Password problem - "Login failed"
I asked a question yesterday about a password problem. Suddenly I can't get my email because it's not recognizing my password. I've never been asked to enter my password before. I finally found my password, I only have one listed, but when I enter it, the message I get is, "Sending of password did not succed. mail server mail.jaredconnorsdesign.com responded: Login failed." Does anyone know what this means and how I can get past this? Thanks, Jared Connors

If you are getting a login failed, this means your connections setting are wrong. When the password you are entering is incorrect it will tell you it is getting "negative vibes", when you have a connection problem it will say login failed. Check your proxy settings on thunderbird and on any add-ons you might have

Inappropriate?go to tools, adds-ons, select webmail if you have that as an add-on and check the port settings. write them down if you have this. Go to tools, options, advanced tab, then network and disk space... click on connection and set your proxy port to the same as the other proxy port in your add-on.

Inappropriate?In my "Add ons" box I have "Extensions" and "Themes." Under "Extensions" I have an option to enable or uninstall "Talkback 2.0.0.9." Under the "Themes" tab it shows "Thunderbird (default) 2.0, the default theme." This is all I show in the "Add ons" tab. Through the other path you gave, in "connections" it is currently set at "Direct connection to the internet." I don't know if that helps or says anything to you or not. Hang in there with me and let me know what I need to do next.

Inappropriate?I have the same problem, having just installed Thunderbird. I used it before and it suddenly asked for a password and I had to stop using it and used Outlook express for ages. Now I am trying to use Thunderbird on a new computer but it keeps asking for the password and will not accept any password I put it. What is Mozilla doing about it. It must be at least 6 months since this started happening. Jo

Inappropriate?I am not a happy camper! When I attempt to send email...it demands a password too! When I enter my password, it claims it is not recognized! What can I do to take this mess off my computer? Not going to go through the hassle of password everytime I send a email!

Inappropriate?I'm assuming most of you know your correct password... This is not a password issue unless you have not entered your password into the Thunderbird options. Options>Email accounts. If you are frustrated with having to enter your password everytime you send and email or if you have multiple email accounts set up on thunderbird and dont want to enter a password for every one of your accounts you can opt to set-up a master password. The master password will have to be typed everytime you start thunderbird and for the first time you will have to enter your other passwords but remember to check off the checkbox that allows you to use the master password from there on out.

Inappropriate?I'm pretty sure you can't do that, Ryan. The way Thunderbird works (as far as I know, I haven't actually added a new account in a while) is thus:
You go through the wizard, putting in only the name (not the password), and when Thunderbird connects to the server, it requests your password. In that password request window, you have the option of checking the box to save it for next time as well.

1. You have been using computers for 30 years (me too :-) ! )
2. You are using the latest version of Thunderbird 2, 2.0.0.23 (let us know if you are using Thunderbird 3)
3. Old versions on three other computers work. What are the old versions (Thunderbird 2.0.0.22?) where you can send and receive email without password issue? What do the older computers run (Windows XP it seems from your comment)? Are all computers on the same LAN ? Please give as much info: what you did, what happened and what you expected.
4. Thanks for letting us know you are using POP. What is your email provider? Is it gmail? Something else?

There are multiple passwords, the master password for Thunderbird:

Looks like you are having the problems with the password for each email account and not the master password (but it won't hurt to reset the master password if you want)
My suggestion until we get full information as requested above from you is to do as Thomas suggested earlier, namely:
1. Backup
Guessing you are all on Windows so:

I know that you guys are trying very hard to resolve these problems, but we dont seem to be getting anywhere, on my laptop I have Vista and I didn't yet experience any password issues, but I have faced the issue of sending emails and I am waiting for replies and finally I have to use the phone to check if my emails ever been received......On my PC I have XP now here I did not experience any email failures, but I cannot log in on to one of my addresses because it keeps on giving me the passwoed failure, I am not very happy about it I have now directed the receiving of my emails on to my Laptop and sending from my PC, its rather peculiar to have to use these methods in the year 2009 50 years after the first computers became available to the masses........Peter -

I was hoping to find a quick answer to the same situation. I'm on a Mac G4 Quicksilver, running OS 10.5.1. I have recently had a major meltdown on my machine, so I had to reinstall everything, after restoring the drive.
Thus, I also downloaded Thunderbird version 2.0.0.23. I entered my account settings for POP and so forth, but was not asked to enter a password, until I chose "get mail" that's when I get the dialog box asking for my password. Silly me, but I generally use only one. (I'm dyslexic, and disorganized, so it's a safety feature for me.) That said, I can't bypass this issue. I have tried to enter my password—no success. Then, as suggested, I went under Preferences>Privacy>Change master password. It took my "new password"—but that ultimately yielded the same result—"Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server mail.(my domain name).net responded: Login failed." Then, I press Cancel, and after pressing Cancel 4 times, it finally understands I wish to cancel...
Sorry, but this should NOT be this cumbersome. There has to be magic bullet. Master password should have worked...

1. Agreed software is imperfect and should not be this cumbersome
2. As I stated above (I guess it was unclear), the master password (which is for Thunderbird overall) is different and independent from the email account passwords that you need to send and receive email.
3. Who is your email provider? gmail? somebody else?
Please double check your email settings are correct. Until the password is correct, Thunderbird (and any other email client) will keep prompting you for a password.
4. If you still can't get it to work, as I suggested previously please try:

Thanks for the reply, and for keeping things cool. I tried using Terminal and followed your instructions, both ways. No go.
Ultimately, what I did was to delete the profile entirely, and relaunched Thunderbird. This brought up the Wizard. There were three things I had to do that ultimately worked: 1. I entered my email address for the user name, both for POP and SMTP. Then, after calling my Internet service provider, they told me my password. I used the radio button to ensure I wouldn't have to enter it every time, AND I wrote these steps down. Viola! Back up and running.

10/27/09 I have had same problems. Drove me nuts. I did what Andreas did -- went to tools/account settings/server settings. In the user name box I put in my FULL email address. Prior to that it had only my email name (the portions before the @ sign). I added my server info so that box now has my complete email address as printed on my emails. Clicked OK and tried it out. Was finally able to access my email. Hope this works for others.

I did nothing in my "settings/server settings. I already had the FULL email address in my User Name section. After being entirely frustrated after about 6 hours I left the computer. Came back in 2 hrs and did not have the problem. It is still working. I am a bellsouth.com customer.Is Sarah or Karen also a bellsouth customer?

Inappropriate?My thunderbird says I am connected to the email server, but won't ask me for my password, thus, it won't log on to my email account and download my emails. I used a different, new computer and set up my new thunderbird account and it logged on just fine. The only difference between the 2 computers is the new one is XP and the old one, that won't log on, is Win2000.
Is there a solution to this problem? The really stupid part is, it worked fine up until last friday afternoon. I had been using it all day up to that point.

Inappropriate?I too am having this issue. It just started a few days ago. I have been using Thunderbird for years without any problems until this. I have not changed anything recently, no new software or hardware, and am able to log into my mail using the web client, so it has nothing to do with the password and something that has changed recently with Thunderbird itself. What settings did Mozilla "tweak"?

Inappropriate?I am also having this issue. It started the other day out of the blue. Nothing had been changed in my settings.
When click on get mail I get a message that says "sending of password did not succeed. Mail Server responded: login failed."
I am then prompted to enter my password. Clicking on the box for the password manager to remember the password appears to do nothing. Usually after several attempts my mail does come in, But it is very frustrating.
I have re-entered my settings but it has made no difference.

What I did last night (10/27/09) was I went to:
Tools/
account settings/
server settings
and there I saw server type (mine is POP Mail Server). Next line is server name which in my case is 'mail.my server.com' (which might be mail.cox.net or mail.yahoo.com -- whatever my server is), my Port is set for 110. I did nothing with these settings. The next line is User Name. Here was only the portion of my email addres in front of the @ sign. So it said only "j.doe" (I made up that name, I am not really Jane Doe). So in this block I edited to put my entire email address -- j.doe@myserver.com. (here this might be j.doe@yahoo.com or j.doe@cox.net). At any rate, by putting my entire email address into the user name box and clicking OK at the bottom of the page to save, I was finally able to re-enter my email, send, receive. I do not know if User Name got corrupted in some way to lose the rest of the email address or not or whether the entire email address was ever required in the past -- this is certainly not something that I changed recently. But this seems to have fixed the problem for me. Hope it works for you as well.
I had already called my server and done tech support wth them -- they told me 'we don't support Thunderbird' (I guess they don't know the ins and outs of it?) but they verified with me that password was accurate, and I could check email through their website (which I hate to use) or through windows mail (which I also hate to use) so was not a server problem, it had to be something with Thunderbird. --Karen -

Over the last year or so I have had this problem sporadically, needing to log in with password 5-8 times before I got in to the email -- and then things would be fine for weeks or months and it would occur again. This occurance began Sunday and continued until last night when I made my changes refered to earlier (all that time I could not get in AT ALL). I'm hoping this is a permanent 'cure'.

Karen, I have had this problem about 3 times since early June. While i couldn't sign sign in or receive mail via Thunderbird I was able to sign in & receive mail via Yahoo mail with the same password and with no problems. I originally used Outlook Express but was not able to get rid os scam emails so I switched to Thunderbird. Now I am considering of transferring back. One item I failed to mention as I was reviewing the Tools area I recall displaying "Edit Save Passwords" it showed my password as "dbbram%40@bellsouth.net". This is not my password nor is it my email address. I deleted it. But it is back again but I am able to use Thunderbird again. I have no idea what this problem is and I have discussed this with my son who is very knowledgeable with computers. He has no answer. I was thinking maybe it was a Bellsouth problem but since you don't use Bellsouth I don't know the answer.

I'm currently using the iMAC OS X platform and TBird v.2.0.0.17.
- Mail service provider: uncertain (trying to confirm with the tech team)
- Email protocol: POP
- Server name: mail.apesnap.com
- Port number: 110 Default: 100
- Choice for "Secure Connection" (Server Settings): Never
- for "Secure Connection" (Outgoing Server): None
Any attempt to get new mail/ read messages would result in the following error message: Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server mail.apesnap.com responded: Unable to log on.
Entering of my password would simply trigger a repeat of the same prompt for password and the same error correspondingly till eventually the prompt stops only to occur when I choose to get new messages or read messages.
I've tried to upgrade to the latest TBird but problem's still persisting.
Please help?

I solved the problem by going through Bellsouth server and changing my password to a temporary p.w. and getting my mail that way. I then changed the temporary one back to my original one, then Bellsouth had to do something with my modem and new p.w. so they would recognize each other....problem solved. Go back to your server and make them fix it. I was told once they do not deal with Thunderbird and they wanted to charge me, I called back and got someone else that was able to solve the problem at no charge! Bottom line is that your server can fix it!!

I solved my problem by using a DNS search download that I found online. It went to my mail server and found the exact name my mail server was looking for. I then entered that name in my mail account setup and then it worked.
The problem is with your mail server. It is looking for information that you have not entered into your mail account set up. Don't expect Thunderbird to help, they don't know what your problem is and I get the impression they don't care either.
Your ISP should be able to give you the info that your mail server is looking for, but I have found that most of them are busy with their own problems and don't really want to be bothered with yours.
There are simply a ton of folks out there with this problem and it is a simple one to fix. You simply have to take the bull by the horns and find out what info your mail AND SMTP server are looking for. Then supply that info via your mail account setup process. Then it will work. Hope this helps. This is a very frustrating problem that, as far as I am concerned, the ISP or Thunderbird could get fixed if they would do it, but I don't think they really want to bother.
Looks to me like some IT guy out there could write a little program that would go to the server and gather the info that the server is looking for and then install it into Thunderbird or Outlook Express or whatever email program you are using. How about it GEEKS, here is a challenge!!! Step up to the plate. Show us how smart you are. A lot of folks out here in "email for dummies land" are counting on YOU =-} -
Inappropriate?Hi, I was having the problem of not being able to get the emails from my blueyonder account, despite setting it up successfully numerous other times on other pcs etc. I have now finally succeeeded by not using my email address in the USER NAME input box, but using the annoying "user name" given by blueyonder originally - a collection of letters and numbers with no @ symbol. I put in the password and huzzah download huge quantities of spam and rubbish...success :)
My hotmail worked fine, so not sure if these problems are specific to other providers? But maybe try using your account name, not the email address associated with it?

Inappropriate?I have suffered through this same scenario several times. What the problem turned out to be was in Server Settings: Under User Name, put your full email address, not your user name. [why this field was labeled User Name is beyond me]. In my experience, if my email address were joe@isp.com, my user name would be joe, and NOT joe@isp.com.
In Account Settings, put your full email address where asked for Email Address. And, of course, being absolutely sure about the password, smtp and pop3 server names, and port numbers is very important! -

Inappropriate?I'm having problems configuring mail accounts in Thunderbird. It is recognizing my email account/password through my ISP (Comcast) and that account seems to be working fine; I'm able to send and receive mail. But it's giving me grief when trying to configure the accounts I have from my website. I did not have any problems on my old computer when running Outlook (my old machine was XP).
-My new computer is Windows 7
-Thunderbird 3.0
-mail service provider is my own website www.debi-do.com (my webhost is Laughing Squid)
-email protocol is POP/IMAP (Thunderbird is recognizing it as IMAP-I've tried both.)
-port number: 143 (with POP it's 110)
-server name: debi-do.com (TB wants to plug the server name as mail.debi-do.com. I've tried it both ways.)
-secure connection: TB wants to automatically configure it with STARTTLS. (I've tried it with and without. TB gives me encryption warnings when I set it to none.)
-outgoing mail server: smtp.comcast.net
Upon account setup TB keeps giving me a message "Username or Password Invalid"
On my old computer I had it successfully configured with Outlook thusly:
-XP
-same mail service provider/web host
-POP server: mail.debi-do.com
-outgoing mail server: smtp.comcast.net
-username: ...@debi-do.com
-no security settings other than password

Inappropriate?I had this exact issue using IMAP on an email account that has worked the same for YEARS. It ended up being an issue with TB3 changing the security settings of the account when I upgraded. I changed the security settings under the Outgoing account and restarted TB. Thankfully, I had a second outgoing account on the same server with correct settings that were not changed. I copied the settings to the default account and was back sending email.
