Why is word 2008 for Mac quitting unexpectedly when I open it?
I have microsoft office 2008 for my MacBook. Just recently when I go to open word (and only word - excel opens fine) I get a message that says the application quit unexpectedly. I then click relaunch and the same thing happens. This repeats until I get the option to reset and relaunch. I click that and then the cycle begins again. All updates have been run and I have no idea what to do next.

Inappropriate?Has this been happening ever since you installed Office, or is it a development that came about after you installed it and had been using it for some time?
Have you done anything like Xslimmer or Monolingual on your Mac?

Inappropriate?I am having the same issue. However, I continue to click relaunch, and the same thing happens over and over again. So, I cannot print anything. How can the problem be resolved?

Inappropriate?Has this been happening ever since you installed Office, or is it a development that came about some time later? Are you up-to-date with all of the service packs? Word 2008 is currently at 12.1.5. Have you done anything like move Word from its home in your Applications folder, or maybe run an application like Xslimmer or Monolingual?

Hi Nadyne - thanks for responding. Actually, I was mistaken; the version of Office that I have is 2004 so I have read your suggested solution below for Mulligan, to call technical support. I noticed the issue after Leopard was installed on my Mac due to my hard drive crashing. I also uninstalled Office, along with my printer software and reinstalled both, and still encounter the issue. So, I will give tech support a call. -
Inappropriate? Here is my idea: Save all your data from your hard drive somewhere, delete Microsoft Office (or just word) and reinstall it. It was the only thing that solved my problems with Word and Powerpoint. Also I recognized that these programs slowed down over the time, so after two years I had it reinstalled and now everything works fine again.

Inappropriate?I have the same problem, except mine is with Office 2004. Every MS app quits upon starting, including updaters.
I've re-installed Office – no success.
I've removed the Microsoft user data folder – no go
Any other ideas?
OSX 10.5.6 on a MBP-17 with all other apps running fine!

Inappropriate?Mulligan - What error message do you get when your application quits?
You're probably best off by calling or emailing technical support. If you purchased your copy of Office 2004 at a retail outlet, you get two free calls to tech support. (This is also true for Office 2008.) Go to Microsoft support, select "other solution centers", then select "more Office products", and then "Office 2004 for Mac". Then you can click on the "get help now" link on the right side of the page, which will give you the correct email address and phone number at which you can contact support. -
My issues is exactly the same. I am going to call tech support tomorrow so will post on here the suggested fix :) ....if they can fix it! -
Inappropriate?I figured it out! :)
See, I got a Leopard upgrade, and took advantage of the folders in the app bar thing. I put all the Microsofts except Entourage (my email program) into the folder. All Microsoft apps except Entourage had this problem! Later, I tried moving Word back to the Microsoft Office folder and it works now. Try this.
I’m happy cause i figured it out!!!
