Photos of Spots
I'd like to suggest the idea of adding an option to upload photos of Spots during the commission process.

This is also on the to do list. We want to make sure that adding photos is "part of the game" which is one reason we didn't have it at launch, but you can be sure that'll you'll see something like this down the road.

As an aside, I've added Flickr integration to the Stamp Collector Planner on gowallatools.com (http://gowallatools.com/spots/) - any photos tagged with gowalla:spot=xxxxx (where xxxxx is the spot ID from the gowalla.com URL) will automatically be pulled into the spot popup.
I think this would work well on the Gowalla website and in the iPhone app, but it should be an extra that you click to see rather than a prominent feature (as I don't want to wait for images to load to be able to play the game!)

Like Kay, I like Gowalla without photos BUT I want this feature. I'd just like for photos to not be part of the main screen for a spot (at least not on my phone). Gowalla is a beautiful app and that's one of the main reasons I use it instead of Foursquare or anything else. I think photos being one of the initial things you see in a spot's page / screen would detract from the visual continuity and appeal.
But, I think photos would be very useful. If I want to go to a place someone's made a spot of and I've never been to before having a pic there might make it a lot easier to find. Also, there are some spots which would greatly benefit from seeing the inside of. For example: The Cute Shop is not easy to find (you have to find the door and read the stairs) and until you go there you have no idea how amazingly well it lives up to its name. Walls are covered with cute imported Japanese stuff...but without a pic there's no way to know.

Integration with Flickr and machine tags too:
gowalla:spot=xxxxx

Inappropriate?If twitpic is any indication, people using social apps like to share photos. If integrated nicely, I think this would make a great addition to the game.

machine tag integration would be swell -
:)
Especially since Flickr recently added foursquare machine tag integration: http://bit.ly/3zC8cb, see example here: http://tinyurl.com/ybw2v5e
I've also started tagging my milestones with gowalla:user=angelsk too :) -
Inappropriate?If you don't have any of the phones mentioned, can you use the GPS data on the photo to get your location as well?
-
I'm pretty sure that location information attached to a captured image on a mobile device is not the same as GPS data. It knows you took the picture of your favorite bar in an area relative to the closest tower. It doesn't know the actual geo-address where you are currently standing. -
Like Dr B says, most location data stored from camera phones not using GPS is not granular enough for us to determine your location from. -
Inappropriate?I like the idea of being able to add photos for a Spot but as part of the "game" they should only be viewable and addable at a checkin. Then the photo becomes part of the overall virtual geo-cache for the Spot. If photos are added then small video clips seems a logical extension to a Spot's virtual geo-cache.

Totally agree. Photos shouldn't be the first thing you see at a spot check-in but there should be a link off to view "spot" photos (or videos). And then you should be able to add some photos into the spot geo-cache. -
Inappropriate?It would seem that photos would be a good feature for the web side of things~ fun to look at while planning days out. Photos on the phone app ~ not so much, as they might cause things to hold up while loading.

your link in the post http://gowallatools.com/spots/ is broken. did you remove it or am I doing something wrong? -
Seems to be working ok - you may well have been trying it whilst I was pushing some updates.
There is also a Flickr bookmarklet available for viewing Flickr photos on the Gowalla site - http://gowallatools.com/web/flickr/ -
Bookmarklet's nifty but doesn't give you the satisfaction of having the photos always in the page. So I converted it to a UserScript for those of us with Greasemonkey installed. It does the same thing as the bookmarklet but without having to click anything. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/6... It just leverages the same code on gowallatools.com as the bookmarklet so, if that stops working this will too. -
Sweet! I'll add it to the site :) -
Added the greasemonkey but it isn't picking up machine tagged pictures? -
The greasemonkey script just calls out to the same back end as the bookmarklet. So, whatever you experience with it should be exactly the same as what you see with the bookmarklet, just automated. Which suggest that the bookmarklet isn't either, BUT any fixes to the bookmarklet will be fixes to the greasemonkey too :) anyone with questions / problems with the greasemonkey script should feel free to e-mail me at masukomi@masukomi.org but, like I said, it's really just automating what the bookmarklet does. Do you have an example spot that you know has machine tagged pics I can confirm this with? -
Yeah, i reported this to Ben yesterday, they work fine on the gowallatools map, but they're not working on the bookmarklet for some reason.
One of the ones i've added a machine tagged photo too is London zoo Reptile house: http://gowalla.com/spots/23645
Here's a couple of screen grabs to show.
GowallaTools

Bookmarklet

Show's them in a different order as wel it seems. My machine tagged pic is the last black and white one you can see. -
just confirmed, the bookmarklet never tells gowallatools what spot it's looking at, just the longitude and latitude (greasemonkey script does the same thing) so, the lack of support for machinetags appears to be intentional. I'll update the greasemonekey to pass along the info when the bookmarklet's back end supports it. -
Oops a little bug on my part - all fixed now though. The Flickr Bookmarklet now pulls in the machine tagged photos correctly! -
Inappropriate?It's being integrated as we speak! Found this in the Javascript source of Gowalla.
getFlickrImagesForSpot: function(spotURL) {
var spotId = spotURL.split('/')[2];
var url = "http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?tags=gowalla%3Aspot%3D" + spotId + "&lang=en-us&format=json&jsoncallback=?";
$.getJSON(url, function(data) {
$.each(data.items, function(i, item) {
$("").attr("src", item.media.m).appendTo("#flickr-images");
if ( i == 3 ) return false;
});
});
},
I’m thankful

Thanks! :-) -
Inappropriate?I would love to see an integration of photos like Brightkite does it. I'm an avid user of Brightkite but I love the gaming aspect of Gowalla -- If Gowalla added photo posting and a more seamless reply/comment system I'd drop Brightkite and use Gowalla 100% instantly.
I’m excited

Hi John, great reply! I think your right on the gaming aspect of Gowalla. It needs to get some more game features. The team is currently working on a lot of things like you may have noticed on gsfn.us so keep the ideas coming. -
As long as there is FB photo integration like BK has, I could drop BK completely. I like how BK has the option to post to a FB album and have the photo show up in my feed. That's the only reason I'm still using BK. -
Oh, and I kinda miss being able to comment on people's checkins like we can in BK, but that's off topic to this thread. -
Dunno if I would drop BK since I'm a Socnet whore... but John's suggestion would make for a VERY cool experience on Gowalla. it's fun now but being able to add photos, comments and to be able to communicate in app would make me use Gowalla so much more. -
yes yes yes - love the idea of posting to FB. flickr can be an option but i'd rather avoid posting to flickr. i can't get a second flickr account without registering for another yahoo ID and it's a pain. I'm keeping my first flickr account for non-personal stuff. -
Inappropriate?I like the idea of having the option to upload a photo when you check-in, much like on Twitter

I think that there could be trademark issues with that suggestion. -
