happens when I'm checking in... I relaunch and sometimes find I may have lost my signal entirely or has me positioned blocks away from where I actually am... I've had to reboot my phone over and over again til it comes back so I can check in...
It's frustrating, and yet does not stop me from standing on a busy street corner cursing my phone until it sorts itself out so I can check in ;)
I’m hoping the new upgrade will fix this!
-
Inappropriate? For those who may still be experiencing some crashes (Megan, any others), last night we pushed 1.3 to the app store for approval, and, among other things, it does add more stability and help reduce random crashes, so look for this really soon. (Please approve it fast, Apple!)
-
Hooray! ...I don't blame you guys, I blame Apple, or the clouds, or the guy who walked by and got in the way of my check in waves ;) -
Where is the update? Is it normal with over two weeks App Store approval time? -
Where is the update? Is it normal with over two weeks App Store approval time? -
It is very usual for apps to take over 2 weeks to become approved. In the run up to Christmas lots of apps are being submitted so average wait time is between 14 and 21 days. Of course, the app may have been rejected for some reason and would need to go into the submission process again. It's all a case of cross fingers and patience! -
Inappropriate? On the iPhone app, I have no items, but if I touch that area wear the items should be, the app crashes.
I’m undecided
-
I'm seeing something similar. One of the few places I've seen repeated crashes with the current version (1.3.0) is when I click on items that I want to vault. After clicking on the item, the app sometimes crashes. -
Inappropriate? My gowalla (and 2 other phones i've tried) crashes when i turn the phone sideways (usually on accident) and then it half loads the map and i quickly turn the phone upright again to see the list of spots. 9/10 times it maps it crash if i don't want for all the 20 pins to load on the map before turning it 90 degrees again.
-
I've had this happen too, I usually turn it just enough (by accident) then get stuck on the map page and have to quit and reboot the app. -

Inappropriate? My app crashes every time I click People for that location.
-
Inappropriate?I think, the reason is a big(?) memory leakage in the app.
Using SBSetiings I can see how free memory shrinks and shrinks while using the gowalla app. after some minutes the app is *very* slow and/or crashes!
I’m waiting for next version of app
-
Although I didn't do any memory investigation to prove it, I had guessed this was probably the cause. I have the same issue. After using the app for a while, it gets slower to respond to use input and then eventually crashes. -
Inappropriate?I have found a very consistent crash with the Gowalla iPhone application:
http://getsatisfaction.com/gowalla/to... -
Inappropriate?I found the crash popped up after i deleted a spot i created and now crashes whenever I try to bring up my profile. It will open for friend notifications but crash when I hit passport.
I’m frustrated
