DUPLICATES [enter to be sorted]
Wanted to enter this in that one duplicate topic that has quite a few posts, but couldn't find it. Hoping to make this one the defacto "Please Delete Duplicate" thread (of course, not a critical thing, just would like to see one central repository for such things).
With major events such as Austin City Limits, inside a city with a tremendous number of spots, duplicates are bound to happen, especially if the player doesn't know to narrow their search in the spot they are in to ensure they aren't about to create a duplicate. That said, however, the GPS can sometimes deceive the player and "hide" a spot, despite it's Featured status.
Stubbs BBQ (This is a Featured Spot since Feb 25, 2009)
Duplicate Stubbs: http://gowalla.com/spots/36319 (created Oct 4, 2009)
I don't envy the clean up after major events in large (and heavily Gowalla'd) cities such as this. Especially when the duplicates are those cool icons of the town. Would like to think there is a way to transfer a check in to the appropriate locations.
Regardless, and as always, HAPPY GOWALL'ING!

Inappropriate?Uncle Billy's Brew & Que has been duplicated on Oct. 3 here:
http://gowalla.com/spots/35567
There is an item there as well that might need rescue.
Tom Walton created Shady Grove on Jul 22, 2009. It's duplicate (http://gowalla.com/spots/22563) was created Aug 26.
2 items present at his location (and unfortunately, the one I checked in at). -
Inappropriate?Riobello has been created 3 times (at the same time... annoying network bug in old Gowalla version) and needs to be merged:
http://gowalla.com/spots/22958 - Merge into this one

Ben -
These were fixed, but not by me :) -
Inappropriate?Ginger told me she couldn't see this spot (from within the building) so she created it anew. Weirder still, it put it some 3 kilometers up the highway. I believe she'll likely check in rather soon should this be easier to delete than be merged.
Main Event (created Mar 25, 2009) duplicated here: http://gowalla.com/spots/36166 on Oct 4, 2009. -
Fixed. -
Inappropriate?Just spotted a couple of duplicates come in:
Spot: http://gowalla.com/spots/38261
Duplicate: http://gowalla.com/spots/38260
I’m keeping things tidy around here
-
Fixed. -
Inappropriate?Keep 'em coming. We're going to do a massive merge list really soon for spots that are dupes but have a stash/multiple visitors who haven't visited the original spot. Original spot creator keeps the title, though everything else should just merge nicely.
-
Are you still checking these? -
Inappropriate?I created a spot last month and a friend recreated it not knowing how to work Gowalla yet... They are:

Can the info be merged? -
This one was taken care of. -

Many, many thanks!
-
Done x TEN! Wow. Thanks :) I didn't know which "Oliver Cromwell's House" you wanted me to keep between the 6 of them that you listed. I took care of the first block of 4... Is the 2nd block of 2 the same place or d you want those 2 merged into one? -
I think this is done. The last two Cromwell houses are duplicates of one another. So that leaves us one from the block-of-four and one from the block-of-two. I used Google Earth and figured out where the right spot is.
So this one is complete. -
Inappropriate?Every time a duplicate spot is deleted or merged, a kitten somewhere gets a nice pat on the head.
:)
I’m not really contributing anything to this thread, am I?
-
Bunch of happy kittens lately. -
This appears to have been done. -
Inappropriate?I would like to see the facility for a 'power user' in each city to be able to police these duplicates on behalf of Gowalla - and delete them. That way the app can be cleaned up for everyone else. Thoughts?
-
This would be nice, moderators of sorts. -

I’m thankful.

Got the first one.
Of the two Five Guys spots, which is closer? If neither, can you tell me where it goes? -
I think the first one's more accurate (according to Google Maps), but can't quite place it. -

These are done. Used Google Maps to find the correct location of Louisiana Lagniappe. -
Inappropriate?Another Featured spot has been recently duplicated.
The Driskill (Featured spot created Feb 25, 2009)
Duplicate "Driscoll" (created Oct 16, 2009 – also a block off the mark)
With so many spots in such a small area, I'm wondering if it is becoming almost impossible to see spots you are standing right next to in the app. If the app is showing the Top 20 most visited spots closest to you, that may be an issue (though with this spot's Featured status and 60+ visitors, I'm failing to see how someone wouldn't have seen it). I have no idea how to combat this problem.
Gowalla is starting to become so awesomely popular, over-saturation is inevitable.
Please practice responsible Gowall'ing!
Dr. Peddingferd -
To be honest, I think a large part of the problem is the lack of instructions/guide with the app or on the website. These duplicates (i.e. new spots at long-created spots) could be due to new users not knowing how to check first using the filters - especially since some areas have seemingly become overrun with spots. -
Not browsing to ensure the spot doesn't already exist is, I believe, the #1 cause to this problem. Perhaps, then, when hitting the "New Spot" button and upon selecting a category/subcategory, the user is then shown a list of spots nearby that also fall in that same category/subcategory.
As an example: I'm about to create a burger joint and upon selecting "American" which shows the burger and fries, a list of the 20 closest "American" Food spots appears. If the spot I am about to create is listed, I select that spot and it allows me to check in (or tell me I need to move a bit to check in). -
That's not a bad suggestion - but relies on everyone selecting the same category. For example, someone may put a spot as 'burger' and another as 'American'. Or - as some sub.cats. are in more than one category - one may select historic landmark under architecture, another under nature.
It just requires a bit of thought before a spot is created, that's all, but sometimes the excitement takes over!! -
Just checking for the name would do it for most.
Or even just a reminder to check the list first.
I think the problem for most people is they assume the place isn't there. -
I wonder if this is an interface design problem on the App itself. Perhaps remove the "Create Spot" option from the main screen, force users to only check-in and be presented with list of spots sorted by proximity, then offer the option to Create Spot in that screen... -
@ASimba :: actually, I believe you are correct. A lot of these duplicates cropped up once that "New Spot" button appeared on the Passport page in the latest release. This completely circumvents the need to even look at the Spots list. -
Inappropriate?Arams No. 2
http://gowalla.com/spots/29892
http://gowalla.com/spots/52812
I'm think all of the above suggestions about UI changes to prevent this would help (especially Dr. Barnabus Peddingferd's) but a simple thing you can do is have the back end check at the time of creation for other items with the same name very close by (like Jo Carter suggested) and, if found, just tell the user the entry already existed, and ask if they'd like to check in there. Yeah it wouldn't catch ones with similar names but it'd probably catch the vast majority of dupes.
It's pretty rare that this would ever be a problem and you could always just add another "no i really meant to create another one" button.
Also, why not have a button on the web site to indicate that a spot is a dupe. It would pop up a little form asking the person to paste in the URL of the spot this is a dupe of (yes that interface could be made more elegant but that's a simple way to start off).

Inappropriate?the L bar
http://gowalla.com/spots/50846
http://gowalla.com/spots/50842 - duplicate of above
Olive Garden
http://gowalla.com/spots/53969
http://gowalla.com/spots/53970 - duplicate of above -
Fixed the Olive Garden, but the L bar is in two different spots... which one is correct? -
Done the L Bar. Used Google Street View to find it! (The first spot was correct). -
Thanks Lee!! -
Noticed that whoever merged this one, the "Duplicate" spot description is added to the "original". Wondering if the Original had a spot description in the first place... -
Literally just did this and updated the description as well (original did not have one and the one to be merged was "throw-away" copy). -
Irene - I noticed that when I merged a spot that had no description with the dupe that did, the description carried over to the original. If the original and dupe had two different descriptions, the original was kept. -

Inappropriate?I notice a lot of stuff seems to show up at 0 lat. 0 lon. on the map. For instance:
http://gowalla.com/spots/22132
Type "inn" into the 'Search for Spots Near' field, and pretty much the whole list is of places showing up at 0 lat 0 lon.
It's also a duplicate:

http://gowalla.com/spots/46996
New York Aquarium:
http://gowalla.com/spots/13752
http://gowalla.com/spots/45212
Some of the duplicates are simply user error of not knowing a spot is there before they create it (Madison Square Garden). However, some (Waverly Inn) are all created by the same user all within a few minutes of each other. Is that the app sending the request to the server 3 times? If so, that needs to be fixed.
-
The 3 Waverly Inns are now merged.
The 2 New York Aquariums are now merged. However, a "No Method Error" results from attempting to further edit the spot (ie: to change the icon). -
It should be noted for Alamofire that http://gowalla.com/spots/22132 , all of the Joes Crab Shacks, and all of the Grandad's Farm spots are at 0x0 and should be deleted, unless you have logs of where it should go. -
Inappropriate? Here is a duplicate to be looked at.

Inappropriate?I'm posting this comment to consolidate effort on this thread.
Perhaps we could have a sticky issue at the top that we can cycle through weekly? That might help focus delete/merge/move efforts.
From how I read this, everything except the list below has been finished.
