Why does Firefox not include built-in search for support?
The more people who ask this question, the more it gets noticed.

Inappropriate?Hi my name is myles7897, I volunteer giving support at Live Chat, http://support.mozilla.com/chat.
Firefox includes in product support, via the F1 key or Help > Help Contents. Currently, SuMo, support.mozilla.com, doesn't have an "official" search plugin ,that is why it is not included. Although SuMo turns up first in a Google Search for Firefox Support. A search plugin will probably be made sometime before the 0.8 version comes out (August 2008). Thus Firefox might have one after that. To insure that Firefox will have one, file a bug at http://bugzilla.mozilla.org.

Firefox support can be found in the form of a knowledge base, you can ask a question at support.mozilla.com, visit our chat room at irc.mozilla.org #firefox, or just post here at Get Satisfaction.
I’m gald to be a part of SuMo.

Inappropriate? Thanks but based on research it seems being able to add the current viewed page as a search variable has been requested for quite some time now.
That it hasn't eventuated suggests it's not a priority.
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?Well there is this bug. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug... that it dependent on this bug, https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug... (SuMo needs a favicon!), which is dependent on this bug, https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug... (SuMo needs artwork).
So after we get artwork, we get a favicon, and then a search plugin. I heard somewhere that the favicon is going to be in the next release (0.7, July 2008). So it should be soon that we have a plugin. I was suggesting you file a bug for having it added to the default plugin list.
I’m thankful for Firefox 3

Inappropriate?I'm not sure I understand.
I am stating that you cannot access variables such as the active tab's URI (to use as a search variable) in search queries - by search I mean the search bar, not the built in page search
And you're telling me the hold up for additional variable support (like referring page) is a favicon and artwork? Surely that cannot be the case?! -
Inappropriate?Ah, sorry I got really confused. Disregard the artwork and stuff.
On to the real issue, I am not sure about this, Again, I strongly suggest you file a bug for this.
I’m not confused anymore.

Inappropriate?Let me get this correct, the question actually should be:
"Why doesn't Firefox disregard my privacy and pass on the URL of the current page I'm viewing when I use the search box next to the address bar?"
Correct? -
Inappropriate?No, that's not what I am asking.
There are occasions where being able to do a search against the active tab/ view would be a good thing. I'm not saying kill-the-baby and turn such a thing on by default (knee jerk reaction?) - I'm asking for it to be an option.
For example, submitting an active tab to a translation site, running an active tab through another site and so on. -
Inappropriate?Doing work on a tab is not really related to the search bar. For example, there is a translate extension for Google Translate, demo video. What do you mean "running an active tab through another site"? Like, a way to have the search bar have a Google (site search) option which appends with site:domainname.com?
I'm trying to get as much information as possible to figure out what you're really looking for. -
Inappropriate?>a way to have the search bar have a Google (site search) option which appends with site:domainname.com?
That's one example. A contextual search in effect. At the moment the only real dynamic element we have is {searchTerms}. We can't really get anything else from the browser - like the page visible when the search was run.
Obviously I'm not using the in-built search toolbar in the manner intended, perhaps I should look at doing a search toolbar via building an extension to achieve it.
Thanks for responding. -
See, the reason I'm confused is in your first response you say it's been requested for some time now, but don't link to anything supporting this. If you could, please do, so I can see what kinds of things people are requesting it for.
