Thunderbird - Cannot download messages, server times out. Can send emails though.
I have Windows XP Professional and have used Thunderbird with my provider, Roadrunner, for a long time. Recently, I am no longer able to retrieve my messages. The status bar shows "Downloading 1 of 74," so it sees the messages there. After a moment, I get an error message indicating that the connection with the server has rimed out. The odd thing is that I can still send emails. I reinstalled Thunderbird; that did not fix the problem. I compacted the folders; still no success.

Inappropriate?hi....i'm not an employee, but i'm searching for the answer to your problem only i'm about 1 step further than you are, i know the answer, i just can't remember where i go to fix it. i see quite a few ppl are in your boat so thought i'd drop a line real quick. i've seen some replies by some guy named roland but i think he's missing the mark.
(don't say anything but i stopped using tbird about 2 years ago and heard about 3.0 being released so i thought i'd check it out so my tinkering is a bit rusty)
the server timeout, especially when downloading a lot of mail, or large attachments, has to do with the time that thunderbird maintains a persistent connection to the server. the default used to be 60 seconds, once i changed that to 5 minutes i had no more issues. i just can't remember where the darned switch is.
hopefully knowing a bit further into what i'm fairly certain is your issue can move you that much closer to finding a solution.
I’m confident
