ING Direct account cannot be added!
I've been trying to add my ING direct savings account for two days and no luck. I think I spent at least good chunk of my time trying to figure out what is wrong with it.

ING is blocking all third parties at the moment due to apparent load issues on their side. This latest issue began about November 1. I have been in contact with ING and our data provider who is attempting on a workaround until ING allows access again. Stay tuned, we're doing all we can on our end.

Inappropriate?Hi ai,
We are aware of add account problems with ING Direct due to multi-factor authentication changes made on their site. We hope to have a status update from our data provider within the next 48 hours. Sorry for the frustration this has caused you. -
Inappropriate?Any update from Mint yet on this problem?
-
Inappropriate?Same issues with ING. Just re-entered my login information in Mint for the third time since I began using Mint three days ago. Mint connects, but isn't able to stay connected. Very frustrating. (BTW - I'm testing out a few different personal finance online apps. Quicken Online doesn't seem to have this problem with ING.)
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? It's worked for me for a few weeks now. Looks like Mint updated the security questions to match the ones on the ING website (My Info > Login Options) -- that was the problem I was having.
Be sure the questions and answers you have in your Mint account setup exactly match those on the ING website. You only need five security questions, but you can have up to 10. If you only have five set up in ING then only answer five in Mint; leave the last five answer slots blank.
The UI of the ING page where you can change your security questions is a bit goofy. After you change your questions or answers, make sure you click the "Change" button next to them, not the "Done" button at the bottom of the page (only click "Done" after you click the "Change" button).
Here is some more information about people having these same issues. Many of them were able to connect.
http://forums.mint.com/showthread.php... -
Inappropriate?Again having problems with setting up ING account. The security questions do not match. I submitted a direct complaint to Mint but only received an automated message telling me to wait for a real response. I am frustrated because I use my ING account frequently.
I’m argghhh
-
Inappropriate? For the life of me I cannot add ING account to Mint, I am definitely using the right questions and answers but it still comes back as Username or password invalid...
BTW, some questions might look like they match, but in fact are different:
ING - "What year was your father born?"
Mint - "In what year was your father born?"
Could that be the problem?
Thanks!
-
Inappropriate?Hi ING Minters,
We see fairly good success rates with adding ING so all we can suggest is to make sure you have the questions and answers in the exact same order as they are recorded at the ING banking site. In some cases, you may have to contact ING customer service to verify this order. -
I called them and they told me that the order of the security questions is random. -
After trying both customer number and Saver ID, answering all 5 questions in order (and being case sensitive) several times, and e-mailing Mint for help with this setup (no solution offered yet), I called ING customer service and they verified that the order that their security questions are presented is random, and that they may only ask 2 of the questions that we've provided answers for at a time. I've recently input my ING security questions, so verifying them was just going through the motions. The service rep at ING said that he'd had calls from a couple of other Mint users with this problem, and took note of the URL for this page to send to ING's web division. I was told they'd e-mail me with their assessment. -
Inappropriate?I have verified the order and made sure the questions looks EXACTLY the same. Answers were simply copied. I am no longer getting authentication errors, but it simply is saying "Temporary issue connecting" all the time, so, ultimately, this is not working...
-
Inappropriate? After retrying over 10 times it finally connected!
-
Yeah, I have to do this everyday. If there was something wrong it shouldn't let me in at all, but it lets me in "sometimes". And regarding the order of the questions that they told us must be correct, the order changes every time I login. -
Inappropriate? How's that possible? The questions DO NOT MATCH. You need to answer 5 from ING Direct but Mint only has 4 matching ones.
Mint has these 4 already. The wording might be slightly different so you might want to just go thru and update them all:
- What is your mother's middle name?
- What year did you graduate High School?
- In what town was your first job?
- What year was your father born?
Mint.com, please add to Mint these other questions:
- What was your childhood nickname?
- What school did you attend for sixth grade?
- What was the first name of your childhood best friend?
- Where did you go on your honeymoon?
- What color was your first vehicle?
- What was the make (Chevy, Ford, Honda, etc) of your first vehicle?
I've spent hours on this already. Please Please help us!

Inappropriate?Hi becca x,
Those six questions are already offered in the dropdown for each challenge. We list a total of 28 challenge questions for ING Direct - Bank. Are you referring to ING Direct - Bank or some other ING account type?
To anyone having problems with the challenge question order,
Regarding the ING customer service response, yes their challenge questions are presented at random when challenged on the ING Direct site. There are usually two questions when challenged at ING Direct - Bank. However, ING customer service should be able to verify the order of the five questions when you initially signed up for ING Direct online banking site. These are the five challenge questions you need to enter in Mint.com. You only need to select and answer these five.
Lastly, we will be making enhancements in several weeks that should simplify these sometimes painful issues with ING Direct.
Hope this helps. Please post back if you continue to have problems. -
With apologies to Mint (as I know you're doing your best to provide what I've seen to be an otherwise great service), this is the response regarding this issue that I got from ING:
"I understand you recently had an issue with trying to connect to our website using mint.com. The online service that mint.com offers is commonly referred to as an account aggregator service. ING Direct does not support third party services to access your account information which is why you may have had difficulties with establishing a connection on the third party's website.
The security of your information is very important to us and we take several measures to ensure your data receives the utmost protection. Once your personal information leaves ING DIRECT, we have no control over your information or how it is used by third parties. Because we have no way of monitoring how account aggregators address security, privacy, or the use of cookies we are unable to support the use of these services.
To best protect your personal information and your funds, we recommend that you do not share your personal information (including your Customer Number and PIN) with any third party.
Thank You,
Dave
CST Team
ING DIRECT, USA"
I do know to expect that there are somewhat insecure elements to using a service like Mint, and I hope you do find ways to simplify and resolve these log-in and security issues. If you do, please respond to this post and I'll be happy to look into using Mint in the future. -
So you are saying that they keep on file the original five questions when the account was opened? The reason I ask is because I have changed the questions many times over since opening the account 4 years ago.
Thanks for your help,
Wade -
I can't speak to that. I'm just sharing my experience and the communication I got from ING. The Mint staff are best able to answer your technical question. It is an interesting question, though. -
Hey JGB, I was trying to post a reply to stephen, I should have made that clear. -
Inappropriate?I know I have the right questions and answers, but when I try to add ING it fails to authenticate. The error I get is "temporary issue connecting." I've tried at all hours of the day and never gotten through adding ING.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I just managed to link my account with ING Direct. It took all day! I changed my 5 questions and then add those same 5 in order to my mint account. After more tries than I can count, it finally connected.
Good luck! -
Inappropriate?Just like JGB had stated previously, ING Direct does not support account aggregators strictly for security reasons. It is a security breach to have a third party accessing your information and we do our best to keep that information safe. As an employee of ING Direct, I get a lot of responses from customers claiming that they are having this issue. We are not going to set our security guard down to let a website like Mint.com access customers information. The same goes with programs like Microsoft Money and Quicken. If you need information from your account downloaded into a program such as Quicken or Microsoft Money, there is a place you can do so on our website. This is not a reflection of Mint.com or any other account aggregators, they may be great programs, but its just not a risk ING Direct is willing to take.
In response to Stephen's post, we actually cannot verify the order in which the questions were set up. When a customer accesses their account on ingdirect.com, the website scrambles the questions and randomly asks 2 of 5 you are required to set up when going online with ING Direct. Even when you call us, it still does not show the exact order in which you set them up. All these are security measures we've taken to ensure our customers information remains safe and secure.
And last but certainly not least, since we became a bank in the US in 2000, we have not yet had a security breach in our security and we intend to keep it that way =P.

Inappropriate? We have enabled dynamic multi-factor authentication support for ING Direct. ING Direct is still blocking Mint most of the day and intermittently but we have seen some improvement in connectivity. We appreciate ING's stance and we understand their brand. We spoke with ING directly several weeks ago and we look forward to their read only PIN solution they are working on for third parties such as Mint.com.

Inappropriate?Someone else gaining access to your account at ING Direct is not "your choice" so we are not allowing other 3rd parties to do it. If someone gains access to your account online, they have breached our security on our website and compromised not only your information but the banks as well. Its just not a risk that the bank as a whole is willing to take. I understand your situation, but it seems irrational to leave an institution that you otherwise probably had no problems with and probably gave you more (ie: better customer service, rates etc) than your local bank. Tell me another bank thats open 7 days a week 8 am to 8 pm ALL time zones across the US? They are few and far between if any other than us.
-
Inappropriate?Calling your would be customers irrational is hardly good customer service, and it was replies like this to my concerns on this topic that prompted me to leave. Online account aggregation is key to how I manage my finances; your being open all the time is not. If you choose to keep me from using services like Mint you can, just as I can choose to move my money to a bank that lets me manage my finances in a way that works for me. But don't expect me to stay with a bank that doesn't work for me, let alone one whose employees seem to think I'm irrational. But thanks anyway.

Inappropriate?ING works fine for me in Mint, not sure who called customers irrational....
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Kate, please dont take it as taking a shot at you. If ING Direct was giving you problems on Mint.com and you like to handle your finances that way, thats perfectly up to you. I dont expect people to be at ING Direct if it does not work for them. If you choose to move your money to an institution that allows you to use account aggregation, that's completely up to you and we are always there if you wish to return to us in the future. Our goal is to help you with your finances and help you save money, not to make it a hassle. I apologize if Mint was giving you trouble, but its not something that an ING Direct employee can directly help you with. Stephen had mentioned that they were working with Mint to help customers such as yourself to be able to add your ING Direct account a little more easily. The same problems happen with our customers that use Quicken and Microsoft money. ING Direct employees are not trained to handle such problems. We are experts on our website and programs, not other companies.
-
Inappropriate?Justen, I'm confused. Is ING against account aggregation, as you said a few days ago? "ING Direct does not support account aggregators strictly for security reasons. It is a security breach to have a third party accessing your information and we do our best to keep that information safe. As an employee of ING Direct, I get a lot of responses from customers claiming that they are having this issue. We are not going to set our security guard down to let a website like Mint.com access customers information."
Or are you "working with Mint to help customers such as yourself to be able to add your ING Direct account a little more easily. "
I have heard a few people say, oh we're working on this issue, but my letters and emails to the higher ups at ING have all received responses indicating that ING is actively working against letting 3rd parties such as Mint into their systems. So let's not pretend otherwise or act as if Mint is the one giving us trouble. ING is the issue here. -
Inappropriate?First of all, I am not stating that mint is the problem.
I have not heard of anything, but Stephen, an employee of Mint.com stated above that apparently they were working with ING. To that, I really have no response. I am not an executive of ING, nor do i make those decisions. What we are told is that no, ING Direct does not support account aggregation for security reasons. Personally I have nothing against Mint.com nor anyone who uses it. If thats how you like to do your finances, thats perfectly fine. As of right now, 3rd parties such as Mint.com is not supported by ING. To address one more thing, ING is not the "issue". Do not blame the company because it will not let you use another program/company to access your information. We have our policies set for a reason and they seem to have worked so far. This set up didnt work for you and again, thats fine, we weren't the bank for you. If you decide to join us again in the future, we would be more than happy to assist you.
Even programs like Quicken (which is supported by ING Direct) will not allow it to pull the information from our site. Instead, you must log in as you always would and download every account separately. There are other alternatives to using account aggregation with us, you just chose Mint.com which is not supported. -
Inappropriate?Okay, but I don't really care how you personally feel about Mint; I care about ING's stance towards them. The original question on this page was about being unable to add ING on mint. The original poster, and others who may have this problem, have the right to know that this is not something Mint can just fix, because ING is actually trying to block Mint and others like them. Because Mint is not supported by ING, as you say, then I think they are to blame in the original poster's problem. Sure, there are other alternatives, but that was not the original poster's concern. The original poster wanted to know how to make ING work with Mint, and they should know that's something ING doesn't want to happen.
Honestly, you've turned me off from ING way more than my replies from the higher ups when they brushed off my concerns about lack of support for account aggregation, just because you've been so argumentative and determined to try to show ING in a good light.
As long as ING does not support account aggregation, they are not the bank for me, and they are probably not the bank for many users who are excited and serious about using services like Mint to manage their finances. And that's my closing argument. :P
-
Inappropriate?I stated the original poster's answer in my first post and touchè to your last paragraph.
-
Justin, if you're an employee of ING Direct, I suggest you shut up and stop posting replies on here. You're ruining ING's reputation, and your lack of customer service ability is astounding. Stick to writing code or whatnot, and ask someone else to do the PR. -
Inappropriate? At ING DIRECT, we’ve always been focused on providing Customers with simple ways to safely and securely save their money. As Justen said, security is one of our main priorities. Mint and other third-party account aggregators are very cool tools. They have their users’ best interest at heart and ING DIRECT does too. And as Stephen pointed out, we’re working closely with Mint and other aggregators on a unique solution that will deliver a good balance between Customer security and account access. We hope to have a resolution by the end of the year that will allow ING DIRECT Customers to use Mint and other aggregators to view their accounts without revealing sensitive personal information.
We understand both sides of this issue and are working quickly toward a resolution that will be good for all parties. Once a plan is finalized, we’ll share details of the resolution on this blog and others.

Inappropriate? Thanks for stepping in on this Robert.
I'm a little late to the debate, though I've been frustrated with this very issue and agree 100% with Kate's position. I'm a customer of ING as well, and would also consider taking my money elsewhere if a solution to this problem (because that's what it really is in the customer's eyes) is not found soon.
The arrogance of Justen's replies was just confirming that to be a sound decision.
For now, I'll just wait and see. Sometimes my account updates correctly in Mint, but sometimes now. It's been unable to update for 3 days now...
I’m impatient for a resolution
-
Inappropriate?God, I love Mint. But ING Direct has worn out its welcome with me. I'm already fed up with them due to the extremely poor service provided by them since they bought NetBank (which we LOVED) and this is the final nail in the coffin. If this doesn't get resolved I'm closing my ING Direct account.
I’m incredulous
-
Inappropriate? And wouldn't you know it. The latest emails I've been sending to ING about this issue are bouncing from sales@ingdirect.com. Great job, guys.
-
Inappropriate?Wow. I really feel like a dumbass for choosing ING Direct as my new bank. I keep hearing, "at the end of the year" for this Mint.com stuff to clear up. So that's my timeframe. I'll move on to somewhere else if I don't see improvements come December.
I’m embarrassed.
-
Inappropriate? It's OK, jsmiley125. Don't feel embarrassed because it's not at all your fault.
ING Direct received a ton on positive press initially that they did not deserve because no one reviewing them ever had to live with them for an extended period of time. Nor were the reviewers current customers of online banks that ING bought so they could enter into the online retail banking arena.
We were with Net Bank originally and then ING bought them. We decided to give ING the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, ING took a great banking model that we were extremely happy with and then proceeded to blow it to pieces.
For example, during the takeover, they re-negged on their pledge to offer NetBank customers checks (like NetBank did) and to offer seamless customer service. When we inquired a month later wondering where our checks were, they said they declined to offer them. It would have been great to let us know, but instead we had to go fishing. In the meanwhile - sometimes you need a check. Not everyone can take one mailed from ING.
NetBank also had a very intuitive, user-friendly interface. ING Direct's interface looks and feels like it was designed by a 5 year old and has not improved or even changed much at all since it was first rolled out 2 years ago. This is part of the reason I rely so heavily on Mint.com - it's AWESOME and perhaps ING is just afraid because they are so terribly inadequate and inept.
ING don't seem to have much experience with retail customers or online banking for that matter, but they have a lot of experience manipulating the press and potential customers.
I've seen the manipulation happen many times and it saddens me that this is allowed to continue.
I’m empathetic
-
Inappropriate?I just want to echo all of the above. When I wanted an alternative to my increasingly abusive lifetime relationship with Wells Fargo banking experience, I decided to open an ING account because of the early good press. I have not been terribly impressed--mostly due to the incredible clunkyness of the website that I have to use for all account functions--and being able to use Mint to at least see the balance was an important remedy for that rather glaring fault.
ING, it's pretty dumb to disable a third party service loved by your customers that's adding value to your own, and arguably compensating for some of your central shortcomings. You should have developed an alternative before killing their working kludge. I need my accounts working in Mint more than I need to bank at ING.
I'm sure everyone following this discussion will have noticed that Mint was purchased by Intuit recently. Maybe that will light a fire under ING.
This is the future. Your customers are people already inclined to the network model. Get with it!
My needs are modest. If you can just manage to let Mint show me my ING balance, you get to keep my savings account long term. Otherwise as soon as my fossilized credit union gets it done, I'll be gone. -
Inappropriate?followed instructions here and it worked for me immediately:
http://www.ehow.com/how_4901391_ing-d... -
I would have to say, what i did is came up with a hard to guess password, and used the same password for all the questions (this way the order of the question did not matter). After I did this, I followed the guide above and it popped up with the questions, I answered and it udpated! -
Inappropriate?Oh wow. That actually worked. It's a non-solution to the problem, however. And the e-how link is also inaccurate/outdated, so follow amanpatel's advice in his comment above too:
1) Use your Saver ID and not your customer # (even though it says you can) when adding your ING account
2) Change all of your 10 security questions on ING to the SAME ANSWER. Do this at your own risk, however. Make doubly sure it's EXTREMELY difficult to guess - like a very long string of letters and numbers.
It's obvious ING wants to make this as difficult as possible for this customers. This will work for me in the meanwhile, but I'm still leaving ING since having all my security questions the same to make this work in not a risk I'm willing to take for very long.
I need Mint more than I need ING.
I’m still incredulous that it was this hard
-
Inappropriate? My ING Direct link had been working, most of the time, up until the first of this month. Now it doesn't.
I just opened an E*Trade Online Banking account and entered my username/password into mint.com and instantly is shows both the checking and saving account in a read only connection. That's how it's supposed to work. My wife and I are now talking about moving our ING accounts over to etrade. -
Inappropriate?I too am frustrated by ING's on-again off-again Mint integration. I'm not going to reenter my Security Questions again. I've already moved m savings to "Ally".
I agree that the interface at ING is very clunky and amateurish. Some of the recent upgrades ING made to the web site only made it more so. They (ING) certainly are saving money on their web developers. -
Inappropriate?Just to follow up, my solution posted above no longer works. We're looking to move everything out of ING right now. It's such a disaster.
I’m still incredulous.
-
Inappropriate?Boy, quite a bit of emotions have been rolling here. I'll just state that up to now, I've been a very happy ING customer. They've delivered on what they've promised. Great rates, and good customer service.
Recently, I've been growing frustrated with Quicken 2009, as I've been unable to sync it reliably with a number of my ING accounts. So I decided to give Quicken Online & Mint.com a spin to see if they could do better. It seems plain to see now that if Quicken 2009, Quicken Online, & Mint.com are all unable to sync with ING where the issue lies. I've had many happy years with ING, but this inconvenience of being restricted to ING's website only to access my account information has made me reconsider my choices.
Does someone else know of some good, comparable high-yield online banks to ING that do work with "account aggregators" such as Mint.com & Quicken Online (and even Quicken 2009? Maybe it'll work fine once ING's out).
Thanks.
I’m sad.

Stephen, Most of us here are so happy with mint.com that we're looking for banks who play well with others. We're not leaving mint, that is unless intuit does something stupid.
Kinda interesting, I work for a company somewhat similar to mint, except for corporate investments, scraping countless websites for 9 figure accounts. And ING doesn't want to let mint scrape my account? heh. -
Inappropriate?Stephen, I want to echo what Zebthepilot says. We need/want Mint more than we need/want any of our banks at the moment. We are very happy with Mint. Mint's product is just that superior - for people's whose banks play nice with it.
-
Inappropriate?Based on some of the recommendations here I've, for the past month, been moving all my accounts from ING to E*Trade. By the end of this month I'll be able to be able to close all accounts at ING. Thank-you to those that recommended E*Trade. Very professional, especially compared to ING.

Inappropriate?I emailed ING's sales dept and this was their reply:
Hi,
We discourage sharing your banking credentials with anyone, including aggregation services like Mint.com, because we can't determine how they address security, privacy or the use of cookies. Once account information leaves ING DIRECT, we don't have control over our Customers' personal information or know if it's being used legitimately.
We understand your need for this service and assure you we are working on a solution to allow you to use aggregation services in a secure way, without compromising your personal banking information. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, you can download your ING DIRECT account activity directly from our website, either as a CSV file you can import into your spreadsheet software or directly into your personal finance software such as Quicken.
