smtp settings are correct. Why can't I send email with AT&T yahoo?
I changed my password on ATT/Yahoo and in Thunderbird. I can download messages but can't send. Before I made the change, I had no problems receiving or sending. When sending, I get the following message: "The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.att.yahoo.com failed. Verify your SMTP server setting is correct." I've read all the knowledge base q&A. I have confirmed with ATT that my settings incoming and outgoing are correct. I had this problem before and ATT was able to resolve it...but apparently they can't (or won't)now. I can't even pay for a resolution. Can anyone help? I like Thunderbird and don't want to change unless I absolutely have to. Does anyone know why ATT won't support Thunderbird or Mozilla?
I apparently don't know what I'm doing since I only received 1 response and referred to Canada. I'm in Florida using ATT/Bellsouth.net

Inappropriate? Are you connecting on port 465 and using SSL?
-
Inappropriate?Winnie:
1. Please double check your settings
Here are some links that *may* help with the settings (may because Bellsouth is big and settings vary by region)
http://support.att.net/bellsouth/asp/...
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r2244...
http://www.raysmyth.net/dunce/13-mail...
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtop...
2. Is your outgoing userid something like "winne%bellsouth.net"
If so, the use of the "per cent" i.e. "%" character is wrong, it needs to be changed to to use an "at sign" i.e."@" e.g. "winnie@bellsouth.net)
3. If that doesn't fix it, please post screenshots of your outgoing SMTP server settings or if you don't know how to do screenshots:
Without telling us your e-mail address or account name, what are your server settings, including server name, port number, and choice for "Secure Connection" for:
Tools->Account Settings->*account name*>Server Settings?
Tools->Account Settings->Outgoing Server (SMTP) (at the bottom of the list of accounts on the left)>*server*>Edit?
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Outgoing user id is my name@ (no % sign).
Server settings are correct - I checked with ATT but here they are:
Server: pop.att.yahoo.com Port 995
Outgoing: my email address - smtp.att.yahoo.com (default)
Server name: smtp.att.yahoo.com
Port: 465
Secure connection: 465
I believe it is an att issue but they say no and will not assist with Thunderbird.
Please, please help.
Thank you. -
Inappropriate? If you can not connect to the server, it doesn't have to do with your user name or password - we haven't gotten far enough to send your username or password. Either there's some issue with the port or server name or connection type (though they all look right from what you say), or somehow you are blocked from connecting to the smtp server, perhaps by a firewall/router or less likely, a virus checker. Or ATT could be blocking your ip address.
-
Port and server are both correct. (I verified with aTT). I don't have a firewall or router. I disabled my antivirus and ATT says they are not blocking my ip address. What's next? I'm so frustrated! -
Inappropriate?Hi Winnie:
David is absolutely right as always :) but doublecheck please:
1. confirm you are using SSL (and not TLS or something else)
Tools->Account Settings->Outgoing Server
2. confirm your outgoing username is at a bellsouth.net e.g. winnie@bellsouth.net or some valid AT&T or Bell South domain (not gmail or other non AT&T or Bell South domain)
3. test you can connect to smtp.att.yahoo.com port 465
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Definitely using SSL
outgoing server name is: smtp.att.yahoo.com
Port 465
user name: winnie@bellsouth.net
I find this incredulous since the only thing I did was to change my password (on both bellsouth and Thunderbird).
What do you mean by #3. how do I test other than trying to send an email?
I still think this is an ATT problem and I spend more than 2 hours on the phone arguing with them - to no avail. -
Inappropriate?I think Roland was suggesting something like using telnet to see if you could connect to the host, but that doesn't work so well with SSL (you need a special ssl-enabled telnet).
You could try configuring some other e-mail client like Outlook Express and see if it can connect to the smtp server over SSL with that port and username, etc. -
I don't have Outlook installed but plan on doing so in a week or two. However, I very much like Thunderbird's email format and don't really want to change. Outlook's format is much like ATT/Yahoo's format (which I don't like at all). -
Inappropriate?Unless you're running windows 7 or have uninstalled it, you should already have Outlook Express (not Outlook) on your machine.
-
Inappropriate?One last thing to check:
Start->Run
next to "Open:" enter "telnet smtp.att.yahoo.com 465"
if the prompt window clears without throwing any errors, the Telnet test has passed. If you receive an error message, then access to the Yahoo server has been blocked by your firewall or anti-virus.
If that works, then as David wrote, any further testing will require using another email client like Outlook Express.
I’m confident
-
David is correct. I do have Outlook Express (I just never set up an email account in it since I've always used Netscape/Thunderbird). I will try to set up an email account later this week and see if that works.
Roland - when I enter telnet smtp.att.yahoo.com 465 in Run I get a window that is all black. No error message or anything. -
Inappropriate? So, two things that occur to me.
1) Are you sure your new password is correct? What about caps/caps-lock? This is the type of mistake that I often make :(. Try to reset your password again. I think their web interface for this is: http://att.yahoo.com/mail
2) You don't mention the version of Thunderbird you are using. One problem I had in going to 3.x was that it wanted to automatically check "Use Secure Authentication". Even though I have a secure connection I don't have secure authentication. Try changing that setting (if you have 3.x) it is in the SMTP settings.
MLH -
The passwords are correct and I did got in to ATT and reenter them to be sure.
I have Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 and there are no updates. I don't see "Use Secure Authentication" option in the outgoing.
I think I am doomed! -
Inappropriate?Hi,
I am willing to bet this is a port problem. If your ISP has recently changed the port setting for outgoing mail, then you need to change your outgoing port setting.
This is especially a problem if you are at one computer and trying to send email thru your ISP as though you are at work or some other place using your work smtp server. In other words, if you are using your ISP as a pass-thru to some other server such as your work server, and if your ISP suddenly blocks the use of port 25 for example to avoid spamming, then you need to find out from your ISP if they suddenly changed this.
This was a problem on Verizon last week, and then they forgot to open up the port they said to use :-( so even when I changed ports, it did not work.
I wasted a week of time on this mess, but with a change in my port setting, I can pass thru the Verizon ISP directly to my work smtp server and voila, I can send email again.
Anne -
Inappropriate? The use secure authentication issue is with TB 3.0, which hasn't been released yet.
Re telnet, can you try bring up a dos command prompt and type the telnet command Roland gave there? I tried it here and did connect to the port, even though that port is supposed to be just for ssl. -
Inappropriate?David: Anything else to try? Not sure if you missed the GS comment in email but Winnie seems to have done a successful telnet connectivity test:
QUOTE from Winnie
Roland - when I enter telnet smtp.att.yahoo.com 465 in Run I get a window that is all black. No error message or anything.
END QUOTE
Winnie: it's not impossible for the email settings to have changed without telling the mail provider's support team or users (it happened recently with 2 major email providers who shall remain nameless), but i guess we'll have to take Bell South's word for it that they haven't changed anything!
I’m confident
-
Bottom line - no one has the definitive answer.....I am doomed. -
Inappropriate?Hi Winnie:
Josh Mills also on AT&T Yahoo but on pacbell instead of Bell South has outgoing email working. Here are his settings in case this triggers some thoughts that could lead to a solution
QUOTING Josh from:
http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_me...

Inappropriate?I changed my ATT password and am having the exact same problem as Winnie. Help Please
-
I have same problem in Florida. All settings correct according to ATT/Bell South but I cannot send or receive e-mail on Mozilla Thunderbird. A help page somewhere said if the system goes down (it did 11/19) a password must be reentered but I cannot find anyplace for that input. Vista operating system. -
Inappropriate? One other thing, I have three other ATT email accounts on Thunderbird and I can send fine on those. The outgoing settings are the same for all four. Just the one whose password I changed is the problem
-
Inappropriate? Are you prompted for a new password? If not, you could try going into password manager (tools | options | security | passwords, click saved passwords, and remove the "bad" password.
-
I cannot find "password manager anywhere. I am not prompted for a new password. T'bird went down yesterday morning along with Outlook and Outlook Express according to AT&T Tech Support and that is how my e-mail program no longer worked. -
Inappropriate?Tools menu, pick options. Then click the security tab, then the passwords tab...
-
Inappropriate?I see the
tools\options\security passwords in Firefox but not in Thunderbird. When getting there in Firefox there are no passwords showing for my email accounts. -
Inappropriate?Tools pulldown (alt-T)
Options (o)
PRIVACY tab
Passwords subtab
Edit Saved Passwords (Alt-i)
Show Passwords
Yes(alt-Y)
Find the SMTP password in question, and remove.
As long as Thunderbird thinks it has a password, it often doesn't clear it, and often doesn't ask for a new one.
If it is cleared, it should ask for a new one, if it gets that far. If there are reasons the port is not accepted, or the web address is blocked by your ISP, or your IP is blocked by your mail server, you won't get that far. But if you can access the server from other accounts on the same machine, it is likely the password.
Technically, changing the user name should also prompt for a new password at the appropriate time, then you can change the user name back to the right one again, but it is faster to use the Password Manager.
I’m concerned
-
Inappropriate?I cleared the password. I still don't get far enough to be asked for a new one. My other email accts are working fine. Just the one on the acct whose password I changed won't send.
When originally changing the password on the AT&T site, it stated that the password in the modem also needed to be changed. I didn't do this because the two passwords were never the same and my internet connection is fine.
Might deleting the whole email account in Thunderbird and adding it back as new solve the problem? -
Inappropriate? No, deleting the Email account will just cause more work and more frustration.
I'm assuming that
1) You checked the password saved with the password manager and confirmed that you typed it as you thought; AND
2) that you logged onto the "web-mail" for that mail server and used the password there, and sent from the web-mail, thus confirming that the Password that you thought you changed to is really what you set.
I'm also assuming that you doubled checked your outgoing server name, your user name, and your port settings.
Besides, you can have multiple outgoing settings, and can select any of them you want for any of the E-mail accounts.
I’m concerned
-
Inappropriate?By the way, even though I can't send out through my GoDaddy E-mail accounts, I can send out fine through Gmail. Unless people read the file headers, they have no clue that I sent out though a different mail server.
And today, my ISP stated they are only blocking port 25, not port 80, port 3535, nor port 465; so even though they told me it was their fault that I'm being blocked from the mail server, I'm getting a different response now. Anyway, still no solution for using the regular mail server, and the need to route through a different server.
I’m concerned
-
Inappropriate?Yes to all of the above. I'm not sure how to select a different email server for outgoing. When I go into T-bird settings and change the default outgoing server to a different account, I still can't send messages from the problem email account. Your help is appreciated.
-
Inappropriate? To send through a different mail server:
Tools pull down menu (alt-T)
Account settings (c)
scroll down to the account of concern
On the right, you will see Outgoing Server (SMTP): (u)
Assuming that you actually have set up multiple outgoing servers...
you can scroll down the list to assign the one you want to use.
Then "ok"
You may have an issue with your default outgoing being IMAP instead of POP or vice versa...
I have not tried setting up an IMAP yet, so I'm not sure of the implications of having both.
But you did state that it was working before the password changed, thus I'm assuming all your accounts are POP and that you have set up the outgoing servers.
I’m wondering
-
Inappropriate?I just spent an hour on the phone with AT&T. They did a remote access. Not sure what all they did but email is sending now on all accounts. Thanks for helping.
-
Inappropriate? Is it possible they poked at the password in your dsl modem?
-
Inappropriate?Yes it is possible that AT&T did something. From what I have heard AT&T controls the router at the customer's home as well as the email servers
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Yes, we did reset the modem password. I believe they also cleared my t-bird passwords, which I thought I had done, because I was prompted by t-bird to enter my password. I'm pretty sure it was all password related within t-bird and possibly the modem.
-
to be precise, if AT&T cleared passwords they cleared your email server password (which have to correspond to the passwords in Thunderbird) and router password, AT&T doesn't have access to your Thunderbird so can't touch the passwords stored in Thunderbird. -
Inappropriate?JOYCE TARNOW got it working, here are her settings from this thread:
http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_me...
joyce's correct at&t settings
I also lost my T'Bird send & receive e-mails. Even though AT&T/Bell South techs said all my settings were correct, I could not overcome the error messages about stmp refusal. Then, I dug up from August my notes when Yahoo merged with AT&T. I used those settings and T'Bird revived.
Incoming Server pop.att.yahoo.com, Port 995 check SSL
Outgoing Server smtp.att.yahoo.com, Port 465 check SSL
The password window at first bumped my first two inputs but then accepted the password I use for AT&T.
Again another case of mail provider support inadvertently (or through the left hand not knowing the right hand) giving people the wrong Thunderbird settings
I’m happy
-
As I've written in my numerous other comments, these are the settings I have and still cannot send email after changing my password. Glad this solved your problem; but apparently it isn't mine. I don't think anyone has the answer. :( -
Inappropriate?Winnie -
No one has the answer for me to send through the mail server for my business either. So in the meantime, all E-mail is going through other servers. After all, the business E-mail has to have responses. I can't just wait until there is a solution.
I’m concerned
-
Inappropriate?I, too, had the same problem. Everything was working OK for my att.net email account using TB. Then I had to change my email password & bingo, I could not send via att. As all have done before me, I checked my settings over and over and over. They are correct. They were correct.
So what happened? Perhaps the key is that I changed my password. So...I went into Options|Privacy|Passwords and clicked on "Edit Saved Passwords." I then erased all of my entries with smtp under the "site" column.
I then re-re-re-re-attempted to send an email I had saved. I was prompted for my password, which I entered, and the mail went smoothly on its way to its intended recipient. Yi Ha!
Perhaps this will help some others.
By the way, my smtp is smtp.att.yahoo.com.
Good luck.
Dan
I’m thankful & happy
-
Inappropriate?Dan,
You hit it right on the head. That is what AT&T did for me. I changed my password on another account and had the same problems until I went into the "Edit Saved Passwords" and deleted the old password that was still being saved.
Chris -
Inappropriate?Been reading this for the last 30 minutes as I had the same problem with my password not working all of a sudden. AT&T techies couldn't solve the problem which I eventually did for getting my email. Yet, after that, I couldn't receive even though all settings were "exact" with no mistakes or changes. Of course, AT&T now said they don't support Thunderbird by would help with OE. No thanks. Read the entire thread and went straight to saved passwords and eliminated all of them, closed and reopened Thunderbird. Receive asked for the password, send asked for the password and out went my email.
-
Inappropriate?I like all here have been driving myself wacko trying to make TB 3.0 work with Bellsouth/ATT (Florida). After looking at my laptop's Outlook settings and making every change possible in TB 3.0 I finally gave up and removed TB 3.0 and re-installed TB 2.0.0.23. I now can send/receive email with no problems. Looks to me like the TB folks have a slight problem with 3.0 and need to do a bit of tweeking.
-
Hi Jack: LIke all software, thunderbird 3.0 is not perfect. AT&T problems have been occuring well before Thunderbird 3.0, in fact most of them have been with 2.0.0.23 (such as Winnie's) -
Inappropriate? One morning about a week ago my DSL modem acted like it was brand new and I was forced to get a new password for my att.yahoo account. After much configuring I got to the point of receiving mail and TB prompted for the new password, I thought all was well. However sending mail did not work and I was going crazy checking the same settings over and over. My other att.yahoo accounts work fine, not the one with the new password. Michael's comment provided my exact solution! Open up tools>options>security>saved passwords>show passwords and remove the old password for the smtp accounts which was still saved. The key is to close and reopen TB. Next time you send mail, your prompted to enter the new password. Thanks!
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Winnie: did you try:
1. getting AT&T to change your email passwords
2. Removing thunderbird's saved SMTP passwords?:
i)Tools->Options->Privacy (Security in Thunderbird 3.0)->Passwords and click on "Edit Saved Passwords." ("Saved Passwords..." in Thunderbird 3.0)
ii) erase all passwords with smtp under the "site" column
iii) Close Thunderbird
iv) Restart Thunderbird
I’m happy

I have solved my problem. I changed my outgoing smtp address (that ATT said was what it should be) from "smtp.att.yahoo.com" to "mail.mia.bellsouth.net" which was my old address before ATT switched to Yahoo. This has now been working for me. However, on my Outlook Express (that ATT does support) the outgoing address is "smtp.att.yahoo.com". Why the different outgoing addresses for TB and OE is anyone's guess.
Thanks to everyone for their attempts to solve my problem. Hope my resolution helps others. -

Inappropriate?Winnie, glad you got this working! Marking as Solved. thanks for your dedication and patience!
My guess is that for whatever reason Thunderbird has the wrong password stored for smtp.att.yahoo.com, did you try deleting the smtp.att.yahoo.com password in: Tools->Options->Privacy (Security in Thunderbird 3.0)->Passwords and click on "Edit Saved Passwords." ("Saved Passwords..." in Thunderbird 3.0) ?
