Can not start Thunderbird. Says already running, even after a re-boot.
Today is Wednesday, June 24, 2009. I tried to start Thunderbird today and it said that I already have a session open. It said to restart Windows. I did that and it still will not let me start Thunderbird. I looked at the task manager and at the processes running and I do not have Thunderbird running. Can you tell me what is wrong and how do I get Thunderbird back up?

Inappropriate?Hi,
press control + alt + delete keys at same time
a windows management box will come up
click on Task Manager
The click on the Processes Tab
If you click on Image Name ( the heading over the names of the programs that are running) it will alphabetize those programs for you. Click again and you get reverse alphabetizing.
Scroll to Thunderbird.exe and click End Process.
Another box -- Task Manager Warning -- will appear that warns what might happen if you End Process. Just say yes, you want to end it.
What happened is the program didn't really shut down and the computer sees it as running the background. The above procedure will make sure it's shut down. Then you should be able to re-open it. -
This doesnt solve my problem -
Inappropriate?Sorry, I didn't see that you had rebooted. Still, try looking in the task manager and see if it says it's running. Did you let the machine stay off for 30 secs when you rebooted?

Inappropriate?Thunderbird.exe is not in my list of processes. Last night Thunderbird sent an automatic update. I didn't restart last night, but this morning I couldn't start it. I did rebott after 10+ hours, still no help.

Inappropriate?I know how you feel. I have installed and uninstalled as well but the same problem happens again after one day.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Get ready for this. I found out what has happened.
First, my email is setup with my profile on my PC, but my mail folder are located on a NAS drive (Network Access Server). Well the server was down. So instead of Thunderbird saying it can not open the mail folders, it said that Thunderbird is already running. A bit confusing.
Thank you, all for helping me. Maybe all of your comments will be able to help someone else when they read this thread.

Inappropriate?I left my computer on overnight hoping that Thunderbird might have had enough time to start.....and after 12 hours I got to read my emails!!
I really dont know what to do?? I can see that Thunderbird is running in the processor but just wont display on my monitor in a normal time frame.
Also now I cant open any links in my emails....what is going on???
I'm getting mighty annoyed now.
I’m Grrrrrr

Inappropriate?I have done everything mentioned above. Including uninstalling the currently installed version. Shut down, remove power card, 5 minutes. Re boot, installed newest version of Thunderbird. Still get the error message that a version of Thunderbird is currently running.
I have tried to test what is attempted to start, while monitoring activity in the Task Manager; trying to see if some duplicated .dll was trying to start. I could not see what might be the problem.
So far, I do not see an answer to this problem. -
Inappropriate?Try uninstalling the program through your control panel then
go to C:\Program Files\
and delete the folder "Mozilla Thunderbird"
next go to
for xp: C:\Documents and Settings\(your user)\Application Data
for Vista: C:\Users\(your user)\AppData\Roaming
and delete the folder "Thunderbird"
I had this problem and it appears that is was caused by an old install of thunderbird not completly uninstalling.
After deleting all of the old stuff, reinstall and run.

Inappropriate?Hi Henry:
Daniel's fix of deleting the entire profile should work but is a bit drastic.
Try this first:
1. do a backup (if you haven't done one already)
http://kb.mozillazine.org/MozBackup
2. delete the profile lock file
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_in_...
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Yeah I should have pointed out that this was a quick fix that allowed me to install and get a new account going. I did not need to recover any of the old emails.

Inappropriate?i tried doing what daniel said hopping that it would work. but i still get that message that i have thunderbird already running.. even after i have done a complete delete....
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I fixed it. Go to start menu -> Run. Type thunderbird -P. Manage the profile there, remove broken ones, create new profile.
I’m happy
