Inconvenient Political Truth: Campaign Ads & The Environment
Why haven't either of the Presidential candidates addressed the carbon footprint of the hundreds of millions of dollars they are spending on political advertising?
Today, neither our print nor our digital media infrastructures are sustainable, but they can be. Given the importance that both candidates have placed on climate change and on the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, last week I sent an invitation to the DNC, the Obama Campaign, the RNC and the McCain Campaign inviting them to address the carbon footprint associated with the billions of dollars that will be spent on political advertising in 2008 and address the sustainability of the print and digital media supply chain infrastructure that Americans depend upon.
The following press release was also made:
Inconvenient Political Truth: Campaign Ads & The Environment
Billions of dollars and a big carbon footprint
http://www.csrwire.com/News/12671.html
So far there has been little mainstream media attention to the release and we have not received a response from either candidate, nor from the DNC or RNC.
It is laudable that the two parties are seeking to "green up" their respective conventions, but the addressing the carbon footprint of more than $4 billion dollars that will be spent on political advertising in 2008 is a much bigger story... and one that has yet to be given the attention such an important issue deserves.

Inappropriate?Where is the Obama camp on this? If he can "entertain" the notion of more nuclear power under the "right" circumstances, surely he can entertain the notion of a greener campaign, right?
I’m anxious for change

Inappropriate? Are they addressing their carbon footprint in any aspect of the campaign - flights, fundraisers, tv interviews, etc.? With disclosure on the advertising front, I'd want the same for the overall campaign. I wonder if the various camps have the insight to parse out their impact or if they avoid it on purpose b/c the entire effort is so wasteful.
I’m concerned.

Inappropriate?I think it is about time both campaigns come clean and talk the talk and walk the walk ... good for Carli asking the question!

Inappropriate?I hadn't thought of the carbon footprint from ads before; the waste of money was bad enough. What I've been upset about is all the plane travel, especially early in the campaign when every candidate was zooming around from state to state. I haven't heard a word about offsets for any of it, and I hope Don will add that carbon debt to the candidate's bill.
Thanks for your efforts. ...Harriet

Inappropriate?I believe the carbon footprint issue and the lack of environmental concern on the part of the presidential candidates is a matter that needs to be brought to their attention! It is without a doubt, that much more can be done! With constant pressure and networking we can demonstrate to our leaders that in so much as we pressure multi-national corporations to be environmentally sound, political leaders also need to take a stand and recognize their carbon footprint impact on the environment, especially as seen through the negative impact of their campaigns!
