pswebclient crashes when adding photos
As soon as the selected image thumbnails appear in the photosynth window, it crashes; gives me a debug button and error info about pswebclient.exe. I have tried a clean reinstall of the program, but still doesn't work. I had no problems until I ran the recent photosynth update.

Good news everyone, the fix for this issue is on the site now. We're not automatically upgrading everyone since the issue is limited to a subset of users. But since it looks like everyone on this thread suffers from the issue, here's how you can get the fix:
(1) Close all your browser windows as well as the synther (if you have it running).
(2) Uninstall the current version of the client. To do this, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. In the window that comes up, scroll down and select Photosynth 2.0.1519.16, then click the remove button.
(3) Browse to http://photosynth.net, and view a synth, you'll get prompted to install the new version.
Thanks to everyone for the feedback on this, let us know how it goes!

Try the work around I proposed below. We're working on a fix. Thanks. -
Inappropriate?do you have the log file in %tmp%\photosynther\synthname.log; if so can you post the contents of the log file
thanks. -
I don't have a directory called like you say. Can you explain me where normally this directory must be set ???
I want notice that problem is only due to the last update. Before all was all right -
I have these logs from before the update, with synths that work fine, but no recent attempts even get to the point of producing the log. the file that the error report generates is: 7e2d_appcompat.txt in %tmp% here're the contents of that:

Thanks for the info here are some more questions
What OS are on?
When the thumbnails are shown in the list view box after the add dialog closes , do they all load or do some stay showing a red x icon?
Does the crash happen immediately when you close add the files or after hitting "synth" button? -
running windows xp sp3. as soon as I click "open" to add the photos, thumbnails all appear... no red x icons, then the pswebclient.exe crash happens.
Exception Information (at top of error report contents):
Code: 0xc000001d Flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0000...000 Address: 0x000...00419137
I can get more for you out of here, if it helps. -
ok so it's sp2 (I thought I had installed 3, but the system info says otherwise)
CPU is Amd athlon XP2800+ 2.08GHz; 2GB ram; radeon 9550 vid card.
running comodo av/fw... -
Can you try with different set of images, like the sample photos in C:\Users\Public\Pictures\Sample Pictures\ ? -
So, I restored my system to before the photosynth upgrade, ran windows update which included sp3. redid the ps upgrade and still the problem is present, using the sample images has the same result. Thank you guys for checking this out for us-let me know if there's anything more I can do to help. -
Inappropriate? What hardware and OS are you using? The log file created when you hit synth in %TMP%\Photosynther\ , the location of %TMP% depends on the user name that you're logged in with; it's an enviromental varible defined by windows.
-
I don't have a directory called Photosynther on my computer. I have take a look in all my hard disk. The crash happen at the end of the generation of all the thumbnails on my pc. I think you can take a look to the code updates from the last version to the current one and see what can happen... it can point out something -
If you input "%TMP%\Photosynther\" in the explore, it doesn't open any folder?
Does the crash happen before or after you hit the "synth" button? Thanks! -
all the directory make photosynth crash. Input from C:/, My images..., on other disk too....
Step to reproduce, Log in, Add Photos, choose a dataset, the thumbnail appear and the application crash....
I cannot do other thing.
It's possible it's XP SP2 related, or .net framework... update ??? -
Inappropriate?I have this problem too when I hit the synth button I get the debug error as well! Sucks for a first time user!
I’m frustrated

Hi Dani, could you also tell us what's your OS and hardware? Thanks! -
I am running XP SP2 Dell Precision 370 -
Dani, could you try the solution Peter posted, by installing WIC on your sp2 machine? -
Bravo Bravo.... the solution Peter posted worked! Thanks Peter! Thanks Mr. Hou! -
Inappropriate?Could you please try synth some other photos (e.g. Windows sample images) and see whether it still crashes? This would help us isolate the source the crash. Thanks.
-
Tested. I get the same response on both sets of photos as above:
Error Signature:
AppName: pswebclient.exe AppVer: 2.0.1519.13 ModName: seadragon.dll
ModVer: 1.1.0.12998 Offset: 0011ce18 -
Inappropriate?hey, this is the log file for my synth. I have tried a lot of different photos and they all crash after i hit synth. I have a PC.

eaglemagic, are you also using XPSP2? If so, could you try the solution Peter posted? -
Inappropriate?Hi,
Thanks for helping answer all my questions; I think we've found the cause of this issue.
There are two different image conversion libraries we use, it appears there's a regression in how we use the older image conversion library on xp sp2. Windows xp sp3 and later all ship with WIC , a newer image conversion library that supports more options.
A work around is to install wic on your xp sp2 machine:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/de...
It is a 1.2 mb download.
We're working on a fix that won't require this additional download but if you want to try the workaround go for it.
Thanks

For me it does'nt fix the problem. The application crash exactly at the same point. Does it require that I restart my computer ? -
Adoniseagle and Polln8r, the crashes you have seen are different from others, since you get crashes even before hitting synth button. We are still working on investigating this issue. -
Inappropriate?ya, you guys are like the best support people I've ever seen! You respond fast and are so smart you know EVERYTHING! Thanks the WIC worked for the XP sp2 work around.
I’m Very Happy
-
Inappropriate?Hi Polln8r and Adoniseagle,
We have found the solution to fix the crash that happens after clicking the synth button. But the crashes you guys got are after adding photos and before click the synth button. We want to address this issue as well but we couldn't reproduce it on our xpsp2 machines. It would be great if you could help us by running some debugging tool, dump a stack trace file and send it to us to diagonalize it. If you would like to help, please send me an email at: dahou@microsoft.com. I will send you some simple instructions, which just requires one install and several clicks. We really appreciate your help in advance. -
Inappropriate?Hi Dan,
I did run windows update to SP3, but have the same bug. email is on the way.
perhaps it's the AMD CPU.
I’m thankful for all the help.
-
Inappropriate?I haven't updated to sp3 yet, but I have an AMD CPU and my crash occurs immediately after the photos are added and before the synth button is clicked.

I am having the same problem as several other people. I tried using two different machines with different brands of CPUs & video cards, but still had the same problem.
I’m upset

Inappropriate?I am having the same problem as Polln8r and am running SP3. Is there anything I can do to help debug this problem? Thanks.

I think it had to do with my AMD AthlonXP CPU, they emailed me with a few files to replace in the ps directory. I would email Dan at the address a few replies up.
Hope it works out. -
Inappropriate? We have fixed this crash issue with the help from Polln8r and some other users (thank you very much!!). The cause of the crash is the cpu your machine is running on doesn't support SSE2 instruction set. We are working on making an updated version of PSWebClient avalible for you, who are experiencing the same crash, to upgrade as soon as possible.
