Tits!
Not to be a tit, or anything, but recently two questions were adjudicated:
http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/When_w...
and
http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/What_w...
The first was voided, and the second was settled as "Voided".
But the second question contained the very naughty term "tits" that led to the first question being voided as "offensive".
So first, are tits offensive? And if so, how offensive? Only offensive enough to cause questions to be voided 50% of the time? We need a long discussion about this, preferably with lots of insults, and maybe someone posting the dictionary definition of "tits" every third question or so. Then we need some rule changes that reflect the correct approach to offensive language and voiding. Most of all, we need a Tits Policy.

Inappropriate?Hi InfernalMachine, we were actually going to post a similar question to get the community's opinion on this issue once the leaderboard stuff had settled down. Thanks for raising it now though.
I must admit, I feel a bit of a tit for voiding the question so hastily. This doesn't necessarily set a precedent for guidance in future. Our concern is where to draw the line on breasts. I mean breast terminology. -
Inappropriate?it seemed strange to me that one would be voided but not the other...i was curious as to whether the people(was worded as multiple) who complained about the original Q had also wagered on the second one and in effect gamed it but i'm always accusing people of gaming so whatever....americans just have too many hangups about sex i think...i was just making fun of my friend the other day because she has no problem letting her 10 yo son watch i am legend, but god forbid that he should see a little skin

Inappropriate?I repeat my comment on the question here:
"The question has been voided for using the word t**ts. So, consequently, this one must also be voided because of the use of the word t**ts imo."
Quite paradox this case, isn't it? -
Inappropriate?oh, for those who didn't get my "clbuttic" comment:

(the google link in the article is spoiled meanwhile, unfortunately)

Inappropriate? There are many slang words that could offend, but ARE in the public lexicon of english slang words. Such as Ass, Prick, Suck, etc. as in : He's such as ass. Oh, that sucks! Stupid Prick!
I've heard these words used during CNN newscast. -
Inappropriate? One of the flags was mine... I found the tone of the question offensive. "Tits are cool"? That doesn't sound like a news story to me.
If it had been worded:
"So far QikStream has been pretty G-rated and profits have been low. More graphic content will likely increase their revenue -- will they do it?" I would have had absolutely no problem with it. But the way the question was asked was a little crass in my opinion. The second question was as Jerry mentioned just using a word in the english lexicon.
The use of the word in my opinion is not offensive, just the context. -
Inappropriate? As stated somewhere else before (by randburg on the Swayze topic): It is all about RESPECT.
So if you phrase a Question, you should take care of your wording. Don't use rough slang. In this way you show your respect to the reader at least.
I think the admins should be allowed to change the wording (without changing the sense) in a restrictive way. If slang is part of the question it should be quoted as such. -
Inappropriate?this question is going to be lactated to death. A question like "Will the waitresses from HOOTERS be on Deal or No Deal" would swing either way as people may/may not be offended by the word HOOTERS. As it was a charity event where HOOTERS donated $100 to Breast Cancer Research for every chicken wing that was eaten I figure anyone who complained about the word HOOTERS would have been a boob. I think this is one for tabliod section,as the questions can be more irrevent and if tactful, amusing

Inappropriate?Kind of like the recent Fark headline, "What kind of a-hole kills a 71-year-old realtor? James A. Hole, that's who (with mugshot)". The alleged perp's name really is James A. Hole. Is using his name offensive? Is the not-so-subtle innuendo in the headline regarding his name offensive?
I believe political correctness, and worries about the Nanny Police, is stifling public debate on many important topics. I believe firmly in the right of free speech, less so in the right of people who are offended (rather than damaged) to stifle the free speech of others.
So I might personally find the use of the word "tits" in a HD questions offensive, but that doesn't mean I believe the question should be voided. In the free world everyone has the right to free speech, and I have the right to be offended by their free speech.
If I find it offensive, I won't invite them to be my friend! -
Inappropriate? But are there words which shouldn't ever be used (at least directly) on HD questions and comments, and how does a user know where the line is drawn?
Next, even when we get past the last hurdle, are there ways of expression (rather than simply words) that cause the damage you mention? In particular, is it possible to ask a question or make a comment in a manner which has the result of making some portion of the HD community uncomfortable about their membership here? Sexism, racism and such are not only about free speech versus sensitivity, but also about inclusion. Does a question such as the initial QIK-related one, in the tone it takes towards female anatomy, have the intended or unintended consequence of discouraging female participants in HD from feeling equal citizens here? (For that matter, do my title and initial post in this thread do the same thing? I intended silliness, not offensiveness, but that doesn't mean I didn't cross a line.)
I'm going to guess/predict that this matters a lot to the Hubdub creators. I'll also guess that it matters to the HD community in general.
I credit meanderingsearcher for creating the second question, which brings attention to the whole set of issues that questions like the first raise. -
Inappropriate? If it isn't already obvious I'm pretty much a Libertarian, as such I feel that freedom of expression trumps freedom of taking offense. If you find some HubTopic offensive you have the right to avoid that topic, not wager on it, and even leave some (civil) comments about why you found it offensive.
You do _not_ have the right to impose your sense of morality on the entire Hubdub community.
I’m Libertarian ... and proud of it!
-
Inappropriate? This might be a completely american thing to say, but I feel that having the freedom of speech means that I am willing to let others say things in which I find offense. With that said there are exceptions for speech which would create hate or violence. I think we all know and attempt to use some common decency. However I believe that when things are mildly offensive we must do our best to understand our right to speak our opinions are born out of allowing others that same right.
