Any update or details on the plans to develop an Android version of the Gowalla app? Experimenting with my first-gen iPhone, but want the app on my GPS-enabled G1!

Hey, SnoWake, we're definitely planning to develop Gowalla for other mobile platforms. We don't have a timeline yet, but we're really excited about bringing Gowalla to Android in the future. Thanks for playing around on your 1G iPhone! You're Gowalla-rific! :)

What's the status on the Android application? Is it being actively developed? -
-
what a pretty sighting! -
I thought you might like that! -
nice :) is there a option to help you testing the app? -
Inappropriate?I'd love an Android version too so that my friends with Android phones could play too - I'm trying to share the Gowalla love but not everyone has an iPhone for some reason lol
-
Inappropriate? With all the Android phones hitting I'm really surprised they haven't gave a more definite "yes, we're working on this right now it's probably 6 to 8 weeks out."
Any new info guys?
I’m happy
-
It really is a top priority for us at this very moment, a solution for non-iPhones (including Android). -
nice to hear this! i'm selling my iphone 3g today and getting the samsung galaxy :) -
Inappropriate?I'm moving from my iPhone 3G to the HTC Hero a week from tomorrow - it would be awesome to get gowalla on the android platform too!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I'm moving from my iPhone 3G to an Android phone too - "it would be awesome to get gowalla on the android platform too!" Ditto
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?wow, cool to see all these folks moving from iPhone to Android platform? I never thought that kind of thing would happen.
I’m happy
-
Why not? The iPhone isn't perfect and it's just not the phone for some people! Like any phone, it has good and bad points. -
Yep, I just switched from the iPhone to the Moto Droid. Happy as all heck now :) -
still rocking my G1 "O.G." Android, and looking at a Galaxy... Let's get that Android app DONE! :) -
Inappropriate?I'm really hoping for an update on the status of the Android version of Gowalla. I really want to use it, but I'm very much an Android person, not an iPhone person, due to needing certain features. When can we hope to see it on Android?
I’m slightly frustrated
-
Inappropriate?is anyone with gowalla watching this thread? Id love to join all my iphone buddies in using gowalla. please let us know the status of the android / gowalla application.
-
Inappropriate?Buying my Android tomorrow. The store is making sure to hold one for me. So badly want to see Gowalla for Android coming not long after. I am so stoked to be getting the Android, finding out Gowalla is an app for it would make it even more enjoyable.

Inappropriate?Another week goes by...

I sent a tweet to Gowalla the other day re: the Android update. I'm happy to report that an Android compatible version of the application is nearing launch. -
Inappropriate?yea...... I cant wait - thanks Huuuze.
-
Inappropriate?Awesome! Going Android tomorrow and looking forward to finally using Gowalla.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?OK, Droid in hand. Lots of apps have joined me, but still missing the much coveted Gowalla. I'm waiting patiently. Oh, and I love my Droid!!!
-
Have you tried the new mobile version? Does it not work on Android -

Inappropriate?I tried the Gowalla for Mobile Web thing just announced in the Blog, and it doesn't look like it's working on my Motorola Cliq. I really hope there's still an actual app in the works, because m.gowalla.com is a non-starter.
I’m disappointed.
-
It's apparent that folks with smart phones don't want to deal with a mobile-site. We want client apps! :) -
Thanks for the info! I'll try checking in somewhere today, and see if that fixes it. -
Inappropriate?Android, Symbian, BlabBerries, Verizon phones (but do NOT let them charge extra for it - if the app is free on iPhone, then it should be free on any other service and any other phone - no BS sub fee nor one-time fee - it either needs to be free all around or charge fairly all around)
-
Inappropriate?is the mobile version of m.gowalla.com broken for anyone else?
trying with my vanilla htc magic, it won't display any content on the tabs. :( i have the 1.5 version of the firmware.
Thanks.
I’m sad
-
If you mean broken in that it's all but useless, then yes. It is unable to properly use the GPS most of the time, and even when it is able, it will switch back and forth between different locations.
Add to that, its seeming inability to actually find places nearby that I know for a fact others have checked-in at using the iPhone app.
And yes, it constantly has issues with the tab content. -
Inappropriate? When using it, I too have had to clear my cache & reset my phone to get it to display the proper GPS location instead of bouncing back to a prior location. Refreshing doesn't fix it much of the time, it seems. It's a hassle but I can deal because I want so much to play, so I can work around the glitches.
I think it's tough to ONLY have the ability to check in to places, and not be able to pick up or drop items which is an integral part of this particular app.
I'm happy for any opportunity to Gowalla... but also frustrated to be able to "kind of" play, yet have it be so limited -- without any ETA or response / timeline on when some of the added features will be coming, either to mobile, or to a stand alone Android app.
I’m anxious
-
If it helps, you can find random items when checking in, it just doesn't tell you. You'll see them next time you log into the site proper. -
Inappropriate? It definitely helps & was a nice surprise, but I've vaulted all of the unique items that were dropped into my pack & my pack is stuffed with 10 duplicates. And I've found 3 items out in the "wild" via Gowallatools that I am desperate to pick up! :)

Inappropriate?Plz can haz naytive appz??
KTHX -
Inappropriate?I got tired of waiting and Gowalla's mobile web app is shit.
I downloaded foursquare's app that's on the Market and got my friends on the iPhone to switch to foursquare.
Wonder why foursquare can do it but Gowalla can't.
I’m over it
-
Dude, you're so right. My friends aren't that invested in Gowalla yet, I think I'm gonna get them to switch too. -
Don - Gowalla is primarily a location-based app and so the devs want to get the user experience right. With FourSquare you can check in to places from the comfort of your home. This less-than-accurate system is no doubt much easier to develop than what Gowalla are trying to achieve.
I don't play FS as i'm not (un)lucky enough to live in, or near, one of their chosen cities. I play Gowalla because I can play it anywhere. I also actually want to visit places which I don't need to do with FS.
FS and Gowalla are different games, so if playing FS is more your thing then go for it! -
Inappropriate?I want the Android app too but the webapp is a great compromise for now.
I'm sure they're not just sitting around ignoring Android. It will be ready when it's ready. -
I'm aware of the webapp, and i know the are currently hiring for someone to work on the android team.
My thought is when you're trying to create a community of users, you shouldn't alienate a large segment of potential consumers. -
Application development takes significant time; it's not trivial. The Gowalla team is small. Give them some time, ok? There's no "alienation" going on. -
@ Frank -- Good point. And while I am one of the many Android users eagerly anticipating a client app for my phone, it's clear that as a "business" decision, the iPhone app had to be released first. I think the disappointment here is that with any small amount of foresight, the Gowalla Chiefs should have seen that Android was going to growing in a hurry. -
Inappropriate?Yes I know we are very impatience but we (androidusers) are a little annoyed by the fact iPhone has a app and Android has not...
-
It's understandable, but as has been mentioned, the app store was the natural choice to target first. I know from reading posts from the Gowalla team on here that they are pretty desperate to get the Android app out as soon as possible, but I just don't think they want to release something that's not right and doesn't give the same user experience as the iPhone app. -
Inappropriate?I had a quick look and it seems Gowalla doesn't export a API. If a public API was available then some impatience and skilled developer outside of the company could create a Gowalla app. I recently have began helping the open source Android Foursquare app, which seems to be created completely outside of the Foursquare company.
-
I'm sure I read on here that they were looking at a Gowalla API as well. -
Inappropriate? The Foursquare App is great on Android. And it allows iPhone & Android users to play together - something right now the Gowalla app doesn't do.
It's not always just about the software - the community has a large influence as well. If one app has something that another doesn't ... well typically the other app wins out. Foursquare happens to have the ability to let Android owners play where Gowalla doesn't - regardless of their intentions.
I think as apps become more ubiquitous and other platforms catch up to the iPhone you're going to see a lot less time between platforms being released if not a simultaneous release. -
Inappropriate? It would be worthwhile looking at the model Evernote use for their Android application. They are making it available on their website for download and testing before releasing it to the android market. This is also the way that Brightkite introduced their android application.
It allows 'beta testers' to help spot some of the bugs before the application is rolled out en-mass. -
When did Evernote get an Android app - that has been the biggest adjustment coming from the iPhone - must GO SEE! -
HeeHee, well I for one pestered them for a while :) They too were afraid of releasing something that was not up to their usual high quality, using beta testers (many of whom report back problems) has been a good move for them. When they do release to market they will have an excellent app. -
it's installed and working - in the minute bit of testing that I can do right now - thank you so much for posting this - I had no idea it was out and really has cramped my work flow! -
Glad I could help. They seem very active on it, think we have had 3 releases in less than a week recently.
I also know that local storage is on their "to do" list too, which will be great. -
Inappropriate?Whats the status on the Gowalla Android app? Time of release?
-
Would like to know that too. Foursquare and Brightkite will grow stronger until there will be an Android app for Gowalla. Then it might be to late, hence users are pushing eachother to stick to the service that got the most friends that they can collaborate with. -
Thanks, Netfred, for mentioning Foursquare and Brightkite. I'm gonna go check those out now. I'm tired of waiting for Gowalla. -
Inappropriate?Rico, U R welcomed. See you on Foursquare and Brightkite. I am there as Netfred.
I’m waiting for Gowallas comment ;-)
-

I think the disappointment here is that with any small amount of foresight, the Gowalla Chiefs should have seen that Android was going to be growing in a hurry. In creating an app with such wide appeal, you really should have your hand on the pulse of the mobile smart phone market at-large if you truly want to leverage your investment. Android is clearly #2 on the charts with a bullet... get 'er done!
I’m annoyed, a bit.
-
Inappropriate? The mobile website doesn't cut it. They should've spent their time working on a native app then creating that crap.
I’m frustrated
