Inappropriate?I'd settle for the sparse 3d points. I can probably write something up to generate a mesh out of that. Then you'd have to use your skills to make it into a useful model, but it would be a start.
Seeing as how they're generating the points, I don't see why they're not mapping the images as textures and letting you navigate as if it were a first person shooter game. I think that kind of navigation would make more sense.
I’m interested

Inappropriate?would be a cool thing to go furter but it's an idea they should work out when the current photosynt works perfect...
-
Inappropriate? There are lots of photo's there already. Can they be used to create the textures? I want to see a shaded non textured version also. Another good reason to have a 3rd party exe instead of though the web. We can use OpenGL and DX.
I’m hopefull

Inappropriate?sure, it's a very interesting and natural idea to generate mesh from point cloud and do texture mapping. But this release is to show us a new way to orgnize their photos (spatially!), while still preserving the originality of photos.
Recreate a real 3D scene directly instead of point cloud would be very attractive, but would be far less robust especially when the point cloud is really sparse or noisy. Benji is right, then you have to manually edit it till it's usable. -
Yes, good point, but it would save a lot of time and might make for a more interactive experience- I get really annoyed in point cloud view because the 'Halo' only appears from certain positions.
Actually, going off-topic, why not add some more useable navigation controls for pointclouds? -
Inappropriate?Could you just beef up the point cloud (more points) and manage performance issues with max point density setting. (originally mentioned here) http://getsatisfaction.com/livelabs/t... points could be faded or trimmed it they seem wrong as well.

Inappropriate?Well, even if some tweaking is needed, I still like the idea of creating 3D meshes, especially with textures. I can see lots of potential applications for this technology if I can take many pictures of an object and easily turn it into a 3D model with a little bit of effort.
Right now other similar software is very expensive. I've been looking for a long time for something that does something like this that anybody on a budget can use.
I’m hopeful

There is other software that can actually convert images into 3D models? What are some of them? -
Yes- next engine makes some software for about 1,000 EU (1,500 US), but you need their scanner to take the photos.

Inappropriate? It is a really great idea. I think this could make our video games truly amazing!

Inappropriate? This would make photosynth more than just a toy- I love the idea. 3D scanners would be history!
I’m excited
