Super Items
I was thinking about another way items might be used in addition to vaulting, founding a spot, dropping, etc. And thought of something called "Super Items".
Basically, you could combine items together to get a super item, kinda like the way you can combine 2 Blueberry Jelly Bellies + 1 Buttered Popcorn Jelly Belly and get a Blueberry Muffin flavor :-)
So, I could combine a Tourbus + Tacos + Chips & Salsa and get a Taco Truck or something. I think this could add another dimension to items making me want to hang on to duplicates or continue to go after items once I filled my vault.

Inappropriate?Gosh, I don't know... these guys have so little experience with that sort of thing....
:) :) :)
I’m lying.

Inappropriate?Honestly, I don't much care for this idea.
With the availability of some items being so hard to come by (Keep Austin Weird shirt), I'm afraid it'd be another Skaar fiasco all over again. And as part of a recipe, that would just increase the level of frustration.
I'd prefer the focus of this particular game to remain on checking into spots and not so much on the items that work with those spots.
A current example: Think how frustrating it is for the folks outside the US that couldn't make the Crush It! book tour and therefore will ALWAYS have the "Missing (1)" tab on their items page. -
I'd listen to him, he's got a "degree" in Positology. -
I hear you. In some cases the items are kind of a differentiator from services like Brightkite, but I can see how emphasis on them might skew the focus from the goal of Gowalla. I will continue to use extra Coy fish to become a founder of places :-) -
Inappropriate?I like this idea... though that would probably need the ability to barter items as well, and that opens up to skewing the economy of items etc etc etc.
I’m need to sleep on this...

Inappropriate?I can't say we have plans to implement this, cos we don't at the moment. However, some version of what you're describing has been our our idea list since the beginning. We'll be keeping an eye on the responses here on Get Satisfaction.
Thanks for the good thoughts, all. Anyone else care to comment on this? -
Inappropriate?I love playing Packrat and wouldn't mind some of that migrating to Gowalla.
Right now I wouldn't mind the ability to combine 3 VERY common icons into something else. (Koi fish, americanos, cars)
I like the icons. I don't understand how Skaars fits into your example above, Dr. P. It's irrelevant to this particular topic, degree in Positology or not :-)
The icons give this game a treasure hunting aspect that I personally require. If I can make something with all those goofy Americanos I come across, all the better. -
The relevance is found in the concept of potentially hard to come-by items being used to create even rarer items. Yes, if they adopted such a mechanic and used only "common" items, the difficulty would be lessened. However, I haven't seen a Bluebonnet in some time, and that agrees with items not being as common as new items are released each week. Perhaps, then, the use of "Skaar" (or non-recipe cards from PackRat) wasn't the example to use, but rather, the Pop Idol, though it is not completely made irrelevant.
This isn't PackRat and while there are elements of PackRat present (vaulting items, items having issue numbers, the majority of items from existing PackRat sets), this is a location-based "game"/social tool with items as an ancillary aspect of that system—ala Alamofire's digital collectibles modus operandi. The line between the two games shouldn't be so blurred, in my opinion.
In fact, this might be a cue for Alamofire to discuss making yet another awesome Real World game based on PackRat? Perhaps not GPS based, and more akin to a TCG? -
Eh, I guess I don't mind "hard to come by" items... Keeps things interesting. I do, however, have an extreme dislike for "you aren't going to come across this item in your lifetime, and even if you do, you will never afford it" items. {ahem, whale, ahem}
What is TCG? -
Trading Card Game. Think Pokemon or Magic the Gathering, but I'd prefer if it was less battle-oriented and more trading oriented (like baseball cards that actually do something more than be a picture of a player with their stats).
I also dislike the items that are so rare, you had to be refreshing the store every second even when the set was freshly released, hehe. -
Inappropriate?I didn't post the first time I read this because I wanted to give it more thought. Now that I have, I don't think I like this idea. I think the game should stay more focused on what it's really about.

Inappropriate? What if you could redeem actual physical rewards (items) for the fake items?
-
Inappropriate?Oooo, Gowalla swag for select items... or maybe for completion of feats (urgh, trips!!). ;)
-
Inappropriate?I guess I see that as somewhat of the combo... if you have 1 of these 6 food items get a free meal somewhere.
Not suggesting that particularly but.. you get the gist. This is still playing off the combo idea. :)
I’m amused

Inappropriate?I'm not keen on this idea (even though it works well as an integral part of PackRat), but there is another part of PackRat that I think would work well.
As the items are from PackRat collections, I'd like to see pins for collecting a whole set. For example, there are a lot of items from the Toys Toys Toys collection at the moment and (looking at the items that were accidently(?) released early) I'd imagine the whole collection will be released eventually. So a pin of glory for vaulting all items from one set would be bobby dazzler.
