Box lunches should be recycled and composted
Next year we should recycle and compost the box lunch scraps (get biodegradable utensils and dishes) because 2,000 of those in the trash really adds up.

Inappropriate? We're doing a big green initiative next year, so we'll be doing all we can to make the convention carbon-neutral and as close to zero-waste as possible.

Inappropriate? If there's a green initiative in the future, that's wonderful. It's something I've wanted to see from Netroots Nation from the get go. Let me know how I can help.

Inappropriate? Thanks! The convention center in Pittsburgh is the first and only LEED certified cc in the country, so we'll be developing a big carbon-neutral, low- (or no-) waste plan.

Inappropriate? Can we also make sure the extra left-overs get to shelters and foodbanks? There was so many left-overs and people outside the convention were going hungry on the streets. Very un-netroots.

I can't wait to go ahead and register next week! I live in Denver and I was pretty bummed to see waste and the homeless during the DNC.
See my entry here:

and I love that idea!
but woohoo!! first netroots for me! -
Inappropriate? We'll certainly see what we can do! Good idea.

Inappropriate?I looked up the convention center in Pittsburgh and they do already have a program of donating leftovers to shelters etc. :)
We should try to reduce packaging though, and that means avoiding boxed lunches if possible. It wastes packaging and food. I think putting together a volunteer team with OC in charge would be a great idea. This is one of the things that I would need to see in order to get a plan together for my team here who is considering sponsoring. We are sustainable living focused team of coalition groups and want to see some plans in place for this focus.
I think a few thousand apples got tossed this year. :(

Inappropriate?nc - i do not know the difference in cost between a buffet setup and the box lunches - but the point about waste is a great one that we should take into consideration. And I thought the apples were the best part.
-
Eric, if you thought those pesticide laden woody apples were the best part, I need to take you shopping bro. ;) Seriously, my point was that the vast majority of people did not eat theirs and they were left at the tables even more than the chips and sandwiches. Hopefully the hotel gave them to a homeless shelter. You need real foodies organizing the food. I have read OC's diaries and this is right up her ally. -
Actually it just shows you how starved I was for friuts or veggies that week. Usually, the box lunch (if we had a chance to grab one) was the first food of te day and we then wouldn't get a chance to go out for dinner till after the last event and prepping for the next day. Austin was great but 99% of the places stopped serving food at 10pm so it was either deeeep fried bar food at wait til 2 am when the taco carts came out. -
Inappropriate?I hear you on the food. I did find some good restaurants with excellent veggie choices that were open very late (passed 1 am) and serving. It would have been nice to have them at the hotel though. The coffee place in the hotel had surprisingly good salads for conventional. I heard several people comment on how good they were.
While at the conference, you might need to have volunteer "runners" to get food for the organizers who are likely too busy as you say to get a good meal in. I had that problem myself and wasn't nearly as busy as all of you. When I did find food it was usually the fried junk stuff I don't normally eat but was forced to anyway.
There is another thread on exhibitors that I have to comment on, but food as part of those is a very good idea. Especially if it is good food. -
Inappropriate?I think the thing with conventions is that the hosts want to be friendly and you're going to have a lot of waste. Buffets are also easier and cheaper to set up.
While boxed lunches mean more waste and/or recycling, they also cut down on how much food you eat/waste.
one idea is to 'give back' to the host city (if we have time). Some of us bloggers should. -
