Add IM with Sandy
I'd really like to be able to interact with Sandy outside of email.
The new Twitter integration is nifty, but Twitter is rather broadcasty, so a single mis-type can share your remember with the whole world.
I'd love to see Sandy be able to interact as a chatbot thru some IM service or other. Jabber seems like a good OSS option, but any of the popular services (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, etc.) would also be helpful.

Hi folks,
Somehow this thread escaped my attention -- sorry about that!
We've had a mind to have Sandy be available wherever you might be (locale, modality, etc) since the beginning. And we're progressing as quickly and properly as we can toward that goal. And so I am absolutely gratified to see such a show of interest for chatting with Sandy by IM!
We've a few things we need to get finished before we can afford the time to spend on an API or IM interface, but all those smiley faces (as strangely similar as they all seem ;-) are just the sort of encouragement we love.
Best,
Rael

Right - the IM should not depend on Twitter. Twitter isn't dependable, so if I'm going to depend on Sandy I need a better way of interacting with her. The web interface is nice, but it's not going to integrate with any type of smooth consistent daily workflow. IM solves all those problems and it's not very hard to set up. I want to use Sandy on a daily basis for everything, but I need either a nearly-flawless twitter or IM to make that happen.

I agree. IM is the natural command-line for interfacing with Sandy. Adding IM access makes a LOT of sense.

I would also like this in combination with perhaps a general api so that it can integrate with other things, like for example quicksilver in a somewhat similar way it is done for stikkit.

I am in Pidgin all day long and being able to send Sany 'remind...' message and Sandy respond would be a killer app for me! Imified reminder etc is ok, but far too many menus and no natural language support makes it clunky and not natural to use - an app like this should be unobtrusive! Imified and Sandy - what a combination! Also, I use a webmail clients which means I don't get audio notifications etc - this is a *must* with a reminder app as I try not to check email too frequently as I spend the day reacting rather than on focused work (depends on your job I guess) - using an IM client means you get the notification options out of the box. Go girl!

Inappropriate?I would like this as well. I initially assumed that you COULD do this, and was confused when I couldn't find out how to. It shouldn't be too hard (jabber is an open protocol and Google chat speaks it among others), and it would be very useful for me. Email and even Twitter are relatively high-latency mediums for what is essentially a command-line application. Right now I am hackishly using my IM client to follow my twitter stream which follows Sandy, but that's getting old fast, as it takes 30+ seconds for sandy to respond to new reminders.

I’m hopeful this can be done
-
Inappropriate?+1 for Jabber integration - it would make all the difference for my usage of Sandy
I’m really looking forward to this
-
Inappropriate? This would be a huge benefit. Email feels a little heavyweight for Sandy, and if I could simply IM her with my updates, and even better, RECEIVE IM REMINDERS from her if she saw me available, that would be a huge win.
I’m impatiently waiting...
-
Inappropriate? While a little slow, talking to Sandy through Twitter isnt so bad. you just have to add the Twitter app to Sandy, then ad the twitter IM name to your messenger. to "talk" to sandy send her a direct message.
d s whatever you want to send to her. d means direct message, s is sandy's short name on twitter. I usually get my todos with sandy through twitter.
d s lookup @todo
It works while we wait for Sandy to truely get online!
I’m excited about Sandy!

Inappropriate?Great tip. Thanks!
-
Inappropriate?the twitter version of this is a poor substitute. Here are a few of the problems:
* numbering appears to be inconsistent. I have twice asked for a numbered item to be deleted and it took out the wrong one.
* d s l @todo often only returns one item, the rest get emailed
* asking for stuff on twitter and getting it by email only, or email as well (I've turned off all email to try to only use twitter, but I still get an email for every message I send via twitter)
* sandy seems to handle email parsing a little better. I've got to add "me to" to use twitter, as in remind me to take out the trash works over twitter, remind take out the trash gets inconsistent results. -
Inappropriate?PLEEEAAAAASSSSEEE!!
I understand doing stuff like lists in IM might get tricky. But if I could just have single-line IM access to Sandy. I'd be set.
r to get film developed
r haircut appt tue 3pm
is usually all that i'm ever about. Single line access should be VERY EASY to set up. Heck, I could do it with a perl script on my own server, but I'd rather have something official from Sandy herself. -
Inappropriate?I assumed this was possible and found this page by googling 'sandy via im'... it's such a natural way to interface with Sandy (considering it's basically a command line service, and IM could be thought of as basically telnet)
AIM's "bots" do quite a bit via IM including lists and such, Gizmo does even more, allowing you to top up your account and manage account settings via IM
What i really care about is INBOUND... ie: when it's time to remind me about something, IM it to me.
Any of AIM/MSN/Jabber/Google Talk/Skype/Yahoo would be fine.. or all of them would be even better :)
update: I'm a PHP guy, and came across this... http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_... for php->aim.. coupled with some basic IMAP_open calls and at least i can have inbound sandy mail sent out via AIM!
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate?Hi William et al,
Have you given Sandy's twitterization a whirl? While we're definitely considering where to put IM in our priority list, I talk to Sandy via Twitter day in and day out (both sending her things to remember and receiving reminders on my desktop through AIM/Jabber).
Check out http://iwantsandy.com/help/twitter for details on twittering to Sandy and http://iwantsandy.com/help/reminders for info on specifying how Sandy remind you (tag things as @twitter to have her just remind you via Twitter; or turn off email and SMS reminders, Twitter reminders on, and she'll remind you only via Twitter).

Inappropriate? Thanks for this.. subsequent to your reply I've investigated twitter further..
Seems there are twitter firefox plugins that might be somewhat useful until proper IM support arrives.
Most of the plugins want to use the sidebar where one would normally keep bookmark / jajah /etc panels,
but 'twitterfox' (http://www.naan.net/trac/wiki/TwitterFox ) hides in the status bar as a little icon, pops up when you get new 'tweets' and allows you to post 'tweets' through firefox.. whist not gizmo or trillian, i do have FF open most of the day so this may be a suitable alternative.
I'm trying this out now to see if it's a suitable bridge fix until proper IM is launched for sandy.
I’m hopeful

Inappropriate?actually, twitter talks to google talk, which talks to jabber, which talks to my IM client, so I now have sandy via im!
(setup sandy for twitter, then setup twitter for IM to your existing or new google talk account, then confirm your multi-im client [trillian etc] is connected to your google talk account)
cool!
I’m hurrah!

Inappropriate? While twitter-over-IM works all right, and is great for compulsive (is there another kind?) twitterers (twits?), it doesn't quite fit into the "corporate" world. However, IM (think Windows Live Communication Server) is often a key component of corporate life.
Jabber is a nice XML-based open standard, and has components to hook into all the major IM services. While I'm sure it's not trivial to add IM, at least there's a good starting point to work from.
I’m still hopeful!

Inappropriate?Okay,
a) this suggestion is untested, and
b) it's a terrible kludge.. and...
c) Sandy implementing IM is obviously the optimal solution, but...
Jabber as you pointed out provides modules to handle MSN/AIM/Y!/etc legacy support..
Jabber's method for doing this is basically all contacts become [user-on-other-network]@[jabber-legacy-gateway]... so joecool@hotmail.com on the MSNIM network becomes JoeCool%hotmail.com@msn.jabbernet.dk if you're registered with jabbernet.dk.
So.. twitter supports any jabber client (as far as I know.. I say this because when I put in my Gizmo login data into twitter, it did the right thing, and Gizmo is Jabber-powered, ergo twitter supports jabber I assume)
Therefore, putting a registered [extIMuser]@[jabbergateway] into twitters IM settings might just cause you to get communications via MSN/Y!/AIM.
But, it's extremely non-optimal, and sandy coming to our rescue would be much more preferable.
Just my 2c.. it's been a 18 hour day and this is off the top of my head, but I figured it couldn't hurt to mention my thoughts. -
Inappropriate?To be fair to Sandy,
they've obviously worked hard and it's a great product which is saving me tons of time.. I previously used Sunday (getsunday.com), which is a $30/month service that gets you 30 requests.. live people etc, but i found that 95% of what I used them for ended up being handled by Sandy.. if sandy offered either of the following i'd be super happy, heck i'd happily pay $15 a month and call it a steal for the extra services..
1) IM
2) TTS phone calls for reminders so I can move my homebrew solution off my asterisk server and avoid some, ahem, glitches.. (9am call to summarize the day translated from Sandy's email, and the TTS starts reading sandys "you have time to read comics today!" message on my cell speakerphone after I've said I have a busy day planned is a little.. awkward if other people are around
Anyhow.. off to bed.

Inappropriate?IM would be awesome...plus on the iPhone when I twitter Sandy "d s etc..." the iPhone always suggests "d a." So, I worry about mistelling whomever "a" is on twitter (if anyone).
-
Inappropriate?Just a quick 'bump' to see if there is any more info about this functionality.
-
Inappropriate? There are some round-about ways to accomplish this via Twitter, but I'd definitely love to have this as a native feature. It just seems natural to "ping" your assistant. Plus, it mitigates the risk of accidentally broadcasting to the world "Remember to buy [insert embarrassing item here]".
I'm trying to remember life before Sandy, but am not much enjoying the memories...

I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I too hope to see Sandy talking to me directly through Jabber...I think it would be far more efficient than through email.
-
Inappropriate?I'd really like to be able to use AIM since that seems to be more reliable than Twitter. Can we get a very general/rough guess on when this could happen?
-
Inappropriate?I would enjoy a native MSN Sandy. I've already got her on Jabber via Twitter, and IMified when the Twitter bot is down; but the interfaces aren't nice and sandy (uh, dandy) and, friends on Windows do not usually have Jabber clients installed but always an MSN client. I find IM to be the quickest way to interact with Sandy so it'd be neat to have when borrowing a computer.
Also, Sandy doesn't seem to respond to lookups via Twitter. That is something which would be absolutely valuable to access via IM.
Update: internally it could of course be a Jabber client employing xmpp transports - so long I can add Sandy on MSN without resorting to Jabber (or otherwise) myself. I tend to avoid installing programs on other folks' computers.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I would vote for native XMPP (jabber -- gtalk, etc)

Inappropriate?Well, I thought I'd dig this up again. Twitter was Sandy's IM interface for a while, and now it's been gone for over a month.
I'm not going to ask for Sandy to have her own IM stuff done this week (although I wouldn't complain if she did). But I would like to know if this is still a possibility.
I’m not a happy face.
