Can only check-in to spots I create
I have been unable to check-in to places even when they show up in my view - there is a disabled "Check-in here" button that never becomes enabled, despite showing me where I want to check-in (a screenshot from about a month ago can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gumption...). This happened a few times while I was in Florida, in fact I found that the only places I to which I could check-in were those that I had created. I hypothesized that this was due to my coordinates being different from those of the person who had originally created the place; if this is the case, I would urge you to relax your coordinate matching constraints, as it was frustrating enough that I stopped using the application (a recent email from GoWalla, which included a link to this site, prompted me to offer some feedback).

Inappropriate?But... you're over half a kilometer away from where the spot was created in that screenshot...
Are all these spots you are having issues with checking into hundreds of meters away from you when you attempt to check in?
I’m confused.

Inappropriate?I guess the issue here is the size or granularity of spots. I was on the UCF campus, and wasn't sure of the name of the building I was in, so simply wanted to check-in to UCF. The disabled "check-in here" button gave me the impression I should have been able to do so. The other spots that showed disabled "check-in here" buttons were either specific pavillions at Epcot Center or stores / restaurants around Downtown Disney and the resort area. I can't remember the specifics anymore - and didn't capture screenshots (frustration threshold had been exceeded) - but suspect these were spots that were within tens, or at most hundreds, of meters of the spot showing up on the screen. I just remember seeing the spots I wanted to check-in to pop up on my screen, being frustrated at being unable to check-in to them, and not wanting to create duplicate spots (which seemed like the only "solution"). At the very least, I would suggest not showing a disabled "check-in here" button when, in fact, a check-in is not possible.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the feedback. Sorry you had a frustrating experience. The spot tab will show you nearby spots and how far you are from them; it also updates as you walk. You'll want to get fairly close to the spot to check-in. In other words, if you want to check-in at a restaurant or coffee shop, you'll need to be in proximity to the restaurant or coffee shop.
However, very large spots like an airport or university sometimes need tweaking to make sure they're easily accessible. We don't like to come up short, so we'll keep working to make sure the Gowalla experience is truly great.
