Membership fees
It's sad that the membership fee structure did not take into account students and those on a limited income. I'm an older woman who is working and putting myself through college. My household doesn't have an extra $250, much less an extra $425. I live in Austin and would really have liked to attend, but your fees were way, way out of my budget. I would have gladly put in volunteer time in return for a lower fee - a "work-study" fee, if you like. But I saw no options for this being offered. It's really too bad that only the well-off can attend.

Inappropriate? You know, I sympathize because yes for many people this is a large amount (from Austin myself, I could afford to go and did), but this is really a LOW amount considering the overhead involved in renting the convention center and costs. So, I felt it was a true bargain -- even if perhaps a bargain you could not afford.
So -- I'm sorry you could not go, but feel the price was extremely reasonable given the quality and length of the event and the many features (although I agree that if it was feasible to offer a work-study option for locals, that would have been nice for someone in your situation).
I’m fine

Inappropriate? We did have a scholarship program, I'm sorry that we were not able to get word of it out further.
We are working on a more inclusive price structure for next year. -
You don't have a more inclusive price structure for NN09. The registration is actually a bit higher (inflation, I know), and if there were scholarships for next year's convention, I didn't reading about them on DK.com, where I would expect to hear about them. I'm on a limited income, too, and the full registration price has kept me away from NN. -
Inappropriate?I think the cost of NN is prohibitive in a lot of ways. NCMR is only $95 for a blogger to attend and it includes more with more 'celebs' and attendance is much larger (3,500). Freepress was a sponsor of NN this year
Ask them how they do it
I noticed this upcoming year the price at the low end of $175 was only for 100 attendees and that got filled and now it is at the next level. If 2000 people are attending at an average of $300, that is $600,000 right there plus several hundreds of thousands I imagine in what sponsors are picking up. I would like to see the focus on more sponsors and lower price for attendees too, which is part of why we are considering sponsoring.
The DFA program of scholarships was a wonderful thing and I met several of the winners. Very diverse group in every sense and one of then most positive things of the conference.
